Tower of Terror PV Seren Yong & Evelynn Decipio Closed

Place: Astronomy Tower
Date: Wednesday, June 15, 2022
Time: In the afternoon after classes
Jack didn't personally know Seren Yong. He didn't have anything against her, either. Her name just happened to be visible to him on a particular day at a particular time when he was contemplating victims. He saw the name written on a parchment atop a professor's desk and remembered it when thinking of who to address with his fake letter. Thus, it was in this way that Seren Yong received a false summons from the Astronomy Professor, Professor Farron Horne, to appear at the top of the Astronomy Tower after classes had been dismissed for the day.

The third year didn't think about the consequences if he got caught. He couldn't afford to. So much more was at stake than punishment for posing as a professor. So much so that he couldn't help but involve others in his plans, including not only Seren, but Evelynn Decipio. He was counting on her for a great deal that day and he sincerely hoped she could deliver. A life was on the line.

Simple though the plan was, Jack knew there were a still a hundred ways it could go wrong. He peered though the gap in the crenellations of the tower, trying to catch sight of Evelynn wherever she was. She was supposed to be positioned in the air on her broom already, but where in the air had not been specified. Besides, she was also supposed to remain out of view so as not to let Seren see her before it was time. Giving up looking, the young man sighed and shifted his weight where he crouched in the shadows of the tower.

Jack himself did his best to stay out of sight in preparation for when Seren showed up at the top of the tower. The letter he had written insisted that Seren had to stand at the edge of the tower and look to the North in order to see what she was supposed to see, so he hoped she wouldn't think to glance behind her before following the instructions. In the case Seren did look around or glance behind her, however, she would see Jack appearing to work on some Astronomy homework, crouching behind a telescope and doing his best to look like he was minding his own business.

Seren was quietly climbing the stairs of the Astronomy Tower, her expression showing a combination of fear, confusion, and the desire to TRY to hide the emotions running through her. When she had received the letter from Professor Horne, her stomach had utterly dropped... She was thoroughly convinced she had failed an assignment or else had somehow broken a rule was in ever so much trouble. She had opened the envelope with trembling hands, tucked out of sight from anyone she knew, because the last thing she had wanted was to have anyone see her failure.

When she had pulled the parchment out, she had begun to read and then her expression had begun to change, becoming thoroughly confused. She was not in trouble, or at least she did not seem to be, but she had no idea as to why SHE was being summoned by the Professor for such a strange and oddly specific instructions... And rather scary instructions, too, after all. She had to stand at the edge, which made the poor girl want to shake and run in fear. However, her fear of getting in trouble was powerful enough that she was going to force herself to walk to the edge anyways.

She did wonder, though, why SHE had been singled out. She had managed to casually ask a few classmates if they had gotten any messages from any of their professors, and no one else had said they had. It was very strange indeed, and yet she had gotten her courage up and decided to go. If nothing else, she had to make sure that she did not get on her professor's bad side.

Finally, the slender young lady made it up and onto the top of the tower. She glanced around, trying to see if anyone she did NOT know had been summonsed as well. She spotted an unfamiliar older boy, but he was not over where she had been told to stand, and he seemed to be doing homework of some sort. She bit her lip, but decided not to say anything to him... She really did not want to interact with too many older boys, after the Ball. She began to walk towards the place she was supposed to be, though she slowed and almost stopped when she was close but... Not at the edge. Her skin was pale, as pale a white color as was possible for her to be, and she was trembling with fear. After a moment, she managed to push herself forwards, only truly stopping when she got to the edge. She quietly looked out, murmuring "Now what in Merlin's name am I supposed to be seeing here...?"

Leaves rustled overhead on the gentle breeze, the whistling through the trees evoking a soft harmony that spoke to a level of serenity in contrast to the surroundings. For it was anything but peaceful. Shrouded by the shadows of the canopies, a lion lay in wait. Grey eyes that may as well have appeared black for the lack of any penetrating light to illuminate them gazed out from her place of hiding.

