Scavenging the Shores
Saturday, October 16, 2021 - Early Afternoon
This was not her first visit to the lake on the grounds of the Hogwarts castle. While it was only a month or so in to her first year at Hogwarts, the Great Lake was a common area for Mireia to hang around when she was bored or looking for some sort of adventure. But so far between her studies, she'd only made it down here a handful of times. Today was a weekend and so she had no classes, so she had a bit more time than usual to hang around the lake.
She saw in her Herbology syllabus that later in the year they would be learning about lake plants. She enjoyed Herbology, not because she was generally interested in knowing how to grow plants, while she was but only slightly, more because many of the plants she learned about in Herbology could be used in various potions. And Potions was her favorite class.
While they had not yet started learning about lake plants in Herbology, Mireia had skimmed ahead in her textbook to identify some lake plants that she might be able to find here at the Great Lake. If she did manage to find any, she could collect them and start up her own stores of potion ingredients for later on down the line, when she eventually learned more potions.
A few of the lake plants mentioned in her textbook were, unfortunately, plants that were aquatic and therefore grown underneath the water. These of course, were out of her reach, as she was not allowed to swim in the Great Lake, per school rules. Not that she was very much interested in doing so either way, as the lake was extremely cold this time of year. But she did learn of at least one lake plant in her textbook that she might be able to find on the shores. Not including the non-magical plants that could be used for a variety of non-magical mixtures.
Thankfully there was no snow quite yet and so the ground, despite being mostly dormant for the winter already, was still clear in her sight. This way she had a chance of finding any useful plants or herbs without having to dig through snow.
Mireia began her hunt at the large beech tree that rest of the shores of the Great Lake. It was a good starting point for her because it was a very obvious monument on the shore so she could encircle the lake entirely and know exactly where she started and therefore where she should end. She had only just arrived and started her search at the shore, the lake waves licking their way up into the sand. She stayed alert, not wanting her boots to get wet, while also simultaneously looking to identify any plants she could see around her.
To others, if anyone was around and watching, she would look very focused her eyes to the ground, her knees slightly bent as she walked, so her head could be just a little bit closer to the ground and gain a little bit more detail in her sight.
She wore her winter coat this late fall day, along with her normal black combat boots. Underneath them she wore knee-high fuzzy black socks to keep her legs and feet warm. Thankfully her boots were fairly waterproof as long as she didn't go too deep. Her winter coat, also black, fell to her knees. It was lined with some sort of silvery fur, that she was not aware of the source, but it kept her very warm. She had it wrapped about her and so her shirt was concealed. Her pants were her, somewhat loose, black cargo pants that she had rolled up a bit as normally they would fall close to her ankles. She didn't want them to get wet, though, so she rolled them up to her mid calf.
She did not wear the hood of her winter coat up at the moment, so her shiny black hair, which she let loose today rather than confining it in her normal braids, covered her ears and warmed them. With her she also brought her school bag, but had emptied it so now it was filled only with her glass vials and her cauldron. These were normally used for her potions class, but for now they worked well as caring containers for anything she might find.

Quinn walked out to what would most likely end up being her gun favorite place at Hogwarts, the Great Lake. It had many things you could do. Like look in the water, Find cool things like rocks and bugs. You can't swim in the lake which is a down side, but there are still plenty of other things you can do.
When she reached the lake she sat down on the grass, she loved the feel of the grass. It was fall, so it was kinda cold. It didn't help that it was early afternoon. She also was wearing her school robes. Quinn had brought her homework but had no intention to do it just yet. She looked around the lake to see if anyone was doing anything interesting.
There was a girl, she looked like she was looking for something that she had dropped. Wanting to help she got up and walked over to the girl. "Hey? Did you drop something?".
The girl was wearing a winter coat, but not the hood which revealed her black hair. The coat was also black. "My names Quinn, I'm a first year slytherin" She introduced. She thought that she might as well tell the girl her name.

Scavenging the Shores
Crouching close to the shore, her head was buried in the reeds and weeds that grew in such a damp space. She nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard a voice close to her. Thankfully she. Caught herself with one hand that flew from it's resting place between of knee and chin and steadied her swaying body by propping itswlf in the wet ground at the edge of the lake.
Agh, she thought, and pushed herself up to a standing position. She looked at her hand, it was covered in mud and a bit of gras that has been plucked along with it. She shook her hand, trying to clean it with force, and that did most of the trick, but it was still pretty covered in grime. She didn't want to wipe in on her robes though.
"Uh," she started to respond to the voice. She turned and saw it was a girl, a fellow student. She feared it might be a Professor at first. Not that she was doing anything wrong.
"No," she chuckled at the situation, "I'm just looking at the plants. We just learned about lake plants in Herbology so I wanna see if there are any here I can find." She winced a bit at the end, she didn't want to give away her plans if there did end up being potion ingredients here, other students might find out and gather them all and she would be out of luck
Her hand was still being held out at her side, careful to not touch it to her clothes. She looked around, trying to find a solution to this issue.
It was obvious, of course. She turned away from the girl and crept up to the edge of the lake. Bending down a bit she splashed her fouled hand in the lake water to clean it off. That didn't count as swimming in the lake right? Of course not, she thought.
Turning back to the girl, who had just introduced herself, she replied "Mireia, I'm a first year too. I think I've seen you around before." The girl was from Slytherin. Quinn she said. Maybe Mireia would be able to remember that.
