Pet  Webs We Weave  TW: Arachnophobia
Two years ago Peri purchased a pet cat, right before tarantulas become available :( I've elected to come back and nab one of these instead, under the pretense that he's bringing it along in year four from his arachnid collection at home. His feline Athena- who was often aloof and antisocial- is much more comfortable remaining at the Dralt residence as a house cat.

"What's wrong...?"
At the end of each school year, when Pericles arrived home weary from farewells and a long train ride, his first priority was dashing to his room to inspect his arachnids. Collecting the creepy crawlers had been a hobby of his since he was a small child. There was something alien about their beady eyes, eerie movements, and mute nature. They could not cry out when they were hungry, or hurt, or lonesome. One had to truly invest in understanding them, learning the habits of their species alongside individual idiosyncrasies. Tarantulas were more personable than folks often gave them credit for. Eccentric that he was, young Pericles had harbored an admiration for arachnids. He enjoyed the unique challenge of learning to understand them. They numbered many, a collection which nearly spanned an entire wall in his room, multiple tanks embedded in a custom shelving unit. Of them all, Fílos was one of his favorites. The Black Webber's designs had always seemed as art to him, what with the uncanny symmetry of their glistening black threads. How content he was when brought to the canopy bed, happily weaving his webs between the frame, albeit much to the dismay of the housekeeper. Pericles would lay below on his back, following the Webber's methodical motions to organize his thoughts, lapsing into a sort of meditation. He was acting irregularly now, and it worried his keeper to no end.

While Pericles could depend upon his parents to look after the collection in his absence, the creatures seemed aware that they were not the same keeper. Fílos had been pacing restlessly for days, his father admitted, trying to assuage the boy's nerves over this news by assuring "He must have known you'd be home soon." As much as he appreciated the effort, Pericles was certain that couldn't be correct. "What's wrong, precious?" He muttered again, arms folded, chin resting atop them to bring himself face-to-tank. His Webber continued to trek back and forth behind the glass. The tarantula's stress was Peri's stress, yet it would take no effort to convince his folks to allow an emergency trip to Magical Menagerie. "He's been pacing for some time now," he was lamenting to the shopkeep, gesturing miserably to the hyperactive Webber in its clear carrier. The man took a close look, his round glasses magnifying his eyes to comical degrees. "His substrate is clean, he has plenty of food and water... I don't know what else to do for him. He only stops when I...." A hand was slid through the carrier window. On realizing his sporadic stomping had led him directly into a warm palm, Fílos stopped, settled down, and rested. The man chuckled. "He isn't ill. He's lonesome, from the looks of it!" This would be rectified as they re-bonded over the summer. When it was time to return to Hogwarts, Pericles wouldn't make the same mistake of leaving the silly sentimental creature behind.
