Surprise!

It seemed like it had just been two weeks since the two had met. Like it was just yesterday when Rhea had heard the commotion all around the Bishop Manor, and spotted a new family moving into the mansion next door. She remembered rushing to get out of the house and go see if the family had a daughter, or a son her age. But her dreams had been crushed the moment she saw her father standing, arms crossed, in front of the double mahogany doors. “They’re not of the same stature as us,” he’d said, and the air had rushed out of the young blonde. Her shoulders sagged and she trudged back to her room, locking her door and not seeing anyone until it was dinnertime.
That was when she was 5.
She’d properly met the family next door one fateful day when she was 7 years old. Rhea clearly remembered the day where she had decided to go against her parents’ wishes and try to see the family next door. She’d run through what seemed to be acres of land and through the mini-forest that separated the two properties, before finding herself at the outskirts of the neighboring mansion. She’d thought she would have to wait for a few hours to catch a glimpse of anyone, but fortunately for her, there were three children playing around in the front yard. Suddenly losing all her resolve, Rhea turned around to leave but she heard a soft exclamation telling her to wait. Turning around, slowly and gingerly, Rhea remembered how ecstatic she’d been.
“Come play with us!” the shortest of the three, a happy-looking brunette girl, had exclaimed. Rhea had smiled and joined in without hesitation. They’d introduced themselves: the youngest, shortest one was Zara; the boy was Darius, and the middle girl was Amber. Zara was the one who was her age, albeit her being rather short for her age. Nevertheless, Rhea had hopped in effortlessly and spent hours playing with them - until the sun began to set and she thought it time to return back home.
And now? Rhea and Zara had been friends for coming close to two years, and today was a special day - Zara’s birthday. The two had arranged to meet in their usual meeting place - the hidden tree they’d found in the forest between their two properties - and Rhea remembered to get there a little early in order to set up Zara’s surprise. Soon, she heard the brunette climbing up, breathing heavily, and held her palm over her mouth to cover her giggles. As soon as she saw Zara’s head peak through the entrance, she leaped up and exclaimed:
“Surprise!”
the trouble is, if you don't risk anything -- you risk more.
