"- and make sure to call - to write, I mean, every week, and make sure to tell us everything, and -"
Colin's mother rambled on, teary eyed, her hands on his shoulders as she looked down at him. Neither she nor Colin's father had ever considered sending him to a boarding school, so the notice that he had been accepted into one had been quite a shock - though not quite as shocking as the revelation that he was a wizard, that is.
His mother was apprehensive; Colin had heard her discussing frantically with his father that she didn't want to lose her little boy. Yet she knew that this School would be good for him; a place where he could excell.
That's what she hoped, anyway.

"- and make sure to tell us if you need anything, and we'll send it to you, and-"
Colin was indifferent to the whole experience, which even he recognised was odd. He scarcely remembered the past few weeks; learning he was a wizard, getting a plane to England so he could visit those bizzare shops, goblins running a bank, reading through spellbooks - it was all a blur. He knew that his current calm indifference was likely the product of shock. Once he actually managed to process everything, he would probably be left giddy with excitement - or terrified. But for now, he just stood in place, nodding along to his mother's instructions, before he finally interrupted her.
"Look, don't worry, I'll be fine. I've get to get on now, or I won't be able to find a seat."

His mother gave a short laugh, then sighed. She pulled him in for a hug, whispering "Be good," before finally letting go.

Colin, with a bit of difficulty, lifted his trunk and made his way onto the train. Upon seeing the interior he felt a sickening wave of dread wash over him - dozens of unfamilar students crammed into a tight walk way, or sitting in carriages together. He drew a breath, beginning to walk down the train, searching for an empty compartment.
After a few minutes, he managed to find one. Letting out a sigh of relief, for he had been dreading to have to ask with somebody else, he slid the door open. He set his trunk in, and closed the door behind him after entering.
He took a seat, and turned his head to the crowd of other parents and pupils on the platform, feeling the excitement gradually begin to bubble within him.

Elesarh hugged her mum tightly. The guard was blowing his whistle now, it was time to get on the train.
"Have a lovely year Elsa, and don't forget to write!"
"My name isn't Elsa, Mum." Elesarh said. "It's Elesarh. E-le-sar. Elesarh, not Elsa."
"Listen to your mother." said her father sternly. Elesarh rolled her eyes.
"Sorry. Elesarh." said her mum, making an apologetic face
"Bye Mum, Dad." said Elesarh, giving her dad a fleeting hug before picking up her cat and her trunk and turning to leave.
"Ele!" came an indignant voice. Elesarh felt a grin spread across her face as she dropped her things to pick her younger sister up. "I'll miss you Ele." whispered Skye.
"I know." said Elesarh. "I'll write every day." Skye grinned.
"I'll take your chocolate if you don't." Elesarh laughed as she gave her sister a final squeeze.
"I love you Skye."
"I love you too." Elesarh picked up her trunk again and turned towards the train. She turned once around to wave. The guard blew his whistle again, more urgently this time and she ran, hopping onto the train in a swift leap.

Students were hanging out the windows, waving to their parents. Elesarh joined them hanging out the window to kiss her mother one final time. "See you soon!" she yelled, as the train gave a great lurch and began to move out of the station.

Picking up her things for the third time she weaved her way down the train, searching for an empty compartment. She got to the final one, where only a boy was sitting there. She nervously knocked, sliding the door open.
"Umm...." she said. "Mind if I sit?"

As he slowly began to grow more excited regarding his future, Colin's focus on his present slowly began to slip. While his gaze had wandered over the crowd outside, searching for his mother, it had soon became unfocused as he wondered what awaited him at his new school. Due to this, he didn't notice the cabin door being opened.
Thus the question from the person in the doorway startled him quite a bit, causing him to turn his head. His posture quickly changed as he collected himself; he sat up straight, his movements a little more rigid as he forgot his excitement and receded into the anxious persona that he was rather accustomed to.

"Ah, yeah, go ahead." He muttered, nodding slightly. His eyes remained fixed on the other student for a moment; observing their relatively thin frame, their long ginger hair. His gaze was drawn to the scar on their chin for a moment, and curiosity caused his lips to part slightly, ready to ask a question that was likely too personal for two complete strangers.
After staring at the other for perhaps a second too long, he shifted his gaze back to the window, his face reddening as he was faintly reminded of the many times his mother had scolded him for staring at people. It's rude.

