The lake shimmered beautifully as the sunlight hit it, a rare but beautiful sight to see.  There was a reason Hogwarts was always dark and covered in fog or rain clouds.  It was located in the north of the country, where the sun rarely shines.  They had a few days or weeks in the year where this all changed, and it baked every day under the baking hot sun.  Most of these times were in the middle of their "Summer".  Occasionally, however, you'd find a nice sunny day at other times too.  This was one of those rare times.  School had just started, first years had just started coming through the doors and explored these halls for the very first time.  It was coming towards the end of the Summer period and soon, Autumn will be upon us.  As such, the weather was actually pretty decent.  It wasn't too cold this week - and the glimpse of a Sun was worth being outside for.

Serena was one of those first years.  She had recently started at Hogwarts, getting around late to most of her classes and still trying to figure out how to get anywhere. Exploring seemed to help make sense of everything.  During such a travel, Serena managed to find herself outside, exploring the grounds of the castle.  She approached the giant lake that surrounded the castle and started to wander, aimlessly around there.  It was around about this time that she had managed to come across a great spot.  One that overlooked a beautiful sight.  There was a giant tree, which she propped herself against.  As she sat there, she looked out to see the sun hitting the edge of the castle that she had just left.  It reflected into the water, which made everything look even more beautiful.  The young Hufflepuff sat there for a little while, taking in the sight and appreciating the peaceful sound of the water flowing close by.

Without intending to, the girl had found a great spot to sleep.  She didn't know when it happened or even how but Serena was on the grass soon enough.  She lay on her side, her head on top of her school bag.  Her arms were out in front of her, loosely holding onto a book that she had opened up to read.  In all honesty, she had read about five pages before getting tired and dozing off.  However, to anyone else stumbling across the scene, they would see either one of two things.

Either a girl who was so engrossed in her book that she read far too much of it, wore herself out and accidentally dozed off whilst reading it. Or a girl who was still reading the book, wide away but just laying on her side.  It all sort of depended on what angle you approached her at and whether or not you could see her eyes were closed and her chest was gently rising and falling in a rhythmic pattern that one would have if they were in a deep slumber.

Classes had been extortionately taxing on Grace's fortitude this week, maintaining top percentile grades whilst attempting to keep some semblance of a social life? Impossible. Grace felt drained; all of her emotional and mental energy had been spent and now she was just an exhausted husk. Back home she completed all of her work without fail, and more than willingly, but in Ballintoy she also had no friends or children her own age. It hadn't been hard to focus on studying when that was all she knew. Grace sighed and picked up the pace, hugging her reading book closer to her chest as she departed the castle. Today she'd decided to go outside, something she rarely did if the pallor of her skin was any indication. Fresh air and solitude would probably do her some good.

As she descended upon the grounds Grace found herself drawn to the sight of the Great Lake. Today had been warmer than recent weeks and the lake laid flat as a mirror beneath the cradle of the mountains, a reflection of the expansive gray skies above. It was unmarred, without ripple or disturbance, as if it'd been frozen in time. It looked peaceful. Grace barely paused before changing course for the body of water, deciding that nobody except herself would be fool enough to ghost along the water's edges. It was easy enough to lose one's self in the beauty of nature and in their own thoughts, and as Grace walked her mind slipped sideways and her pace slowed. Steadily but surely she wandered the curves of the lake, thoughts on other things than her current environment -- more specifically she was thinking about home and how she ought to write a letter to her parents. She'd been writing one each week, attempting to fill it with all of life's little moments; it was hard, she'd never had to share her memories so thoroughly with anyone before.

Pale green eyes drifted from the reflection of the lake, settling on an overlooking tree with a tangle of roots and a thick, viridian canopy. It looked like a decent place to rest and maybe write that letter she'd been thinking so heavily about. Grace climbed the small incline, already slipping the bright yellow strap of her bag off one shoulder only to pause in her actions. There was somebody underneath the tree already. Grace was suddenly at a loss of what to do -- should she approach this stranger and ask to sit with them? Or should she scuttle away like the rodent she secretly was, and subsequently avoid more human interaction. Grace sighed, already knowing exactly which route she was going to take.

