Solo thread for Simon's failed attempt at officially meeting his father for the first time.

Simon glanced up to the darkened sky, as London had slipped from civil twilight when the streetlights had begun to turn on to nautical twilight, where the distant line between sea and sky would no longer be distinguishable - that is, if there were a sea to see in London. By this time of the night, one would need artificial lights to carry on outdoor activities - that or the wide dilated pupils of dhampir eyes.

Simon was currently making his way to Duck & Waffle, the highest restaurant in the UK which was located on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower/110 Bishopsgate in the City of London. It welcomed guests 24 hours a day/7 days a week in hopes of keeping pace with a city that's always on the move. For Simon, it offered him a public meeting place where perhaps his father would feel more comfortable.

His reservation was for 11:30PM and he arrived at the building in his smart casual attire to follow the dress code. A spiral staircase would lead up higher than anyone would walk and luckily the restaurant could be accessed by a scenic lift from a dedicated entrance. Simon entered into the glass enclosure and pressed the button for Floor 40. There was a WOOSH!

Whether it was his nerves, his anticipation, or the fast moving lift, he was skyrocketed up at a rather high speed that would make anyone's heart beat faster. His ears popped and he looked out to the dark streets of London below, getting smaller and smaller. The view was quite amazing, as he could see all of London from the Olympic village to Wembley stadium. In less than 45 seconds, he was on the 40th Floor.

Some low, ambient sort of soft jazz was playing and grew as he approached the main lobby and reception area. "Good evening. 11:30 Reservation for McKay," he told the man, using the pseudonym that he had asked his father to use for himself when directing letters to Simon. The reason? Well, it was complicated. Let's just say he wasn't quite ready to inform his Aunt Maggie on his intentions to meet with the man.

She would have held apprehension, as this was a man who she barely knew, a man who her sister had known briefly but felt the need to cut off all communication with, and a man, who wasn't a normal man at all but rather a vampire - thus the 11:30PM meeting.

After checking a list, the man gave Simon a once-over, perhaps assessing age although there wasn't a requirement for this restaurant (except in a certain private bar area) or maybe he was curious as to why he appeared to be alone at this hour, or perhaps merely assessing his clothing choice. Whatever it was, he granted his entrance with a small smile of customer service.

Simon followed the man, entering into the strange but wonderful mix of urban and elegant - where graffiti decorated the walls lit by chandeliers. The ambience was dark, allowing for the lights of nighttime London to make their own sort of picture wall display out the windows. Simon wondered if Adrian Hawthorne would already be seated at one of the tables next to the window of such a view. That flittering feeling came back to him and surely this time it wasn't the lift.

There were several tables occupied despite it the late hour but that didn't surprise Simon being in the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, with friends meeting up, business meetings being conducted, and relationships kindled no matter the hour. To his dismay, he was seated at one of those tables along the windows where the chair across from him sat unoccupied.

"Good evening! Welcome to Duck & Waffle!" a young waitress asked, also perhaps assessing over what she thought his age to be as she glanced over his shoulder, wondering if someone else was with him. It wasn't that Simon looked young and in fact he possibly could pass for a sixteen year old which was three years his senior but even most sixteen year olds didn't travel the streets of London at night and go to fancy restaurants alone. She placed down two menus before him, one being the Late Night menu and the other being the All Day menu. "Would you like to order or shall we wait for your guest to arrive?"

Simon said he'd wait. And wait he did.

She passed by at the six minute mark. She brought refills for the table to the left of him at the ten minute mark. She went to approach at the fifteen minute mark but hesitated and that's when he requested a glass of water.

At the twenty five minute mark, she approached again. Simon decided he better order something because this was a restaurant after all. He quickly placed the Late Night menu in front of him. What was a normal thing for someone normal to eat? On that menu he found bacon wrapped dates with linguiça, Manchego, mustard. Come again? There were other things listed that might have well been in a foreign language to him: creme fraiche, Chantilly cream, spiced butter.

