| === | The first half of the train ride, Reena grinned. She was excited to go home! She was so excited to see her home, her friends, to smell her mom's homemade meals once more- and most of all to see her mom and... her dad. Her dad. Her heart dropped as realization hit her. She wouldn't be seeing her dad. Maybe for a little bit, but if she knew anything, it was that her mom won the argument and Reena would be staying with her. Not that she was upset about staying with her mom, she just wished her parents hadn't gotten divorced without saying anything until it was over. And then sending an owl about. It was better if she found out in person. Her smile faltered and she put on a fake one. The student sitting across her had asked if she was alright, which Reena didn't process until they repeated themselves. "I- uh? Oh! Yeah! Of course!!! I just dozed off for second. Chocolate frog?" She quickly changed the subject and tried to mask her annoyance with fake joy. She was still going home~ she was going to have fun! Right? They pulled into the station and Reena's cat followed her at her heals as she pulled her bag from above. She had helped the other student put their bag up there, but she ignored them as they asked for help getting it down. She wasn't in the mood to be helpful at all. Not anymore. She simply pretended not to hear them and muttered goodbye and 'have a good summer'. Just as she suspected, her mother and father were both waiting. But there was definitely something different this time. THIS time, they weren't holding hands or arm in arm. They were about a foot and a half apart, stiff smiles and arms crossed across their chest. However, their smiles blossomed into real ones at the sight of their daughter, but she did not smile back. She gave them an angry yet neutral look. "Hi." She said. How could they do this to her? Was she expected to just- just live without her dad?! That's when she noticed the third man. Her father kneeled down to speak. "Listen, we haven't figured out the whole parent swap thing yet so just for the su-" Reena looked away from him and glared at the third man."Who are you?" She had a tone as if she were accusing someone. Everyone. Because there was no way this was who she thought he was. He had to be just some random man. Her mother cleared her throat awkwardly and walked forward. She put on a calm voice. "This is Paul. He and I-" Reena looked at her mom in disgust. "No! You're not dating. You JUST split up with dad that's gross!" She recoiled from her mom's hand. She turned to her dad. "And- and- you're just okay with this?" Her dad didn't speak. Her mother and Paul shared a look. Reena scoffed and grabbed her bags. "I want to go home." | === |
