A wand full of surprises
29 Août 2021
Finally, after a week of asking, begging, puppy dog eyes, my parents had finally agreed to let me go with my godmother to buy my supplies for Hogwarts.
So here I am, out in the cold, listening to my dearest godmother repeat the safety instructions.
- Rule number 1?
- Always follow you
-Rule number 2?
- Never let hand or move away from you.
-Rule number 3?
- I must listen to you and do everything you say
-Rule number 4?
- Never talk or follow strangers
Even if I wanted to, how could I do it since I must don't let your hand
-Well, we can go, ready?!
- Yes , I say in a breath. I'm ready to begin my Hogwarts adventure.
My godmother suggests I start with Ollivanders, just to get my wand back. I nod apprehensively, since the manifestation of my powers at age , I haven't touched magic other than through books. This would be my first interaction with the magical world in a long time. I am both eager and worried, what will happen. What would my wand be? Given my luck, the outcome might be surprising.
We arrive in front of the store which is full of people, there is a huge line in front of the store. I am not the only one excited at the idea to find his wand.
- I think we're going to go back godmother.
-Don't worry, Elizabeth Rosenberg never waits in line, she said, winking at me.
She turned to the crowd and explained in a long tirade that she had come to take her order at Ollivander's and couldn't possibly leave her young godson on the sidewalk.
I felt the eyes turn to me and my cheeks flushed. I had a crazy urge to disappear at that moment. The people finally moved aside while grunted, letting us pass. My aunt thanked them and went into the store, pulling me by the arm. Ollivander was busy with a customer when we arrived, and my Godmother explained that she had come to take his order. The sorcerer's gaze went from me to my aunt. He sighed and asked me to go wait for him in the back while he finished. I agree, uncomfortable, happy to leave the room; but I ended up hitting my head against the door. It's always the same! I am tired of crushing my face. My godmother scolds me, asking me to look ahead next time. I nod with a sigh before rushing into the room. It's amazing. The room is very large and filled with shelves on which wand of all kinds are stored, a smell of dust and fresh wood floating in the air.
<<How does he know each wand and where it is located ? >>
I muttered to myself. I reached out to touch one of them; at the same time a voice thundered behind me: <<I'd be glad if you didn't touch, wand are not toys.>>. I gasped and turned around to see a Mister Ollivander looking at me with an angry eye.
<<I-I A-Apol-lo-gise, I-I d-don't w-want, W-well ,I'm so-rry>, I stammered as an excuse.
<<Let's not talk about it anymore, come closer, will you>>he answered me, impassive.
I approached while shaking and he asked me to reach out, then took my measurements.
<< Now look at me... Well….., yes I see. >>
He turned to search through the wands and came back to me.
<<26.7cm made of chestnut wood and dragon heartstrings>>
I timidly reach for the wand and drop it. I apologized, but Mr. Ollivander urge me to take a deep breath and wave the wand. I did it , but nothing happened.
<<Hum..No this one doesn't fit>>
He back to his wands again.
<<Try this one, 20.6 cm made of hornbeam wood and phoenix feather>>
I took the wand more carefully this time; again nothing happened.
<<No, no, it looks like you're a tough case, but rest assured, we'll get there >>
At the time, I believed him but 20 minutes later I still don't have my wand. I am on the verge of tears. Ollivander continue to search relentlessly.
<<Don't despair, everyone finds their wand Ah!>>
He triumphantly turn to me.
<< I think this one will fit perfectly. 28.5cm made of chestnut wood and unicorn hair. bendy, attract to naturally lucky wizards.>> Lucky? The last adjective that can be used to describe me is lucky.
<<I think I should try another one, luck you see, isn't really my thing>>
<<wands are full of surprises, know this young man >>
Rather than a surprise, it would be a miracle though. Me? Lucky??I grabbed the wand firmly and like the other times waved it gently. I felt an energy run through my body to my arm, and I saw the tip of the wand sparkle.
<< Isn't that what I said, it's perfect, Follow me, we go back to your godmother. >>
I followed him without a word,astounded.
So luck is all about hitting yourself all the time and making a fool of yourself each seconds. I don't want to know what bad luck is thus. Lost in my thoughts, I hit my head on the wall again. I heard my godmother sigh in the distance. She paid for the wand and thanked Ollivanders. I said goodbye to the sorcerer, who smiled back at me. My godmother urge me to hurry up, we had other supplies to pick up. Who knows what other surprises this new school year has in store for me.