"Uh, yea - I'll go ahead and order," he said, and quickly flipped to the All Day menu. There were those pesky bacon wrapped dates again located in the same category now as corn ribs and cauliflower and red onion pakora. There was grilled octopus and roasted beets..... Where was the steak? Then he quickly saw the word beef and felt a little relief. "I'll go with the rib of beef," he said to the woman who tilted her head a little questioningly and then wrote it down. "Got it, Adorable," she said as she flashed him a smile and a wink and then headed off.

Simon didn't realize he had purchased the second most expensive thing on their menu (and only two pounds less than the most expensive) as he was too distracted by the fact that it was nearly a half hour in, nearing midnight now, and Adrian Hawthorne had yet to arrive.

His meal came. It sat. He picked at it - mostly just moving it around the plate. The waitress asked if everything was okay with the meal and he thanked her, stating it was. He waited some more. Simon glanced at his phone when it was 12:51. He knew it would be late by now and he had sat for such an agonizingly long time as the couples left hand in hand for the night, the business partners departed, and the friends said their goodbyes.

It was now time for him to make his departure from the restaurant that night, having accomplished absolutely nothing but lighter pockets from the price of the meal. Disappointed, he headed back and glanced up at the darkened sky, hoping that the reason for Adrian Hawthorne's absence was due to something unavoidable or otherwise he would have come. His pupils once again would have the wide dilated pupils of dhampir only this time they would also would be tinged red with the tears of blood of a dhampir in distress

Solo thread for Simon's second failed attempt at officially meeting his father.

How long, baby how long,
Has that evening train been gone?
How long, how how long, baby how long?

Went to the station, didn't see no train.
Down in my heart, I have an aching pain.
How long, how how long, baby how long?

It was an old American Blues song by Leroy Carr called 'How Long Blues' but it encaptured a little bit of what Simon had experienced that night. He had arrived at the same station as before, the same restaurant, at the same time: 11:30 PM. He had waited the same duration of time and was met - not with his father - but disappointment once again.

Originally he had thought there could be hundreds of reasons why one didn't show and that's what had to have happened the first time Adrian Hawthorne didn't show up for their meeting.

Maybe he got lost. He was quite sure that vampires probably weren't big on asking for directions.

Maybe something came up. Did vampires have business meetings to attend?

Maybe he was ill. Do vampires get sick?

Maybe he wasn't ready.

No matter the reason, Simon found himself showing up at the second date which he had provided in his letter and held high hope that his father would join him.

And now with two failed attempts occurring, his hope of an appearance at the third and final meeting was looking rather scare. How long would he have to wait? He left Heron Tower and with the London Underground only operating past midnight in some stations on Fridays and Saturdays, he took to his walk, knowing he could call to a ride service if needed. He needed the walk, it would hopefully help him collect his thoughts.

His thoughts were rather hazy to him right now as he wasn't quite sure the emotion he felt. He did know that this was taxing on him emotionally and he didn't like how it weighed him down. If only he had a little more clarity on the subject. And that's when, while waiting at a street light corner, Simon saw it. There was a flashing neon sign that alerted his attention to a small shop located just next to The Astrology Shop. It was called Moonbeam Psychics and upon walking closer he discovered that it claimed to be open 24 hours. He didn't want a psychic reading here, as AngelFyre's warning about his father had been enough, but he was curious to see what was inside, and as it was the only store open in that late/early hour, he entered to find out.

Inside were all sorts of new age and metaphysical supplies. He figured it was probably similar to what they sold next door but on a smaller scale. He browsed along the shelves of almanacs, reference books, birth-chart calculations, calendars, magazines, personal horoscopes, tumble stones, gemstones, geodes, and gemstones. Boxes, jewlery, sandtimers, and healing crystals.

As he came to something called a seer-stone and reached out for it, a woman appeared and startled him when she spoke, as he hadn't seen her come into the room. "Good early-morning to you, my child. It was Confucius who said: "In order to reach spiritual perfection, you must first of all take care of the purity of your soul. This can be attained when heart looks for truth, and strives for wholeness, and depends on true knowledge." My name is Sandra. Would you like guidance?"

