Spring Races Broom Race Ravenclaw v Gryffindor

April 9, 2022
2:00 pm (1400)
Raining, cold heavy downpour all day
Isn't that how the saying goes: April showers bring May flowers. If so, the fields would be plush with blooms this spring. It had been raining for two straight days, a miserable and dreary day. The sort where tarps would prove inadequate, burdened by the weight of waters, the drooping structures had collapsed before the crowds could even arrive. The umbrella charm or actual umbrellas were a must on this particular day if spectators wanted to see the race first-hand and not listen to the second-hand account made by the victors or their friends.

This was also a fine opportunity for the other schools to scope out their Hogwarts competition. Yes, it was indeed likely that a member of the Champion's Team would come from this track. Even if not, they might be among the spectators. There was also other schools, other relationships to foster (or break) as their opportunities would be limited until summer holiday.

The Gryffindor Team was the first to come out, their team was stacked with upper classmen. They had a rare fifth year, @Xailah Alptraum. It was as if there was some nefarious force that was causing death, disease or destruction driving off the students after a few short years. Then there was @Hugh Lowe, former co-captain, recent cult-member who had recently given up his authority role on the racing team for reasons unspecified. The fact that he was still on the team has gotten the gossip-mongers talking, This was followed by @Nicholas McCowan a second year and present Captain of the team. He was young but he had an allegedly good head on his shoulders. @Levi Drakos was another second year, well-known or at least noticed, he had a penchant for attracting drama for whatever reason. Finally, @Della Barfield, a first year that was recently elevated to co-Captain. She was a bit young and was replacing an upper classmen, people had questions but as of yet nobody dared utter them.

Ravenclaw would join the other house in the rain. They also had a rare fifth year, @Bloom Silverton among their ranks. This was going to be her first race with them. This was followed by an accompaniment of first years including @Ari Gwild the co-captain of the house team. @Lin Evanvleck, @Clair Fernandez and @Judith Cohen. They had been through this before, they knew what was ahead of them and it was going to be dangerous. At the very least, winter was over but the chilly rains made this flight no more comfortable.

On the sidelines, @Aurora Ranvier would watch the race play out. There were some rumors swirling about the castle that there was something between the captain of the Ravenclaw team and the Captain of the Gryffindor Team. It was probably that kiss during Valentines Day, it was rather public and it was also very very noticeable. While many were here for the race, others were watching for the impending social disaster.

Clair was ready, her nerves were about as equal as last race, she knew what might happen, but she also knew that they HAD to win this race, if they lost again she'd have to be even better and win!
Of course Ravenclaw also was not a squad of first years now, this time they had a fifth year with them, Take that Lions!

Her wand was holstered to her arm, in a place she could grab it easy if she needed it, which she most likely would.
Her hair was pulled up so that it would stay out of her face and away from any grabby things if there was any on the course.
Getting on her broom she got ready to fly.

Judith was very excited about the race. She had been waiting for it for ages! Together with her team, she knew she would be making this game epic! For sure she had nerves, she always had nerves for everything, but she believed in herself, even tho if they wouldn't be wining, she knew she would do great things

She got onto her broom, holding it tight, while checking if her wand was in the right spot. And so she waited, looking at her team, ready for takeoff

This was it. Bloom was holding onto her Nimbus 1700 so very tightly. This was going to be nothing like Quidditch. There was a great chance of unknown in Broom Racing. Going from obstacle to obstacle and figuring out what to do from there. Bloom was pretty scared at what to expect as her first Broom Race. What was going to be on the track? In addition, she was the only fifth year while the rest were first years on her team. If she failed, how does that look?

There was so much to consider in one game. She looked over at her teammates, Clair and Judith, and gave them a small smile of "we got this!". But really it was more to convince herself than the young first year.

Bloom just knew that no matter what, she had to go out there and take on the unknown as a surprise. She took a deep breath, mantled her broom and got herself ready to fly.

Ari was nervous as usual. This race was going to be a challenge, same as the last. Hopefully this time, his team would prevail and win.

Instead of snow blanketing the grounds, there was rain falling from the skies. Thankfully, Ari had grabbed a black hoodie to wear, but not for the reasons of rain. He wore it to protect himself in case of injury as well as to hide the scars he obtained from the bundimun acid in the last race.

