Thunder and Lightening
Bea shook with excitement as Ma led her into the quaint, little shop. She’d never been inside it but had always wanted to. The longing every time she and her family visited Diagon Alley was apparent, Ma or Nan dragging her along by the back of her clothes towards the other end of the street. Usually, it was accompanied by some whining and wailing on her part. Ma, last year when the had come to get Bea’s supplies for Hogwarts, had said no to a pet. She had more important things to worry about then a pet. And she knew that Bea would spend her entire time looking after said pet, instead of classes. That had made Bea determined to prove her mother wrong. Excellent grades and some encouraging words from her Professors were enough to convince Ma that this year she was ready for a pet.Date: 16th July 2022

And so, that was why, late on a Saturday afternoon during Summer, the mother and daughter duo entered the Magical Menagerie shop. The kindly old couple spotted them at once, even though feathers and fur stood in there way. Must be because they are surrounded by animals all day. Ma went directly to the old man, signaling that she was here to get a pet for Bea. He nodded, showing her along some of the aisle and the numerous pets on offer. That left Bea, alone, standing near the front counter. She scrunched her hands, pulling them close to her body and puffed out a breath. All the excitement left her body. No matter how old she was and how mature she thought she was, being in a strange place still freaked her out. That first train ride to Hogwarts was an example. Thank goodness she had made friends.
“Sugar cookie dear?” At the question, Bea whipped her eyes off the shop floor. An old woman was standing behind the counter, holding a glass jar filled with cookies out to her. “Uhhh, sure. I mean, yes, thank you.” She made sure to use English, even though her accent was strong. Da insisted this was the best way for people to understand her. Just as she went to grab a cookie though, a flash of gold shot out a knocked the jar from the woman’s outstretched hand. Bea let out a gasp, recoiling her hand at the last second. On the counter, sat a deep golden rabbit. It didn’t seem startled or think that it was out of place at all. “Oh really!” snapped the old woman. “That wasn’t very nice at all.” With a wave of her wand, the jar mended itself and the split cookies were dusted off and returned to the jar. “I’m sorry dear. This little darling like the cookies all for themselves.” She pointedly handed one to Bea at that, the rabbit eyeing the cookie the entire time. Bea smiled slightly. Snapping the cookie in half, she gulped one and timidly gave the other half to the rabbit. Maybe she could make a friend?
The rabbit sniffed the cookie, seemingly thinking about whether it was good enough. Deciding it was, it delicately nibbled the cookie, taking it from Bea’s hand. The woman smiled. “Looks like you made a friend. This one won’t take treats from just anyone. How would you like to take her home?” Bea smiled at that. “Really?! I’d love to!” She turned to find her mother, who just at that moment was coming back towards the counter with the old man. “Ma! The lady said I could have the rabbit. She said it would be a good pet for me.” Okay, maybe she had embellished a little but still. How cute was the creature. Ma eyed the creature skeptically. “Ya sure Bea? A cat wad be better.” Bea shook her head in response, turning her eyes to the two shop keepers for help. The man stepped in to help her. “Rabbits are easy enough pets, and this young one is especially friendly and sociable. Good with transfiguration as well.” That seemed to settle it. As long as her pet could help with classes, it was alright. Ma handed over the money, a whopping, well in Ma’s mind anyway, 12 galleons and Bea was able to take her new pet home. A collar engraved with her pets name Eos, bed and food, and they were free to go home.
