⠀ [ january 10, 2022 ] ✦ @Maisie Florakis To the person that gets/finds this,
First things first.
I'm very, very sorry if the owl dropped the letter on your head and not next to you. It's been staring at me for the past ten minutes as I try to write this, and to be honest, I feel like it's plotting something evil. Who knew owls could look so judgmental? Not me, that's for sure! I'm kind of worried. The owls I've used previously to send letters to my family have never looked at me like they wanted to attack—it's really unsettling. To be fair, I have been standing here thinking for a while, but still. Apparently this owl is both judgmental and impatient. What a personality.
ANYway.
Because this is sort of a random letter, I'll explain! I read this book once when I was younger, and in it, two of the characters wrote anonymous letters to each other. That was like the smallest, most unimportant part of the plot, if I'm being honest... but it stuck with me. And, since we're at Hogwarts, and there are literal OWLS that we can use whenever, I thought I might try it!
It's possible no one will ever get this and I'm just writing to the air right now, but it's fun to think someone will. I don't have much else, so I'll stop here for now?
And as for my anonymous name...
From,
hope this works! tell me if there's anything i should change! ✦ [ ooc note ]⠀

Dear fellow student,
Thank you so much for sending this letter! I was definitely not expecting it, and so the letter’s arrival was a pleasant surprise. Because the letter was so unexpected, I thought that the owl had made a mistake and accidentally delivered me a letter meant for my brother. Speaking of the owl, he did drop the letter right on my head while I was eating breakfast! Thankfully, the house elves in the kitchen prepared toast and jam instead of something wet like porridge, otherwise your letter would have gotten very dirty. Honestly, some of the owls at the owlery are so…odd and unique. Additionally, a lot of them are VERY loud. Their screeching and aggressive wing flapping tends to distracts me while I’m trying to focus on the letter I’m writing. Because of this, I’m heavily considering purchasing an owl of my own considering I don’t currently have any other pets. Do you have a pet? If so, what’s it’s name?
Another reason I’m so thankful you reached out (and this owl chose to deliver your message to me) is because writing this letter gives me something to do instead of my dreaded potions assignment. Don’t get me wrong, Professor Wickham-Dean is a great professor and her class is interesting, however potions in general is such a messy subject. I always get so nervous that I will accidentally knock over a vial or two and cause such a mess! Because of this, I think potions would be my least favorite subject. Personally, I’m also not looking forward to Care of Magical Creatures either. This is mainly because the school grounds get ridiculously muddy! Out of all the classes you’re taking, what do you enjoy the most and least?
I also do love this idea of anonymous owl pals; it’s definitely a very different experience for me and I’m looking forward to getting to know you more. Maybe we’ll run into each other sometime in person, who knows!
It was nice hearing from you and I anxiously wait your reply!

I'm so happy you got the letter and decided to write back! (God, I knew that owl wouldn't do any good! But yes, I'm very glad it didn't drop it into a bowl of porridge or something, that really would have been a disaster!) I'm sorry it's taken me a few days to get this done and sent to you, my week got a little busy and I couldn't find time. My letters shouldn't ever take more than a couple days though, if at all, starting from now on!
I don't have a pet, not YET, anyway. I really, really want to get one—it's just a matter of convincing my parents. Which is a little odd to me still cause they're not even with me for the most of the year... oh well. If I do manage to convince them, I'm stuck on what I should get. I love cats, so they're an obvious option, but when I was shopping for school supplies back last summer, I saw that the pet shop also has rabbits and those little puff animals. (I think those were called pygmy puffs?) So I'm not entirely decided yet. Or at all decided, really.
Oh of course, the absolute BEST time to write these letters to each other is the middle of an assignment! In fact, I'm putting off an essay I have to do for History of Magic right now to write this instead. For me, I think Potions class and Herbology might be my favorites. My potions partner makes class plenty of fun, firstly, but I also like the fact that we get to create something entirely new and interesting out of ingredients that most of the time don't look at all like the finished potion itself! I grew up in a muggle family, and whenever we bake or cook things, it's easy to see what each ingredient does and how it fits into the overall result. And while there MUST be people out there who know and can see the same for the potions we make in class, I definitely can't yet, so it's all very exciting to me. As for Herbology, I love being outside and anything that has to do with the outdoors, so working in a greenhouse with different plants and creatures is just my type of class.
For the classes I enjoy the least... probably Transfiguration? I don't really know, it's still just a little strange to me that we have the power to turn things like an animal into a teacup. When it's transfigured, does it know that it's not itself anymore? Or is it fully inanimate and not alive anymore?
How was winter break for you? I'm still getting used to being back, to be honest. After being here for so long, it was weird to visit my home again and do all the things I used to consider normal, but now that I'm back, it's the exact opposite.
From,
it's going to be interesting exploring their different personalities!✦ [ ooc note ]

