Dexter woke up. Not that he wanted to, as it was Saturday. But instead of doing his homework yesterday, he decided to pull pranks and goof around on his broomstick with his friends. So, the day he favored the most would now be a make-up work day which he hated. Oh, what the hell, I have all weekend to do homework! Today won’t be a homework day for me. He thought. He got up of his bed and got dressed, then put a black hoodie on top of his black long-sleeved shirt and black sweatpants, even though it was warm outside. It was one of his preferences.

He sat down for a while to read “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” He looked over and saw a mousetrap, just lying on the ground. He picked it up. It would come in handy in pranking later.

He went to the great hall, ready to eat breakfast. He saw the headmaster Solomon Lear talking to the other staff. He looked in his bag and saw a mousetrap. He grinned. Perfect. He looked around and saw a spot that was empty and someone was obviously sitting there and got up. He wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity. No way. He grabbed his mousetrap and snuck over, making sure no one was looking. He then flung the mousetrap on the bench, and returned to his table, smiling. Every now and then he turned around to see if the person sitting there was coming.

Breakfast on the weekends was always one of the more laidback of the meals. People tended to trickle in with an inconsistent flow and hung around for a long time after. Katrina felt it was one of the perfect opportunities to talk to people without the obligation of sticking around for a long time. If conversation got dry or shifted to a topic less of interest it was rather easy to slip into another group or say you had to leave. It had become a little tradition of sorts to make sure Katrina was still socializing with people outside of events and the Common Room, it was also a good way to check up on her friends, even if from a distance.

Today was one of those days Katrina planned to drift from group to group. She made a small plate of food and picked at it, surveying who was up already. There was a familiar face down the table a bit and sat her pair of gloves by the placemat, hopefully indicating to others that the seat was taken so she could roam around a bit. Katrina made her way around the table, waving and smiling, checking up to make sure her friends were accounted for.

It wasn’t long before Katrina had done her rounds and a headache started to make itself painfully apparent. She quickly deducted it was up to the noise and the slightly overwhelming clamor. Katrina returned to her seat, one hand rubbing the back of her neck in a futile attempt to release the tension.

Just as Katrina went to sit down she felt something sharp. She instantly jumped up and yelped, drawing attention from a few peers around that turned their heads. Though the pinch didn’t stop right away, it continued and Katrina brushed at her backside, managing to snap it again on her finger. She quickly drew it in front where she could see a mousetrap. Katrina sat down again, checking where she sat this time and pried the trap off of her finger. She shook a hand and looked around, searching for anyone suspicious.

There were still a few people looking and Katrina’s damaged ego pushed to her action, “Who did this?” Katrina said, loud enough for people in the general vicinity to hear, not many people did turn. Katrina stood up again and held out the mouse trap. She knew she was making a bit of a scene but if she pretended nothing happened, chances were more would follow. Hopefully whoever thought it was funny to pull a prank like that (how did they get a mousetrap anyway?) hopefully they would be so prideful as to stand out.

Otherwise Katrina would turn on her heels and leave, not asking for a bigger scene than she’d already made.

Dexter had been watching when she came, figuring she must be the one that sat in the spot on the bench. He grinned, watching as she made her way toward the open bench spot. He elbowed his friends who began watching as well and grinning. She apparently had a brother named Liam, who also smiled and said, “She’s gonna kill you.” And then-

Just as she sat down, she launched up as quick as a rocket and yelped. Dexter and his friends were laughing. But that wasn’t all, she then snapped it on her finger! Dexter and his friends howled with laughter, as it had worked better then he had planned.

She then pried it off of her finger and shouted, “Who did this?” Dexter was quiet for a moment, then he burst out laughing again. “Don’t feel special. Everyone gets pranked, somehow.” He said as she noticed she was glaring daggers.

Based on her looks, she was either third or fourth year. Two or three years older than him. But Dexter didn’t care about how old or young people were, if he saw prey, he swooped upon it.

“Also, can I have the trap back? I might need it…” He said as though nothing had happened at all.

It took a moment for what happened to actually sink in for Katrina. She somehow ended up standing up and making a scene without thinking too much about what was happening. Normally Katrina wouldn’t have made such a big of a scene but a prank shouldn’t ever go unnoticed, and there was a miniscule part of her that was amused at falling for the prank to begin with but she pushed the mere thought away. When she did have a moment to think, she realized there was a group of friends laughing, and one in particular pointing. Katrina bit the side of her cheek, very much not appreciating being the butt of their joke.

The group was one she wasn’t very familiar with, younger than her and not typically those she would choose to associate with. Then she saw Liam there, her brother, and immediately, Katrina blamed him. He used to always be pranking her, or anyone that seemed an easy target. But this didn’t seem to be his style, he more preferred something that was visual and lasted, not just a mousetrap.

One in particular, a boy, seeming around his first year or two, stood out to Katrina. He and his friends were just absolutely dying laughing at her expanse and Katrina just slowly crossed her arms, more just mildly disappointed than anything. Then he spoke up, “Don’t feel special. Everyone gets pranked somehow.” Katrina narrowed her eyes just slightly. Sure it was a good comeback, but it just made Katrina look more like a fool and she was feeling rather done with that. Katrina was near certain it was him that had planned it, being the first to speak up and looking rather proud of himself.

Katrina bit her cheek again, keeping her mouth closed so she didn’t snap at him. It wasn’t worth her time anyway. He was just a first year picking on older kids. It wouldn’t be long before some upper year zapped him senseless with a clever spell or two. Katrina wasn’t one to do that per say, but she felt her wand pressing against her arm in the holster she made, tempting her.

Then he went so far as to request the mouse trap back. “Oh, this? You want this?” Katrina’s tone was mockingly nice, making it evident there was much sarcasm that fueled it. Katrina looked down at the mouse trap and subtly flipped it so anything touching it would snap again. She threw the mousetrap at him, underhand but still much harder than she needed to. Katrina was satisfied to note that it was near perfect aim. At last dueling had paid off.