It was strange, waiting there. Never mind for the rules she was narrowly skirting by loitering at the forest's edge; or the plans she'd had to rearrange when the day and time had been set and the plan put to motion. Falsely impersonating a professor... luring an unsuspecting student to the tower's peak without supervision... to prey upon their trust to set an ambush... to risk life and limb with a physical assault in order to deliberately induce fear... facilitating trauma... The number of rules, alone, that they were smashing to the ground were staggering. That that spoke to nothing of the morality. Or lack there-of.

It was wrong, what they were doing. She knew that.

And yet... Despite all this, all the thoughts that ruminated within her head, the voices that pleaded for her to heed her better judgment, Evelynn could not pull back. It wasn't even for the sake of the victim. Granted, that was certainly something that weighed heavily on her thoughts. In this moment, the prefect held the life of another in her hands. The board had been set, the pieces in place, her role assigned. This entire situation was an exercise in trust. Although more so for the perpetrator than herself. She could, in theory, abandon her post. She was meant to hide, to remain out of sight. But what difference was there, really, between that and absence when viewed from the tower? If she left, the other cogs of the machine would be none the wiser. He would act on the plan as though she were ready and waiting, keen to carry out her mission. The pawn would fall. And—if Evelynn failed to act—shatter on the ground.

Obviously she could not allow that to happen. That was why she was here, after all. If not her, it would have been someone else. He needed the ingredients and was clearly willing to stoop to questionable lengths to obtain it. Completion of the mission would not pivot upon her participation, she knew. Her acquiescence simply meant that she would be aware of the situations. More likely to be informed of other happenings. And she could rest easy with the knowledge that she would not fail. She wouldn't necessarily be able to trust the speed or skill of flight if trusted to another.

Plus... it needed to happen. Fear was a small price to pay compared to the life of another. At this point in time, they couldn't be certain exactly to what level Flash had been impacted by the assault that had marked him as an unwilling informant. There were few for whom Evelynn would risk her own health and reputation. He had lost such a position in the aftermath of the eye-opening revelation; but had regained it following the ball. He had always gone to great lengths to keep her informed previously. To treat her as a trusted ally. It was time for her to do the same. Real loyalty could not be purchased. It had to be earned.

Lips pursed as she blew out a slow exhalation, steadying her nerves and slowing her heart. In this moment, timing would be everything. Burst forth too soon, and suspicion might rise. The entire surprise might be spoiled. Act too late, however, and she would never recover. Nor would the girl. Fingers clasped tightly about the polished handle of the broom, and as soon as the girl appeared at the edge of the tower, she hunched herself forward, muscles coiled and ready to spring.

As Farron's classes didn't start until well in the afternoon she typically didn't show up to her classroom until after most of the other classes had gotten out. With the odd hours that she had to keep with her occupation it made it to where she could sleep in and get ample rest. Her schedule was normal by all means, just... shifted. As she arrived to class with a key in hand, Stinkbug on her shoulder, a pile of parchment tucked into the arm with the key, and a coffee clutched in her other she noticed the door was... unlocked.

She racked her brain for the last time she had locked up. Surely she had remembered to lock the door? Well. No matter. Most of the students were just letting up out of class anyway. Surely, no student would break in and break rules. She walked in humming a little diddy to herself before dropping everything off at the proper locations. Stinkbug where the office used to be, the files and coffee on her desk, the key tucked away into her desk drawer. Just out of a paranoia, she did a lap of the classroom. Trying to verify that all of the instruments were still calibrated, nothing was out of place, nothing was broken. It was when she made her way up to the observation deck that her brows furrowed in anger. "Oi! What in Merlin's name are you doing on the deck? In my classroom no less?" Her hands came to sit on her hips. "Mister Burnett and Miss Yong, I expect an explanation and I expect it now." Ah, the professor that never used last names, using last names. Now that was intimidating.

"And Miss Yong please, get back from the edge. I don't know what daredevil shenanigans are happening but it stops now." She herded Seren back, not wanting the girl to accidentally slip and fall. Now wouldn't that be disastrous. Not that she really could- there was a railing for safety. Even if she did fall it would catch her.
You both have been caught! Evelynn is safely tucked away. Detention will be served, unless they can talk their way out of it.