Rae~
Absolutely no worries about the delay, I get busy as well between school and studying and so I completely understand. My responses to your letters should take around a couple of days, if not less, as well! If it does take more than that, feel free to send a reminder. I often get so caught up in work I may sometimes forget. I don’t think this will happen too often though, as I always look forward to your letters.
The pet shop does have so many different options, it’s quite overwhelming honestly. A couple years ago, during my brother’s first year (he’s a third year currently), we went to the pet store to purchase him an owl. I did also see the pgymy puffs (you were right!) and I thought they were adorable as well. I feel like they might get quite messy with all the fur though; it seems pretty high maintenance to keep that colorful mane clean! I’m thinking about buying my first pet this summer… I’m leaning towards a ferret!
I, myself, don’t cook too much however my mother keeps trying to convince me to learn. I grew up in a wizarding family, and so we do share a lot of kitchen tools and appliances as you muggles. From what I understand, the primary difference would be that we use magic to control and help create and mix instead of doing it by hand. I never really thought to compare cooking and potions, but the more that I think about it the more I see the similarities you’re seeing!
Herbology is a subject I also find super fascinating, however I prefer studying it from the side versus in the actual class. Even though we’re wearing gloves and proper protection to keep us safe and clean, I can’t help but feel so dirty and covered in grime when I leave the greenhouses! Otherwise, herbology is super interesting and I love reading about it in my free time. My favorite class would be Astronomy. I really enjoy learning about the stars and the world outside the one we know. I really like how this is a subject both muggles and wizards don’t fully know all about, and that it’s one that is constantly evolving as we make new discoveries and continue to learn.
As for transfiguration, it’s so hard! I think it’s definitely unique than all my other classes, however I find that it’s the class I dedicate the most time to when doing schoolwork due to the complex spells and motions, and how easily things can go wrong. I think it’s one of the more interesting subjects, but maybe that’s just me. I’m going to take a guess that when you transform something alive into something intimate, it fully becomes that intimate object? Honestly, I’m not too sure but I’ll look into it for you!
Finally, my winter break was lovely. Although I didn’t necessarily go on vacation, it was so nice to go back home and see my parents and little brother. I hope you’ve finally adjusted to being back at Hogwarts, though! It definitely took me a few days. How was your break otherwise? Did you do anything fun?
p.s. I know you come from a muggle family, but do you by any chance, have a favorite quidditch team?
ooc. yesssslooking forward to when they can meet in person as well

⠀ [ january 17, 2022 ] ✦ @Maisie Florakis M,
I look forward to your letters as well! I'm happy that the owl (however rude it may be) found someone who'd be interested in doing this with me. <3
To be honest, I hadn't even thought about how hard a pygmy puff must be to keep clean! They definitely have tons of fur, and I suppose keeping it all neat and untangled and everything would take lots of work. Especially cause I remember hearing that they love to be played with and would probably get dirty fast. I've been trying to convince my family—my parents, really, my aunt would love for me to get a pet—for what feels like FOREVER. Not entirely sure if they'll ever agree... but a ferret sounds so fun!! I don't know much about them though, I'd love to hear what made you choose it!
I grew up playing outside with my little brother all the time, so I guess that's most likely why I don't mind being covered in dirt or mud as much! Being outside also just reminds me of home, since my aunt would take me and my brother out all the time when the rest of my family didn't feel like it, so I'm often around on the grounds and courtyard.
I love the stars. My room in my house back home was on the very top floor and had a window in one corner where I could look out at the sky, usually at nighttime when I was falling asleep. They're so beautiful, and it's amazing to think about how much is out there that no one knows yet. For some people it might be scary, but I find it magical. In a different way than our magic here, of course.
I'm happy to hear your winter break went well!! Mine was really fun, and although things with Paisley were weird we were able to do a lot of fun things as a whole family. We didn't go anywhere either, but being home after staying away for a while is almost just as good, if not better, isn't it? And you have a little brother as well? I've got two siblings, an older sister and my younger brother. I'm the middle child, you've probably figured out by now.
Don't have a favorite quidditch team yet, but I think the sport looks really fun! In lots of muggle stories, witches rode around on broomsticks, actually. It was funny realizing that some authors must have gotten things right once after all, although the ones I read never mentioned any sport being played while on them. Do you play for a school team?
From,
Raeso sorry for the later reply!! thank you for being patient✦ [ ooc note ]

