fortuity
──────────────────────────────♕──────────────────────────────It had been a while since Everly had heard back from her mysterious letter friend, Hiraeth. For some reason, she'd still held out hope the first month but soon realized her reply wasn't coming. She figured maybe Hiraeth had forgotten, or the letter had gotten lost along the way, and that it wasn't her fault, but the pit in her gut and the nagging voice in her head seemed to be convinced it was because Hiraeth found her too annoying, too irritating, a bothersome, that she'd done something wrong. After a while, she taught herself to forget it.
Then, magically, one day, there was a reply. Even though she stopped coming to the Owlery daily, she still visited it to deliver her monthly letter to her parents. Everly could tell from the state of the letter that it had been there for a while, perhaps maybe a month (though, not longer than hers had been waiting, she thought bitterly) or so longer. When she first noticed it, she stopped and stared for a moment, dumbfounded. She hadn't known what to expect. Part of her wanted to not reply, to let the letter sit for as long as hers had, but the rest wanted desperately to reply. As stubborn and vindictive as she could be, Everly had one major flaw. She latched onto people too easily, and when it was possible to get them back, she'd leap at any chance. So when she'd read Hiraeth's letter saying they missed her, she ran for her quill.
Writing the letter itself was an issue. In the months since she and Hiraeth had first begun writing, she'd grown both in maturity and writing skills. It was much harder than simply putting quill to paper and writing whatever came to mind, as she'd done before. A week and a half later, she had put together some form of a letter of forgiveness, and headed up to the Owlery. It was short, but Everly had to keep reminding herself that she didn't owe Hiraeth a reply at all, or anything, as hard as it was for her to admit. She stood in the entranceway of the Owlery, contemplating whether or not she should leave her letter or forget about Hiraeth entirely. Maybe it would be better if she did.Dear Hey Hiraeth,
It's been a while. I'm not trying to blame you for anything if it seems like that. I've never been the best at conveying my feelings through letters, nor have I been at writing in general. I guess I just really missed talking to you, and after a while, I got resentful. Whether I blamed myself or you more, I'm not sure.
I do miss you, though. It was nice, feeling like I had a friend, even if I didn't know who you were.
If you choose to reply to this, too. Either way, I'll still miss you.