When Jack heard the first set of footsteps traveling up to the observation deck, he tensed, ready to spring into action. At first, he didn't think Seren was going to go to the edge since she didn't move there immediately but took her time. Eventually, however, she just barely made it and had spoken when a new set of footsteps reached Jack's attentive ears. This time he tensed for an entirely different reason. He wasn't expecting another person up there for the deed he planned to commit, after all.

The sight of the professor caused his eyes to widen in alarm. His mouth opened to speak as was his habit when he was nervous. "Professor, it's my fault, not Yong's," he said quickly. "I, um...sent her an owl earlier today asking her to come up here because..." He looked down at his shoes, smiling sheepishly. "Well, it's embarrassing, really. But I'm the reason she's here." Glancing shyly over at Seren, he wondered if the girl would understand what he was implying.

"If anyone should get into trouble for us being here, it's me. I take full responsibility." He owed the poor, innocent underclassman that much, at least. Hanging his head in what might have been shame, he awaited the professor's response.

Seren's face had begun to scrunch in confusion and nervousness as nothing seemed to be happening, and then she heard a voice... The professor's voice, no less, yelling at her and the older boy she did not know... And using her last name. Seren jumped and her face crumpled, because she had no idea what was going on, why she would be in trouble for just following what she had been told to do in the letter. She began to turn, her head actually a little turned towards Professor Horne, and her expression was showing only shock and betrayal.

And then the stranger boy spoke up, leaving her turning towards HIM instead, the betrayal outweighing the shock now. She had been tricked by this boy? She did not know him.

Her blue eyes went wide and huge and she looked between the Professor and him, several times, before speaking up. When she did, her voice was soft and filled with upset and sadness and also confusion.

"I... Yes, as he said, I received an Owl that... Told me to come here. I do not understand why, but I thought... I thought I was going to be in trouble if I did not come." She did not know if she should mention the part about how the letter had CLAIMED to be from the Professor. Part of her wanted to, so that Professor Horne would know that Seren had thought she was following a teacher's orders. Another part of her, the more generous part, thought she maybe should not, because the boy had at least admitted to his prank so readily, and was willing to take responsibility for his trickery.

Finally, she simply said "I truly did not mean to be breaking rules."

The entire time she spoke, her expression flickered between a mask hiding her emotions, and having everything on show, as if she was TRYING to hide them but still not very good at it.

Something wasn't right. The girl had made it to the edge, her figure very near to the barrier. It should have been the case that any moment, Burnett would have been there, hoisting her over it, or whatever plan it was that he had in order to send her over the edge. Another shake of the head at just how ridiculous this whole notion was. That Evelynn had actually agreed to be complicit in a task so dangerous.. But never mind that now. The deal had been struck. Surely this meant he owed her another favour as well, and she would not be one to turn down the opportunity to bank those little tokens. But as the time passed... Nothing transpired.

In fact...

Brows rose over the edge of the omnioculars as she observed, catching sight of the appearance of Professor Horne shepherding the girl away from the edge of the balcony. Stomach dropping, there was only one conclusion to this entire situation. The time had passed. There would be no recovery now. With the professor there, she could not think of a way that the plan could still be realistically carried out. They ought to have thought of a plan B.

Perhaps if she'd brought a bludger with her, she might have been able to release it towards the trio. To feign apology that it had escaped practice. Had it careen right for the girl, convincingly enough to elicit a scream of fear before stopping it in place with a freezing charm. Or perhaps she simply could have brought the girl along with her on her broom to hunt the snitch. Evelynn had been practicing a few advanced manoeuvres that even those with strong stomachs and a familiarity with the broom struggled to stomach.

With a shake of her head, she lowered the omnioculars and dropped from her broom, feet thudding gently in the padded grass. A hand swiped up her back to shoulder it, the other reach to snatch her broom from its position hovering above her shoulder. She would check in with Burnett later that evening to confer about their next plan.