The memory of the pain came back like a ghost now and then. He remembered how he collapsed in the snow as he crossed the finish line, trying not to scream in pain. No one needed to see that. It was his fault he got them, so he'd keep this battle to himself.

He spun his Silver Arrow around at his side as he walked out to the starting line. He caught sight of Clair, Bloom, and Judith, and gave them all a handsome, reassuring smile and a thumbs up. The best way to handle this would be to relax and focus, so Ari focused his mind straight ahead.

Lin Evanvleck ✯ First Year
9th April 2021
In three months, Lin had not fully recovered from her last race. After being scratched to the bone, then covered in lime, then rained down with acid and losing the race, Lin thought about quitting Broom Racing. But hey, might as well keep going until the end of the year, she thought.
But now it was too late to back out. She was going to face the Gryffindors, and this time she wanted to win despite her nervousness. Lin took deep breaths to keep her hair blue, just like Ravenclaw.

Nicholas ran his hand down his face, the movement serving a twofold purpose, the rainwater that had built upon his face was cast off, and his sense of unease ever-so-slightly centred. The movement seemed rather pointless in the pursuit of that first reason, for the continuing downpour served to only further drench him. It was a miserable day to fly, and there was absolutely no doubt that he'd find his eyes stinging the second he took off. But it wasn't the worst thing that could happen on a race track, and he was thankful for that at least.

As he came out with his team, the captain was almost too aware of the slight shift in dynamics that had overtaken the locker room. Their roster remained unchanged, the same five lions who'd bested Slytherin were to take to the sky once more. But the hierarchy had shifted, ever so slightly. Hugh was no longer co-captain, that role taken by the youngest member of their team, the girl who had shared honours with Nicholas when they'd crossed the finish line first in the last race.

"Ready, skipper?" He asked Della, the put upon joyousness a clear attempt to calm not only himself but the younger captain.

He had no idea what to say to Hugh. The part-giant had been instrumental in much of the building of the team, but the circumstances surrounding his replacement weren't entirely known to Nicholas That was likely for the best, there was no need to worry about such trifles. As for the pair of metamorphagi, Xailah and Levi, they at least remained consistent in their peculiarity. She was intimidating in her aloofness, he was an absolute magnet for drama. Not that Nicholas seemed to be much better in that regard. The team was the same, yet different.

But as the Northern Irish lad mounted his broom, those concerns faded away, and even the rain seemed to disappear into the background. There was a race to win, that was all, no need to worry about any other complexities. Just fly straight and true.

Cat's Grace || Blindvision
Spring had this conventional image of being the bright, beautiful season- light, and bustling with new life- with flowers blooming in masses, and birds singing to their brand new babies. That was what people thought of when spring was mentioned. It was what the season had been illustrated as since... forever probably. It was so easy to be distracted by the promised colorful ideal; that sometimes other aspects to spring were often forgotten. As the popular rhyme goes: April showers bring May flowers. Springtide wasn't always sunny and warm. With color always came some grey. In short, the rain had been unexpected.

But, it was not entirely unwelcome. Rain was less than ideal weather to fly in for numerous reasons, this was true. Moisture was the enemy for racers and brooms alike. A slick broom made for an inevitable fall. Water on a poorly maintained broom, was death for the wood. For a prepared flyer, rain was hardly a thing to worry about. In fact, unless you were a bee- or some other small, flying creatures of a similar sort- a little rainy weather was practically harmless.

Xailah had made sure to wax, and charm her broom with a liquid repelling spell, before leaving the Gryffindor locker room. They were precautionary measures- less about providing an advantage, and more about keeping her beloved mount maintained, and water-free. A strong broom could carry a swift racer. Xailah exited the shelter with her teammates, but paused her leave before she could be fully exposed to the sky water. She curved her wand upwards; the shaft carving the shape of an umbrellas handle, in the air. "Pluvia Velo" She commanded. From her wandtip, spouted an unseen canopy. She and DeSoto could stay a bit drier- at least until they got to the starting line. Mounting her broom, Xailah would hover after her pride.

To the darkling girl, the rain was seen as a blessing- a humble sign of future success. This was the day of the lions. One might have proposed the contrary, considering the popular stereotype of cats hating water- but sometimes, cats could certainly surprise. They knew how to work their surroundings, and they knew they were hardest to catch when wet. The rain was leverage: when showed no fear, it was your friend; a very useful tool- especially towards those that regarded downpours with distraught.

