A Sentimental Stow-Away PV Marshal

Saturday, April 9th, 2022
The Spring break was nearly upon them. The last of the quidditch and broom racing games were to be upon them in a matter of hours, but even the nerves of a new quidditch era couldn't erase the knowledge that in too few hours, students would be filing away towards Hogsmeade station ready to board the Hogwarts Express that would take them back home for a fortnight. For the first time since her arrival at Hogwarts, Evelynn would not be among their number.

Call it a petty grudge, but she had no desire to return home to the empty barn that would await her there. But that didn't mean remaining obstinately at the school didn't have its drawbacks. In a rare moment of sentimentality, she had taken the morning before the Quidditch game to reflect, penning a some of those thoughts to paper. And before she could change her mind, she had snuck into a certain individual's room and stashed the note wherever she could hastily hide it.

It was quiet this morning. Uncharacteristically so. I hadn't even realized that the sun had fully risen or that I had worked through a full two chapters and entirely missed breakfast in the Great Hall because you hadn't come bursting obnoxiously through the door this morning. I suppose that was just happenstance, of course. At the time of this letter's writing, I imagine you're likely to be recovering from the game against Slytherin today, and packing for the train first thing in the morning. And by the time you're reading this, I hope you already to have landed safely at home. Mayhaps it's been a few days now. Hopefully not much longer than that. I suspect your mother would have fished through your socks at some point, at the very least, and found this even if you yet had not. I'm not sure I enjoy the quiet as much as I used to, however. The crackling of the fire reminds me of twigs snapping underfoot; the stream of sand in the time-keepers, like the skittering of spiders across paved floors. It's been a while since I've noticed those. But I suppose I had best befriend them again since they are to keep me company for the next fortnight. I'm sure you noticed I wasn't aboard the train. I hope you can forgive me for failing to mention that I wouldn't be going home for the holidays. I was hesitant to bring it up; I had no wish to lay a shadow across your excitement for your reunion with your family. I hope they are well. Don't forget to study your charms while you're gone. We'll have much to refresh upon your return to the castle. And stay safe, please.
