It was a cool, crisp morning and the air was slightly nippy as Olive walked out of her house and onto the bustling streets. She pulled her sweater more tightly around her arms as she came out into the cool air. The slight chill followed her around as she walked quickly across the street, heading purposefully in the direction of one of her favorite places to go.

Ilvermorny had been an amazing experience in the time in which she had been there, but it was nothing like being home. Her twin brother had come home with her from the school, but declined her invitation to accompany her to the cafe to which she was going now. She loved him to pieces, but sometimes he could be such a fun hater.

Olive supposed that she would just have to find someone to talk with while she was there. One plus about living in New York was that a lot of people were talkative. They weren't always friendly, but she could usually count on finding someone to talk to wherever she may be.

Rounding the corner, she spotted the familiar cafe. She walked over and into the building. Just a few moments later she was sitting down at a circular table in the back. She watched as people came and went, waiting to see if anyone would come over to where she sat alone.

To put it simply, Ivy loved New York. Most especially, she loved the people. She often thought they were her kind of people; they kept to themselves, making sure to appear busy at all times so no one would approach them. The people of the city were not talkative, but that's what she liked. The lack of communication meant that there were no awkward conversations, no small talk. What more, it was easy to tell the difference between a tourist and a local.

Ivy was a tourist herself, spending the beginning few weeks of the holidays with her parents in New York. She missed Hogwarts dearly, but she'd be back before she knew it, and she missed her parents even more when she was away. Presently, her mother and father were sleeping in at the hotel, and Ivy thought it was a perfect opportunity to explore the city for herself. She had come across a café, and it had lured her in with the sense of nostalgia mixed with the smell of coffee beans. It was a cosy establishment, and it was clear that the people who went there were locals at their go-to spot. Being quite the observer, Ivy quietly watched these people intently as they sipped on their morning coffee, unaware of her gaze. But there was someone that caught her eye. A girl, of a similar age to herself, sat at the back of the shop, watching people come and go just like she was. Something about the girl drew Ivy to her. Perhaps it was the way she looked around, with her gaze held high, unlike everyone else. Or perhaps it was because, to her at least, it looked as though the girl was searching for something more beyond the placid faces.

Before the girl can notice her, however, Ivy quickly averts her gaze and decides to order a drink. She doesn't take to coffee, but she may as well order something. Within a few minutes, a large, steaming latte sits before her, and Ivy approaches it with caution. It is the first time she has tried such a drink, and decides to spontaneously take a sip before backing down. That was a bad idea. the hot liquid slides down her throat in a slightly painful, yet sweetly delicious, way and she pierces her lips to avoid yelping.

"Merlin," she mutters to herself, not so quietly that other people can hear. It is a strange word, a muggle should think, to use, but she thinks nothing of it, and absent-mindedly blows gently on the coffee before taking another sip, alone amongst all the wandering faces.

As Olive sat quietly at her small table tucked back in the corner, she watched the flurry of people as they came and went. Most didn't stay for too long, only time enough to get their drinks and leave in a big rush. Others stayed for longer amounts of time, but after a bit, they too left. Olive simply watched all this and more happen as she sipped the drink before her.

There was certainly a lot of noise in and out of the cafe, and double the movement. There always seemed to be someone in a rush to go somewhere that would be of no consequence to them the next day. It greatly amused her to watch the passerby as she didn't think they knew what they looked like from another's eyes.

Another girl around her age came in and sat down at a small table across the way. Olive kept her eyes on the girl though. Something about her, something she couldn't quite put her finger on, intrigued her. She was uncertain as to what it may be however, because this girl seemed like any other that would come and go from the small cafe.

After a bit, she heard the girl mutter a word that was plenty known to her, she used it quite often. The word was one the muggle community would know of, but only the wizarding community would use it in the context that this girl had used it in. Olive studied the girl more closely now that she might be a fellow witch. There was seemingly nothing out of the ordinary with her, but perhaps she had a wand hidden in a pocket or some such item. Olive decided to walk over and strike up a conversation and see if the girl really was a witch, but casually just in case she turned out to be a muggle with a strange taste in phrases.

"Hello," she said, sitting across from the girl. "My name is Olive. I couldn't help but overhear you, you said Merlin I think? Quite an odd phrase for a muggle to use, wouldn't you think?" If the girl truly was nothing more than a muggle, then the use of the unfamiliar word would register as nonsense to her, but if she were a wizard she would be able to pick up on it quickly enough.