Upon reaching the starting point, Xailah extended a cupped hand out from underneath the lip of her invisible umbrella, in a curious, accepting gesture. The rain graced her splayed paw with it's cool touch. Droplets ran through her fingers, rolling off of the leather that embraced her slender hands. She looked to her housemates, her golden gaze dancing from head to head. Her sights locked onto Hugh and Della- former and current co-captains. Xailah couldn't figure out why Hugh stepped down, and Della stepped up. But she was interested in where this change would lead the both of them. Successful places surely- the part-giant and snowy-furred cub were absolutely brimming with potential.

Xailah did not observe her racers for very long. Her eyes lingered only long enough for each to know that she was aware of their existence. Eventually she would set her attention forward, squinting through the pummeling rain, to outline the beginning of the stretching track before her. The lioness tilted her head up slightly, a wisp of a smile slipping across her lips. Idly she purred, her voice lilting on a warm note: "It is a lovely day for a race."

Della arrived at the racing pitch in different humor than she had for the first race. There she had been trembling, weak-kneed, and mentally unprepared. She had expected to fall off her broom in the first round—especially since she joined the team at the last minute.

This time, there had been another last-minute change—she had been elevated to co-captain. At the beginning of the last match, she never expected to cross the finish line first, much less be leading the team. But all that had come to fruition. And most surprising of all, Della felt confident—maybe for her first time at Hogwarts, she felt truly confident.

She knew that it might seem odd to have a first-year captain, but it was definitely not unheard of. And her fellow lions seemed more than accepting—and she would not let them down.

Della came to stand with her teammates. She may have not needed her umbrella standing under the shadow of Hugh; she looked at the largest lion—he had stepped down as co-captain after an ecstatic win. Della didn't know why, but she figured it had nothing to do with the team since he was still here. Xailah and Levi were still a bit of mystery to her off their brooms, but she trusted them to have her back. She gave all three of them a nod, hoping they were as optimistic as she was.

And her fellow captain, Nick, who had shared the finish line with her—well she wanted to think they had maybe a friendship brewing, but she still felt a pang in her foot when she remembered his jealous not-girlfriend/girlfriend. She really hoped they had both worked that all out by now, and Della would not have to worry about the wrath of a certain Ravenclaw captain when trying to platonically converse with her teammate.

Shaking all that out of her mind, she answered Nick with a cheery smile and exaggerated salute, "Aye, aye, Captain!"

Hmm, yes. The rain. Hugh felt the bear inside him lift his head to the sky and sniff the air. A lone animal defending his hill, making his stand. With a full head of hair and beard, the part-giant would look even more menacing than before. As the rest of his team came pouring in along with the rain, Hugh would look past his shoulder and nod at each one of them. The looks he got were riddled with questions. Or rather, one particular question. It occurred to Hugh, he hadn't explained him stepping down. Not even to Nicholas, his captain and now former partner-in-crime.

It wasn't a matter of choice, more so an expression of duty. He only ever accepted the role of co-captain in a time of need for the team. Nicholas was new, and Pendrast had asked her largest lion to watch his back. Hugh theorized his former stint as a prefect gave some credit to his name, despite what any pureblood would call: His handicap. When it became clear the youngest member on their team had both talent and interest, it seemed like the most logical thing to do. To take a step aside.

His feet stomped in the mud, shifting his weight to the other leg. "I agree." Hugh said to Xailah and smiled. "Just waiting for the thunder. I do love a good storm." Towering above the rest of them, anyone might have believed the lightning would strike him there and then. "Della." He called out to the bright haired girl. "You'll do fine. But keep Captain Mop from doing anything stupid." A grin cut open the bush around his mouth. "Soon we'll hear him crowing through the forest again." His eyes shifted to Nicholas, whom he offered a wink. There was a brief moment where he wondered if the boy felt any disappointment towards him. While it wouldn't have ultimately mattered to Hugh, it made him curious to what was going on in the other's head.

How much of that bravado had stuck around after the first match. Or had it made room for something greater? Perhaps it was too soon to say. Hugh straightened his shoulders and took a deep breath. The bear took his stance. "Let's ride for glory!"