Simon normally didn't believe in this sort of thing but now he had knowledge of this entire other world that he never knew previously existed. He looked to Sandra and wondered - was she a muggle of the wizarding world herself, teetering on this fine line of the non magic world and the magical one without giving too much away? Was she perhaps someone who thought they were a muggle and had a bit of magic in them to grasp a touch of the experience, or was she just someone who hoped that she had?

To his right, there were some quotes painted up on wooden plaques set next to decks of cards. One said "Tarot is an instrument that reveals the hidden things of the world and makes sense out of the visible ones." and the other said "Divination is the quest to understand more about the past, present, and future. In other words, Tarot readings are an attempt to understand ourselves better and discover how we might live better in the future." Simon remembered his friend Olivia Dalton's older sister showing them tarot cards once a couple years ago.

It sounded like an interesting topic to explore on those late nights where he couldn't sleep. Maybe it would help him somehow understand AngelFyre's gift a little more somehow. Maybe it would give him a jump start on Divination class that would begin this coming school year. Perhaps it wouldn't lead him to understanding everything in the universe but it could offer him some insight to his own thoughts and could provide guidance to spiritual clarity when things got hazy like now. Perhaps it could help him understand what to do with a train that just wouldn't find its way to the station.

He scanned the available decks and picked one out, along with one of the nearby reference books. "I'll take these," he said, and Sandra helped him with his purchase.

Solo thread for Simon's test of the tarot cards.
Image posted by the member

After practicing with the cards between friend meet-ups, spending time with Aunt Maggie, quick hockey games, impromptu football games, swim sessions at the nearby indoor pool, choir singing, and church sessions, Simon had decided to try and attempt his first actual 'official' tarot reading.

He would conduct a True Love Spread which was to give him an idea about The One. It was risky, and perhaps not his best of starting points because things with he and AngelFyre McCubbin were going incredibly well but what if the cards said otherwise?

With Aunt Maggie at work, he had total control of the townhome. He went to the Reading Room and burned some palo santo and some sage to clear out any negative energy or stress and lit some candles before sitting down and spreading the deck out before him in a fan-like fashion. He then chose two cards for the top, three for the middle, and one at the bottom.

The first card he would turn over was the one that represented him, his current feelings, and his attitudes and expectations in the relationship. It was The World card and could signify that he was in a happy, secure, loving, and committed place in his relationship. Simon smiled. So far his first reading was aligning quite well with his reality.

The next card represented his partner and their current feelings, attitudes, and expectations. Simon flipped that card over to reveal the King of Cups. This was a card he wanted to see pop up in many of his readings and was of particular interest to him because it was 'the good father' card. In this case, it would be the good partner card and pledged emotional fulfilment. Simon opened up his book next to him and flipped through until he found more information on the card. It apparently also meant that romance and affection should be abundant in the relationship and it was one of the best cards you could get representing a partner. It meant they were romantic, charming, devoted, and loyal. They were easy going, a caring partner. They were emotionally mature and generous with their time or advice. It was definitely a card to represent AngelFyre.

Simon moved to the next row. The third card would be the connection card. Simon turned over to reveal the Six of Wands which indicated success, stability, strength, and sharing your success. With all positive outcomes, he moved quickly to the fourth card which would be the card to reveal the strengths in the relationship and the qualities that maintain it.

With each card, Simon went back to consult the book. He had a general idea of what these cards meant but it helped him review the information in his head to see if he had it correct. The next card was the Page of Wands which demoted cheerfulness, free-thinking, and passion. It hinted at a playfulness in the relationship, and the ability to seek adventure together.