Ah, that's right, where were his manners? Discomfort be damned, he was going to a new school; starting over again, with new people. He was going to need to at least attempt to be nice. Besides, talking to just one person he didn't know couldn't be that hard.
"I'm Colin," He began, hesitating for a moment after."What's your name?"

"Elesarh." said Elesarh stiffly. She had caught the boy staring and waited for him to make some sort of comment on her ginger hair or her scar. Then she realised that the boy in front of her was a ginger as well. As a matter of fact, he looked quite like her, freckles and ginger hair. "Ummm......" she hesitated. "What year are you in?" she asked. The minute she asked she regretted saying it. "Never mind." she said, turning hastily away, about to leave the compartment when she stopped. That would look silly. Instead she carefully placed her pet cat Artemis onto the seat beside her as she began heaving her trunk up onto the luggage rack. Honestly, she was quite suprised her parents had let her buy a pet. They weren't exactly rolling in cash. Artemis let out a hiss of annoyance. Elesarh hid her smile from Colin by letting her hair fall in front of her face. When she had finally got her trunk up she collapsed into the seat next to Artemis and pulled a book from her rucksack, burying her face inside it, making sure she was sending a clear message of not wanting to interact. Social situations were so embarrasing.

Colin nodded, his face reddening a little more at Elesarh's stiff tone. Yeah, he'd probably annoyed them... Most people don't enjoy being ogled at. He muttered out "Sorry," raising his left hand to his lips before stopping himself - biting his nails was a habit which he really needed to stop. He quickly lowered his hand after, lowering his head slightly.
"What year are you in?"
He opened his mouth to answer, the realisation that it was a rather silly question only hitting him after the other turned away from him. He still answered, though; "I'm in First Year." he muttered, realising that Elesarh may be about to leave - to be honest, if he was in their place he would be doing the exact same thing, hence why he'd been so anxious to find an empty compartment. It was far easier than trying to join others.

He kept his head tilted away as they took a seat, resigning himself to the idea of sitting in silence for the entire train journey. He probably should have brought a book or something. His hand went to his pocket, checking for a phone that wasn't there, as he was bitterly reminded that he wouldn't get his back until he returned home for the holidays.

What did catch his attention, though, was Elesarh's cat. The colour drained from his face as it hissed. Normally animals didn't scare him too much, but there was just something about cat's that unsettled him.
"Is it..."
He stopped himself.
Is it dangerous? Aggressive? Yikes, what a bad way to start a conversation with somebody- insulting their pet? Seriously? Don't be stupid, it's just a cat. How dangerous can it be?
"I mean, uh - what's your cat called?" he corrected himself.

Elesarh smiled faintly at his question.
"Her name is Artemis." she said, running an absent minded hand through her cat's silky fur. "She's a beautiful thing. Pretty friendly. She's a real scaredy cat though." She chuckled lightly, then studied Colin closer, he looked pale and nervous. "Err...are you okay?" She bit her lip. "You.....You're not allergic to cats are you?"

Oh gods. Her face burned. If he was allergic to cats. She should've asked sooner! Oh no! It was like that time all over again when she gave her friend a strawberry sweet, not knowing they were allergic to strawberries!

She picked Artemis up. "I can lock her up for the journey, or find a new compartment. I'm so sorry!" Now she was babbling. "Sorry." she muttered, lowering her head so her hair swung in front of her eyes again. Boy was she glad for long hair at this moment. She was such a fool. "I....sorry." she said again, her face now positively scarlet (at least, she thought).

Elesarh itched the back of her neck for something to do, to break the awkward silence. She could feel her face burning and lowered her head so it was nearly touching Artemis' fur. Oh, but now she must look like a fool. She sat bolt upright and cleared her throat. "Sorry." she said again, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears. Calm and composed. she thought to herself. Calm and composed.

