Today was the day! Monica had been looking forward to this since the moment she heard about having a pet. All her life at home she had begged her parents for a dog, or a cat, or any furry creature to have as a companion. The answer always being no. But now, she could finally pick out and own her very one little furry friend! It took quite a while to be able to save up the money, but it was worth every sickly Monica could get her hands on.
She walked into the store, hardly able to contain her excitement. The man at the front desk was filling out some sort of paper work, he looked up as the bell signaled a costumer had entered his store. He was a tall, kind looking older man, with a bit of a pot belly, but eyes that were gentle and full of wisdom.
He smiled at Monica as she entered, welcoming her to the shop. She approached the counter.
"What is it I can help you with today young witch?" He spoke as if sensing Monica's enthusiasm, and his words fed the fire of anticipation boiling inside her.
"I have come seeking a pet, I have saved up my sickle and am here to choose who my partner in magic shall be." Monica took on a role while saying this, as if she was a knight on a grand quest fro treasure, or fame, when in reality she was a girl buying an animal.
The man smiled, returning her imagination with his own flavour to it.
"Well I would be honored to help you picking the perfect companion. Do you have an idea of the type of creature you would wish to tame?"
The two smiled. Monica shrugged her shoulders, looking around the shop at the different animals that encircled her.
"I know that it would be nice to have one that is easy to carry around."
To be honest, Monica was so wrapped up in the fact she was getting a pet, she didn't really think of what pet she would like. But she knew she wanted to be able to have it with her at all times, so even though a cat and a dog were classic choices, they seemed like more of a bother to have following you.
The man came around from the counter and lead Monica to the back of the store.
"Well we have all sorts of small creatures, from frogs and toads, to owls that sit on your shoulder. Pygmy puffs and of course rats."

Monica stopped in front of the display area housing a collection of rats. They were scurrying about, chasing each other and playing games. Monica laughed as one flipped its cage mate to the ground, and began to lick its belly.
"Ah I see you have found a fondness for rats. Anyone in particular catch your eye?"
Monica gazed at the common, white furred rat that had just been pinned to the ground. It's eyes like pearls looked back at her, nose twitching, ears perking forwards. It walked closer to the edge of the cage, coming up and laying it's paw right on the glass, all while locking eyes with Monica.
"That one."
That man picked up the rat and placed it in Monica's arms. She noticed that much like herself, this rat had some darker patches of grey along it's fur, not like spots, but one grey patch over its head, one down its right leg, and some spots behind it's ears.
Monica smiled and l stroked the back of the rat.
"Like it was meant to be." The shop keeper smiled, and walked Monica to the counter for processing and paying for her new friend.