Simon hesitated a moment for the fifth card, the one that was the relationship weakness card. This would be the issues that needed to be explored and addressed. He sat a moment, taking steady breaths, until he felt he was back at a calm before turning that one over. The King of Pentacles. Whereas Simon was expecting something negative here, it seemed that the King of Pentacles indicated that they were in a secure, comfortable, and stable relationship. He would read on that it could represent a man who will be patient, dependable, stable and nurturing. The man is loyal and faithful and would take great care of his partner and children and work hard to provide them with a good standard of life. He cares deeply about his partner but may sometimes struggle with expressing his emotions. That was so very true, as it was AngelFyre who was the poet with words. Maybe that was the weakness, that he just needed to be more open - to ensure that AngelFyre felt secure and cared for.

The last card was the True Love card in the spread. It would identify if the relationship can be successful. One more card to turn over and it was the the Queen of Wands. This indicated that he was in a relationship with someone who was fiery but life would never be boring. It meant there was optimism within the relationship and that things were going very well and they both should be feeling very confident, loved, and excited. It could also represent motherhood and fertility, and Simon couldn't help but think of the future 'at least twelve' children that he wanted.

Simon sat there, staring at these six cards in front of him and was rather astounded at how positive the cards seemed to align with his relationship that truly was amazing. If there was something in the universe that he connected with to help him choose such cards as to accurately portray this, maybe the cards could do it again with some clarity concerning his father.

Solo thread for decisions made.

How many chances should one receive? One? Three strikes and you're out? Infinite?

With his last and final date approaching in which he might possibly meet his father, Simon was quite unsure whether he should even show up himself. Adrian Hawthorne had yet to make an appearance the first two times and he was diappointed that was two chances that the two could have talked, bonded, learned more about one another.

To decide whether or not he should go and what exactly his feelings were on the subject, Simon consulted his deck of Tarot cards once again. This time he would conduct The 5-Card Horsehoe Spread which intended to give the reader a quick answer to a very basic problem or concern. Just as before, he prepped the room and relaxed until he felt he was in the right headspace and shuffled through the deck until it felt right, fanned the cards out before him, and began.

The first card turned over was to focus on the current situation. Simon turned the card over to reveal the Two of Pentacles which indicated that he was trying to find or maintain balance between various areas of his life. It represented the ups and downs in life and implied that one was resourceful, adaptable, and flexible enough to get through them. As Simon read this part in his book, the word 'dedicated' also popped into his mind and it was right then and there, at the first card, that Simon found his answer on whether or not he would try once more to meet his father. He would try this next time and if stood up, he would try again. He would show up the 100th time if stood up 99 prior.

Still, with his answer found, he continued because a good reader didn't break concentration and completed full readings. The next card represented what is before you and he turned over the Seven of Wands, which represented fighting your corner and holding your own. It signified taking the high road and maintaining control - being strong willed. In his mind, that echoed 'determination.'

The next card would be the heart of the matter. For Simon, this card was the Seven of Pentacles and it indicated that he had been working very hard and it soon would start to pay off. It was a very welcomed card since he had been persevering with a situation and felt like he had been getting no where because it suggested that success was just around the corner. Maybe the third time would be the charm!

The next card represented the short term future and he pulled up the Six of Swords in reversed. The reversed cards always led him to a little bit of concern since they often pointed to an imbalance in energy. He also wasn't quite as certain of their meanings in this state. He found his answer in his book and saw that this card signifies instability which causes trouble and stormy relationships. Simon thought back to a moment back at Hogwarts with AngelFyre McCubbin and what she had said about a possible premonition she had of his father.

I am petrified for you.

The overwhelming sensation I was aware of was one of danger... for you.

I knew then... with a rock solid belief of certainty... that you will not be safe with that father of yours, Simon.

Let it be. Leave him in the past. Your mother did, and God, Simon, she must have had her reasons. If you cannot trust me in this, and I will understand why that might be, please... please... trust that your mother had her reasons. She knew him. We do not. Believe in her judgement and believe, please, in my love for you.

Do not meet him. Stay as far away from Adrian Hawthorne as you can get. I beg you.