Colin was rather taken aback at Elesarh's suddenly outburst of bumbling apology. It took him a moment to realise that he was the cause - or at least, his reaction to the cat's presence was. He took a breath in an attempt to calm himself down, a little colour returning to his own face now. He remained silent as Elesarh continued, as he simply wasn't sure how to react.

He studied their movements with curiosity - lowering their head, scratching the back of their neck, their faces and ears going an unfortunate shade of red; It was all so...familiar.
He himself had acted the same way plenty of times; when embarrassed, or worried he'd done something to upset somebody. In the limited friend group he had previously been restricted to, he hadn't seen such reactions in other people. So as bizarre as it was, seeing the other anxious was a little comforting. He could empathise with her, at least.

But enough of that; Seeing her newly upright, slightly tense posture it was clear that Elesarh was embarrassed. He needed to make some attempt to alleviate that embarrassment. He smiled as they tucked their hair behind her ear, before beginning his condolences.
"Oh, it's nothing like that, don't worry. You don't need to apologise." He began, his words carefully chosen.
"I'm not allergic, I'm just... kind of scared of cats, I suppose. They make me a little, uh...uneasy.
Not to say that yours isn't nice, or anything, she looks lovely, I mean. She can stay out, it's fine, I-"

He was losing himself slightly, afraid of insulting the other.
Time to change the subject.
"Artemis...That's, like, a god, right?"
He asked, wracking his memory. "One of the Roman ones?"

It's pronounced "Shee", not "Sidge".

Elesarh smiled slightly at Colin. He was mumbling just like they had just done. When she heard his question they straightened up.
"Artemis is the Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, childbirth, vegeatation, chatisty and the moon." they corrected "Her Roman counterpart is Diana. Artemis is twin to Apollo who is the....." Elesarh trailed of, blushing again as they realised that they had been rambling. They scratched the back of their neck again. "Sorry." they said sheepishly. "I'm a bit of a mythology nerd." Elesarh looked away. Gods they were making a fool of themself. "But yeah. I named Arty after the Greek goddess. I'm into that sort of stuff, also it's a really pretty name." They studied Colin closer. He seemed......he seemed to get her. Most other people would have looked wierded out by now by her mumbling and bumbling. "I'm sorry you're scared of cats. Maybe Arty can teach you. She's a gently soul. Very friendly." Elesarh ran a gentle hand through their cat's fur. Some small hidden part of them.....hoped that maybe. Just maybe. Maybe Colin and them would be friends. or aquantinces. "So....ummm....do you have wizarding parents? Or are you Muggleborn." they were about to say 'like me' but remembered what the book they had briefly read in the bookshop told them. About pureblood ideals.

Colin nodded, faintly recognising some of the names mentioned. His knowledge of of mythology was mostly restricted to Irish folklore, though he had some faint memory of ancient Greek and Roman mythos due to a certain book series he had read when he was younger. "Yeah, it is a pretty name." He murmured, now observing the cat with perhaps a little less fear than before. Although he'd be lying if he said it didn't still make him feel a little uneasy.
"I'm sorry you're scared of cats. Maybe Arty can teach you. She's a gently soul. Very friendly."
"Well, maybe they could." He said, though he still kept a wary eye on the cat. Even if the animal was a 'gentle soul', it was still a cat - with those evil, beady eyes, those sharp claws, spitting up clumps of hair all over the place-
Stop being silly, he chided himself, turning to face the window for a moment. It's just a cat, it's not 'evil'.
"So....ummm....do you have wizarding parents? Or are you Muggleborn."
He paused for a moment upon hearing Elesarh's question. His brow furrowed; He had been fortunate enough this far to remain unaware of the ridiculous triviality that was the wizarding concept of Purity of Blood - Nor had he heard the term 'muggleborn' before.
He sat in silence, struggling to compute the question, his lips parting as he searched for words that refused to come. After a further moment of uncomfortable silence, he managed to mutter out "The second one, I think?", inferring the term may be the opposite of having magical parents.
Colin cleared his throat. It was better to just swallow his pride now and learn whatever the hell they were talking about meant now to avoid embarrassment in future. "Sorry, no, that's - What's a muggleborn?"