Rae~
Apologies for my slightly late reply. I haven’t really had time to stop by the Owlery because every time I go there seems to be such a long line! I’m seriously considering holding off on the ferret, and instead being a little basic and going with the owl. That way I wont have to deal with a long wait every time I write! That being said, there are a couple things I really like about ferrets that I feel like no other pet available at Magical Menagerie can offer. They perform little dances when excited, and I think that it’s adorable! They’re also generally quite playful and hyper, and I feel like I could just sit with one for hours and not get bored. That’s just me though. I’m not too sure what color I would get if I were to get one; when I with my brother to pick his owl I did see this slightly reddish brown and white one that seemed to stare at me…maybe in the summer if he’s still there I’ll pick him up! I don’t think my parents would mind too much- as I mentioned before my brother has an owl and I think that I’m way more responsible than he is. Hopefully, we’ll see soon!
I can definitely see why you enjoy spending time outside so much. Even when I was younger, I preferred to stay inside instead of playing with my brothers in the yard. The one exception would be family games of Quidditch, but even then I only join those occasionally. I don’t play for the school team, however it definitely seems fun! Do you play any sports? If so, which ones? I’ve never played any muggle sports, however games like Ice Hockey and Golf sound so interesting!
I’m also the middle child, so I can definitely relate. I mentioned my older brother before, he’s a third year going into his fourth. He’s a real pain, and gets away with almost everything! I also have a younger brother who’s currently seven, so when he gets to Hogwarts I’ll be a fifth year. How old are your siblings?

⠀[ january 21, 2022 ] ✦ @Maisie Florakis M,
Don't worry about reply time, there'll definitely be times where other parts of life and school get in the way of replying and I get that. :) Honestly yes, getting an owl would be tons of help but after everything you mentioned about ferrets... They sound like a wonderful pet. I had no idea about the whole dancing-when-happy thing you mentioned, that's really really cute. Really though, who wouldn't want a pet that could dance? I've heard a few other people talking about their pets since I got here back in September (just in passing, haven't met too many people officially that have pets or at all) and a lot of them mentioned things about how they knew exactly which pet they wanted right away. Something about the way it looked at them, and all that—it sounds like the one you remember could definitely be the one, according to lots of the people here.
For me, I think I was pretty focused on the pygmy puffs when we first visited, so I don't really remember any other specific animals there... I'll just have to figure it out if/when I convince my parents to let me get one, I suppose. I sent an owl to my aunt a few days ago to see what she thinks about me getting a pet but haven't heard back yet... we'll see I guess, I'll update you whenever she replies!
My older sister, Paisley, sounds a little bit like you actually! She's always been the indoor child in our family—she'd much rather stay inside and read or write instead of coming outside with Milo and I. As for sports, I don't really play any seriously or on a team or anything like that, but I've always enjoyed football or soccer. I took ballet lessons when I was really young, but I stopped after a year or two and haven't thought all that much about it since. I do remember enjoying it though... maybe someday I'll dance again? Ice hockey is a whole lot of fun to watch, but I don't get to watch often. And golf I've never seen or played at all.
I haven't thought about joining any of the school sports teams yet, it's been a very busy since the start of the school year getting used to everything and learning new things and all of that, but if I had to choose a sport, quidditch or broom racing would be my picks. Dueling sounds interesting, but I'm not as good with spells, and honestly? I'd be a little nervous about having another person casting them on me and such. I know that broom racing you also have to go through obstacles and stuff, so maybe quidditch, then. But definitely not till a later year—there's still so much to figure out with normal school, adding on a sport would be overwhelming for sure.
My sister is 3 years older than me (14) and my brother is a year and a half younger than me (he's 10 right now). My brother's the one that gets away with things between the three of us, but that's probably because my sister would rather stay out of trouble.
So sorry this letter got this long, I hope you don't mind too much reading it! Somehow it's so much easier to talk about everything when it's over a letter and also anonymous...
Raelove the new new profile image as well!! :P ✦ [ ooc note ] ⠀