Simon took a few moments to just let that all sink in before pulling the book to his lap once more. This card suggested there may be unfinished business, unresolved conflict, or lessons you need to understand before one can move forward. And he did. He was a boy who never knew his father and a boy who didn't remember his mother. He needed to meet Adrian Hawthorne, even if it was with cautious judgement the entire time.

With not only his decision to show up at the restaurant the third time made as well as his mindset to be and remain vigilant, Simon turned over the last card in the spread which would depict the long-term future. There he was meet with the Knight of Cups and knights are action takers and this card was an indication to take action and follow his heart.

Adrian Hawthorne, in his letters, had been correct that this meeting was predestined. A child should know their father.

Solo thread for Simon as he finally meets his father.

His tarot card reading told him to come.
His intuition told him to come.
His conscious told him to run.

With the first two winning out, Simon made his way back to 110 Bishopesgate and to the 40th Floor. He was early as always and as he approached the entrance, the young man that sat him both two previous times. "Ah! McKay, party of 2," the man said, welcoming him, "do follow me." McKay was the surname of a professor who was the director of The London College of Music. It was the pseudonym that was used in written correspondences with Adrian Hawthorne so that his Aunt Maggie would forward the letters to him without being suspicious. It was rather deceitful and he wasn't proud of it but as he had told AngelFyre before school let up, this was something that he felt he had to do. He would be careful. He promised her that much.

The man led him over to the same table by the same window, overlooking the same darkened view of London at night. What was different this time, is that an outline of a man stood, his gaze fixated out the window to the city buildings and streets below. It was the hair and the strong jawline that gave light to the fact that this was the man he saw on his doorstep a summer ago, the man that he had been exchanging letters with, and, most importantly, the man that was half of who he was.

Simon stood awestruck for a moment and the maitre d' returned back to the reservation desk, leaving the two alone.

Silence.

Times before, there had been the murmur of low talking that filled that restaurant or the clinking of silverware being placed down upon the table or gently tapping against the plate.

Absolute silence.

It was then that Simon Kincaid discovered that silence could be so ......loud. He was imprisoned with his thoughts who seemed to be racing so quickly that he couldn't sort them out. The thoughts were screaming at him like ten thousand phrases all trying to be heard at once and yet he couldn't grasp a single one of them to make a statement. His heart raced and he felt sick to his stomach.

"You came," Simon finally managed.

He watched as the man continued to stare out the window, showing no sign of acknowledging his presence or his words. Had he noticed his arrival? Had he heard him speak? Simon took a step closer to the window to be in the man's vision and hopefully force him into some sort of response.

The man finally diverted his gaze and glanced over to him. "Clearly," was the response given. Adrian Hawthorne's eyes fixated on him and directly connected with his and Simon felt his own self-confidence shattering within his presence. There, that agonizing silence came to met the two of them once more.

The man's gaze was assertive, dominating, and yet Simon wouldn't avert his. Was this man trying to read him? Challenge him? Whatever it was, Simon conveyed back confidence even if he didn't quite feel transpired it as genuinely as he would have liked inside. Adrian Hawthorne's 'clearly' remark was said with no readable emotion and yet the singular word itself implied thick sarcasm.

The man finally extended out one hand toward the table, gesturing for him to be seated. The man then pulled out a chair and slowly sat down. Before another word could be said (which might have taken some time to happen if t were to happen), the waitress came over and placed a menu before each of them.

Simon was a little intrigued as the man across from him looked over the menu because what would a vampire order at a restaurant? He took this opportunity, as the man's eyes were lowered to the menu, to study him. From the low lighting of the restaurant, Simon wasn't quite sure of eye color but when he had been studying him earlier by the window, concluded they were either a shade of blue or green and not brown like his own. Now, with closer look, maybe dapper was a way to describe him, with a right sort of classic tailored dark suit over a slim but strong build. He was pale, but it didn't strike him as alarmingly pale, and everything seemed just in place on the man except for his floppy brown hair.

"A bottle of the 2009 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello."
The waitress paused as she looked to him before writing that down and heading back. Simon scanned over the menu, finding that particular wine and felt he might have understood the hesitation. It was the most expensive wine on their menu, by far.

