Diagon Alley was nothing short of gorgeous, and nothing like Enya had seen before. In her hometown, small corners that held long, winding streets, was nothing short of common. But it was nothing like this, the flashy colors and everyone moving in unison, it was almost overwhelming.
She had convinced her father that she could go get her books on her own. He was apprehensive but let her go into Flourish and Blotts on her own. He knew she could handle herself, but with her lack of awareness, he wondered if she could go without getting into an accident.
And an accident she had gotten into. Had Enya been paying a little more attention, she might've not bumped into the young boy buying his books. As fate would due its course, though, her steps had intertwined with his and caused her to come crashing down. As if the situation wasn't embarrassing enough, her books clashed on the ground and spread out everywhere near her feet.
"Oh my gosh!" She yelped, looking up at the boy. "Are you okay?"
Though the boy hadn't come tumbling down with her, Enya was sure that the situation might've scared him, or at least shocked him. Luckily, the boy hadn't been holding anything in his arms, otherwise the situation could've gone quite sour.
She pushed herself up off of the ground and dusted off the skirt she was wearing. When she turned to the boy, she flashed her signature bright smile.
"I'm Enya, are you going to Hogwarts too?"

Nestled quietly in the bustling, busy crowd, Elliott searched aimlessly through the earthy leather spines of several books, some of which he owned and could recognize from his own shelf at home. The boy pulled out a emerald green-dyed book, flipping to the table of contents and then to the first chapter. He, satisfied, finished poring over a certain paragraph, and tucked it gently back into the collection, and turned to move on.

Met with the sight of someone a bit too close for comfort, he tensed up and gasped, a noise in between shock and fear. As they collided, the young girl came tumbling down onto the floor, his glasses run askew.

“Oh my gosh, are you okay? I’m Enya, are you going to Hogwarts too?”

“Ah!” Elliott said at once as he regained his sense. “I’m so sorry, Enya.” He half-kneeled down awkwardly, knees bent but not meeting the floor. As he pat down the floor for the girl’s books, he sprung up again with a bundle of leather and paper.

“I’m Elliott. Elliott Brighton,” he replied. Adjusting his glasses, he grinned back nervously and reached out, offering a handshake. “Um, here are.. are your books I suppose.”

Enya's smile was brighter than the sun when the boy replied. She hadn't even started aboard the train, and she had already made a friend! He seemed a little on the quieter side, but that was okay! Enya was more than aware of her own bright personality.
“Um, here are... are your books, I suppose.”

She quickly took the books back into her own hands and placed them inside her leather satchel. It was one that her great-grandmother had once owned, before passing it down to Enya as a birthday present. The satchel was well-made and could probably hold as many books as Enya desired. Not that she read very often.
"Thank you, Elliott!"
She then pointed to the shelf he was standing next to. Enya personally didn't recognize any of the books, they looked like longer books- probably the kind with no pictures in them. She was good at reading, but she had a harder time taking in the words and understanding them. It was just easier to not read at all!
"Are you interested in these kinds of books?" she asked, lowering her hand and resting them in her pockets. The boys clothing wasn't similar to hers at all, in fact, she only recognized them when she had got a pair of her own just a couple of minutes prior. Her father had called them "robes" and said that they were what wizards and witches wore when out. When Enya and her father had arrived, she felt almost out of place, with her "muggle outfit". It was just a normal skirt and coat, what was so wrong with that?

Elliott faltered with his outstretched hand before lowering it. How awkward…

Enya’s bright smile dazzled the boy. He blinked twice, dazed, and tilted his head. This girl is.. incredibly cheerful. he thought to himself, a poor attempt to describe the girl. He’d always been admittedly socially inept, and although he had a vast vocabulary, garnered from the years of reading, he struggled to find a word sufficiently accurate. Perhaps it was the reading, actually, that was causing his awkwardness. Homeschooled and often isolated for much of his childhood, Elliott was familiar and comfortable with spending time by himself, but not with others.

As Enya pointed at the shelf, his gaze followed the other’s line of sight.

“Are you interested in these kind of books?” she asked.

Elliott smiled faintly, feeling his face warm up in guilty embarrassment. He mumbled something about “on occasion” and “reading.” He reached to touch the back of his neck, pulling a strand of hair taut, his natural response to being pressured.

“Well, I.. It’s-“ he replied, struggling to find an appropriate response. “Reading is- uh- a hobby I use to pass the time.. The longer the better. I mean, that’s- yeah, that’s what I think at least.” His grin grew slightly wider, and he seemed to be satisfied with his response.

When Elliott started speaking, Enya had wondered if she was losing her hearing. His voice was so shaky and quiet, but she felt bad asking him to speak up. He seemed so nervous- Enya wasn't scary, was she?!
"Reading is- uh- a hobby I use to pass the time... The longer the better. I mean, that’s- yeah, that’s what I think at least."

Elliott seemed more passionate about reading than meeting new people, Enya thought. Unfortunately for him, she didn't really care about whether or not the boy was awkward. She desperately needed a friend who wasn't a "muggle". If she were to stay at this school- away from home, mind you- with no contact to her previous best friends, she'd have to find someone to hang out with.
"Wow, I admire your passion for reading!" she chirped. "I wish I was good at it, but I just don't really like it too much."
This part wasn't necessarily true, Enya did enjoy reading, but her attention span was too short, and connecting the dots was a bit of a task for her. It was easier to find other things she enjoyed, like sewing, or playing music. When Enya was born, one of her fathers wanted her to be a genius, like, become the next 'Hermione Granger', or something.
"Is there anything else you like to do? Besides reading, of course." She hoped they had at least one similar interest, Enya really couldn't get behind hanging out in the library all day. Maybe Elliott liked taking walks?