Closing the distance between them Grace noticed that the figure was indeed a girl, probably a first year by their size and youthful appearance... and a Hufflepuff! Grace hadn't had much opportunity to interact with any Hufflepuffs -- weren't they supposed to be kind and fair? That was the stereotype at least. As far as stereotyping went, she supposed it was better than approaching a Slytherin lost in reading, they'd probably despise you for the interruption and become malicious, the same going for some Ravenclaws. They didn't enjoy being disrupted from their studies, and sometimes that gross generalization included her. Nonetheless Grace drifted closer and closer, the girl's face still hidden from her sight as she finally halted only a few feet away in order to call out, "Hello? Is this seat taken?"

As soon as the words left Grace's mouth she realized that this strange, sleeping girl was asleep. Regret flooded her features instantly, pinching her brows together and tugging down pinkened lips. Grace frowned impressively and wondered whether it was too late to retreat. It was awkward enough that she'd chosen a tree that was already taken -- they were in a forest, she could easily have avoided her! -- but to wake her up out of sheer obliviousness? That was pretty embarrassing, and infuriating for the one on the receiving end. "S-Sorry! I didn't realize you were... I'm so sorry! I should leave you be, how rude of me," Grace began to apologize, taking a step backwards as if preparing to flee the scene of the crime.

"After all, to the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure.”

When it came to survival techniques, Serena's body seemed to be on point.  The slightest bit of noise or movement could wake her up.  In fact she once fell asleep with headphones in, sitting upright on a chair.  A few of her friends decided to try and take a picture, to capture the moment of her having fallen asleep.  With the headphones in, she couldn't even hear them.  Yet somehow, as they approached and took out the camera, she suddenly woke up with the feeling that she was being watched.  Just being watched was enough to wake her up.  Of course, it was probably simply coincidence and a sense of great timing but it felt like her body just knew when to wake up and suddenly became alerted.

So, any noises were definitely going to wake her up, especially when she was resting in unsafe areas.  Outside, in the middle of a lake, by herself being one of those unsafe areas.  For the most part, Hogwarts seemed safe.  But in general, sleeping outside by yourself was probably not the wisest idea - especially in a secluded area.

Although she didn't quite understand what the girl said, her body reacted to the noise of being called out to.  Sharply inhaling, Serena's eyes snapped open and her body suddenly woke up, alerted.  Sitting up, she gazed around - with the tiniest hint of sleepiness in her eyes - to find the source of distraction.  The young Hufflepuff blinked for a moment as her eyes fell onto a girl.  A young girl.  She looked... guilty?  Serena blinked some more, her body clearly trying to process what was going on.  Why does she look so guilty- what's she up to? Serena wondered, trying to make sense of things as her brain was clearly still asleep.  As it caught up to her, more and more started to make sense.  "Are you okay?" Serena asked curiously, blinking in wonderment.  It then dawned on her and she abruptly jumped onto her feet, shaking her head, "No no- it's fine, you didn't disturb me!" She called out as she stood up.  The book that was in her hand dropped onto the floor as she started to wave her hand in a 'no' sign.  Wha- Oh!  I was reading? Serena thought to herself as she wondered what had just fallen.  In all honesty, she hadn't even realised that the book was in her hand when she woke up.  She certainly didn't remember reading before she fell asleep... Wait- I fell asleep?

Ahh sleep, what wonders it does to people's brains.  Her half asleep brain was still processing information at a nice snail's pace, just to seal the terrible first impression she was already leaving on the present company.

Looking back up to the girl, ignoring the book for the moment, she smiled, "Sorry, I must have dozed off.  Did you ask me something?" She wasn't sure why but she had the feeling a question was asked.  Her ears probably heard the question but her brain couldn't quite remember what it was or even understand.  It certainly didn't seem like the girl was here to assault her or steal her book or anything, so she presumed she wanted something.  Smiling the whole time to try and ease the girl's embarrassment or awkwardness.