Now with the waitress gone and it just the two of them once more, silence threatened to become their best friend once more. What did one talk about with a vampire? The weather??? Probably not sports! International news? Movies? Music? Read any good books lately?

None seemed right.

And yet, where would he even start with the conversation? How did he address this man before him? It would be so much easier to continue the pseudonym and call him Professor McKay but he knew that would be awkward.

Did the man across from him know he was so cold and collected? Without even doing anything at all he made Simon feel weak and inferior. He seemed to be a man who held absolute control and yet he kept this meeting at a current standstill. No. Simon didn't ask to meet him just to physically be within the same space as him - they needed to talk; and if this man wasn't going to start the conversation than Simon, the ever-social one, would.

"Sir, I'm Simon Ezra Kincaid." In his letters he had written S.E. Kincaid because for some reason he had been hesitant to use his full name. "My mother was Arabella Elise Kincaid. I was born in London on February 14th, 2009. My mother had ceased relations with my father before learning she was expecting and it is my understanding that he, more precisely in this case, you, never knew." Once again he felt sick to his stomach but he wouldn't let that win. He would keep his own confidence even if inwardly it was wavering. He wouldn't let it show. He didn't come this far to sit with silence.

"She entered into the presence of the Lord when I was three years old. Your arrival on my doorstep last Summer was my only way of finding your existence, your identity." The man stared forward at him with that unreadable expression with each word. "And that identity is quite unique, from my understanding, but not exactly one that needs to be brought up in public spaces."

"Indeed," the man agreed. The waitress came, placing the wine down and asking if they'd like to order anything else but Simon politely rejected. Once she left, Adrian Hawthorne opened the wine and filled his glass mostly full and then poured some into the wineglass closest to Simon, filling it to the same amount which surprised him a little. Simon anticipated he would fill it half full at most. He then watched as the man took a small sort of decorative pendant from his pocket that resembled a vial and he gave it two strong shakes before opening it and pouring its contents into the glass. Upon placing the now-empty vial back into his pocket, he lifted the glass and swirled it around the way knowledgeable wine connoisseur would do and then took a drink.

Silence loomed before them, closing in closer and closer. Simon took his glass, no added ingredients, and took a sip. It was surprising velvety. If the man across from him was incapable of general civilized conversation, then he would devote his attention elsewhere. It was his turn to dedicate his attention to staring at the night lights of London from the window.

"In 2019, lightning struck near the North Pole forty-eight times. Whilst lightning happens all the time, certain parts of the world get far less of it than others, including that region. Lightning requires atmospheric instability, something that's setup when cold parched air sits atop warmer, wetter air. At very high latitudes, that hotter, damper air tends not to show up. That is why it took scientists by surprise when dozens of lightning strikes were detected within 300 nautical miles of the North Pole. Sometimes the unexpected happens and it takes time for one to grasp the full picture, to understand the lightning strike."

When he first began to speak, Simon listened to his English accent and looked to him - listening - but the more he spoke, the more confused he grew. This wasn't quite the introduction he was assume it would be. As he finished though, Simon thought he might have grasped the concept that was trying to be conveyed. Simon Kincaid was the lightning, the unexpected phenomena, and Adrian Hawthorne was still trying to grasp the reality of it striking, or him coming to be.

Nothing else was said during their time at the table with the exception of a thank you from Simon when the waitress brought the final bill. Adrian paid in cash and left it at the table before standing and Simon realized that this must meet their time had come to an end.

Simon followed as Adrian led them out of the restaurant and to the elevator. Once inside, Simon knew that there would be 43 more seconds of silence as he had done this solitary trip the previous two meetups. At the bottom, the glass door opened and they exited, both stepping out different directions. Simon knew that this was where they would part ways for now.

"Written communication should be maintained," Adrian spoke. Simon was able to give a quick head tilt of a nod in agreement before the man turned and walked away.