At the realization the girl would not falter, Elliott reluctantly continued the conversation. It wasn’t that he disliked the girl. In fact, he would argue that it was actually on the contrary. He began to enjoy the company of Enya and her bubbly tendencies. After all, it wouldn’t hurt to make a friend before his year at Hogwarts began, so he wouldn’t be a total loner. Maybe it was better that way.

“Wow, I admire your passion for reading!” she would exclaim, making Elliott grin stupidly and grow redder. “I wish I was good at it, but I just don’t really like it too much.”

He felt glorious and pride for himself, fidgeting with his hands. Was that truly something for which Enya could find praise in? Is he acting like a “nerd?” He wished bitterly he knew what Enya truly thought of him.

“Is there anything else you like to do? Besides reading, of course.” For a moment, Elliott seemed to forget every one of his interests.

“Well, um, I enjoy.. the arts in particular. I like music ‘n play an instrument or two..” Elliott looked away sheepishly, and began tallying on his fingers. “I also.. enjoy drawing.. and.. don’t laugh at me.” The boy turned back to make solemn eye contact with Enya before continuing. “Theatre.” The tone in which he said this was incredibly grave.

Seeing the pride swell up in Elliott's face made Enya breathe a sigh of relief. At least he didn't find her annoying, which was usually people's first reactions. She definitely had a strong personality, so Elliott taking kindly to it made her even more cheery (if that was even possible-).
“I also... enjoy drawing... and... don’t laugh at me." Elliott paused. "Theatre." His solemn eyes confused Enya quite a bit- why did he look so grim and solemn all of a sudden? She knew in the "muggle" world that theatre kids were typically considered annoying, but Elliott seemed rather calm for that, did he not?
Enya probably wouldn't have been aware of the stereotypes surrounding theatre kids if her dad hadn't been one of the most annoying ones she had known. Taking Enya and her father to every single show within a 50-kilometer radius! His glory days of performing had long since been overdue, though. Her father always bragged about "how sweet your dad looked when-" ugh!
"Oh, don't worry, my dad was a theatre kid!" she laughed. "My father and my dad would spend hours when I was little, telling me all about these shows I would never get to see!"
She started laughing even harder, recalling a specific memory. "One time, my dad went to see that 'Hamilton' show, with all the original actors- without my father, mind you- and my father never forgave him for it!"
Her laughter faded after a moment, wait... was her dad still waiting for her to buy her books?!

Elliott reminisces upon his parents’ initial apprehensiveness when he expressed his interest for theatre. In particular, his mother’s disapproving expression and distinctly uneasy “hmm..” He was glad that his newfound companion didn’t find much abnormality in such a hobby. The young wizard feared for what others would say about this; if his mother didn’t approve of it, then other wizard families surely wouldn’t! He eventually persuaded his parents to grant him permission to go out on his own to watch musicals and plays by himself in muggle theatres.

“Oh don’t worry, my dad was a theatre kid! My father and my dad would spend hours when I was little, telling me all about these shows I would never get to see!” Enya would laugh, a twinkle in her eye. “One time, my dad went to see that ‘Hamilton’ show, with all the original actors- without my father, mind you- and my father never forgave him for it!”

Elliott, slightly alarmed at Enya’s amusement, laughed uncomfortably alongside her. “Yeah- haha, um, I’ve heard plenty about your shows in the muggle world. Hamilton seems to be very-very popular!” replied Elliott enthusiastically. “That Wizard of Oz show is also a little- very intriguing. Is that really how you muggles see the magical world?”

Enya stopped laughing, and bore a peculiar look on her face.

“That Wizard of Oz show is also a little- very intriguing. Is that really how you muggles see the magical world?”

Enya pondered for a moment- sure, when she was little, she thought that was exactly how magic was. But as she got older, she had learned that, those movies and plays were mostly jokes about fiction and fantasy. Though, it took such a long time for her to realize that.
"I don't think so, at least not adults, anyway," She shrugged. "When I was little, I really thought it was real. I'm not very smart, though."
She chuckled again, before peering inside her bag. She just needed to one copy of "Hogwarts, A History", and then she'd be finished with book shopping. She did a quick search around the area they were in, it looked like she would have to look somewhere else in the store to find the book she needed.
"Come on, let's go find 'Hogwarts, A History'." She said, turning around to face away from the shelf. If anyone had slightly more careful eyes, they would be able to see that the book Enya needed was right in front of her.
She had already turned to look around the store, trying to find the book she was clumsily ignoring. Enya paused, turning back to Elliott.
"Huh?" Enya raised an eyebrow. "What's wrong?"

Elliott might've disagreed with Enya on that statement. Her mentioning that she wasn't so smart made him wonder what she thought was smart?
To be fair, she did bump into him and fall down, and drop her books. She was so cheerful that he didn't even mind that she did so. Enya might've been a close friend for future adventures at Hogwarts. Of course. only if his parents would agree with his actions...
When Enya ignored the book in front of her, Elliott thought it might've been on purpose. After all, how could she not see the gleaming book that was right in front of her eyes? However, she did mention, just a moment ago, how she wasn't the brightest. He paused for a moment or two, contemplating whether or not to show the book to her.
To not make her feel bad, he pulled the book from the shelf and followed Enya as the two of them paced around the store. He paused. tugging at her scarf and then pointing to the book in his hand.
"It- uh- was on this shelf," he changed his direction to motion to a shelf they had just passed. "You missed it."
He hoped she wouldn't notice the fact that the shelf was labeled something like "cooking", and just take the book without thinking. If he was right about her personality, then she might not even realize that the book was taken long ago.
