Closed Song of the Sirens

Lonely. That's what Vivian was feeling. The young Ravenclaw had wandered down to the Great Lake somehow in search of something to do. She had done some of her homework and was NOT in the current mood to finish the rest. She would rather spend some time down by the water, doing what she wasn't sure. Her thoughts were swirling around in her head slowly, as they had died down in the past hour. She was currently walking down the lush, green grass, treading towards the Great Lake. The grass smelled of dew, and the sun was currently taking a nap behind the clouds, not wanting to shine anymore.

She finally reached the edge of the water, her face solemn as she came to a halt, staring a tthe crystal clear water. She sat down on the ground, placing her hands onto the dirt and soil. She sighed and tilted her head up, staring at the clouds. It was exceptionally quiet, with the occasional shout or laugh. She could see students walking in groups or pairs, chattering happily.

Vivian had no one. Sure she made friends, but those were just, friends. Not real friends. At least, right now they weren't. They would grow closer together of course, but right now, Vivian was as alone as she had been after Ophelia had died..

She remembered that day. Ophelia was telling her about Sirens, the pretty mermaids that looked innocent at first, but actually hypnotized you with their song and killed you. Ophelia had sung a song for her, a song her mother had taught her. Vivian had listened in awe, not knowing that was the last time she would ever hear Ophelia's singing.

Vivian was unsure when she had begun to sing, but she found herself unable to stop once she opened her mouth. That song brought back so many memories, each tugging at her heartstrings. The pain was clenching her heart, squeezing tighter as Vivian sung the same melody her friend had taught her.

Hear my voice beneath the sea
Sleeping now so peacefully
At the bottom of the sea
Sleep for all eternity

Flashes of Ophelia and Vivian running around in the garden playing with that ball Vivian's mind, the laughing and giggling children playing with Mary Jane. The ball went soaring into the yard of that house. Ophelia went running after it.

Sailors live so restlessly
Come with me, sleep peacefully
Listen to this siren's song
Worry not for nothing's wrong

Her mother, comforting her, assuring Vivian that Ophelia was just playing another game of hide and seek when the search for her in the abandoned house was unsuccessful. It had been three hours.

Let my voice lead you this way
I will not lead you astray
Trust me as we reach the side
Jumping out where men have died

Vivian breaks away from her mother, dashing towards the house, being chased after by the search party and her frantic parents, and bursting into the old house.

Hear my voice beneath the sea
Sleeping now so peacefully
At the bottom of the sea
Sleep for all eternity

Vivian, screaming at the top of her lungs, calling for Ophelia as she searched each room of the house, checking closets, cupboards, any place where friends might have hidden.

Let the ocean fill your lungs
Struggle not, soon peace will come
Taking in your final breath
Sink down to the ocean's depths

Vivian, finding a small door in the storage room, slamming herself against it, crying at this point. Ophelia! This isn't funny! Open the door! She finally managed to break it open.

"I wish I could always be
In the ocean's arms, you see"
He who'd wanted nothing more
Sleeps now at the ocean floor

O-Ophelia? Motionless. Pale. Dead eyes. Vivian had discovered the cold body of her dearest friend. OPHELIA!

Ocean was your lover's name
You had loved her all the same
Now you'll always be together
Sirens are so very clever

Parents bursting into the room, stopping abruptly when they saw their little girl crouched over something, sobbing violently. Inching forward, gasping.

Hear my voice beneath the sea
Sleeping now so peacefully
At the bottom of the sea
Sleep for all eternity

Vivian screamed, kicking, crying as she was picked up and carried away by her parents, watching her friend be placed onto a stretcher and get carried away too. OPHELIA! WAKE UP! WAKE UP!

Vivian's eyes were shut tightly as she sang louder, her voice straining, not from the singing, but from the pain. Vivian curled up into a ball when the song was over, her head tucked into her knees, crying quietly as her screams flooded her mind. Ophelia. Ophelia. Ophelia. She was the only thing on her mind, she couldn't get her out. It was like her death had haunted her ever since that day, hanging over her head like a cloud.

Come back to me. Please. Vivian thought helplessly, as she stopped crying. She flopped onto the grass, lying there pathetically. If only her parents could see her now. Ashamed is what they would feel. Ashamed their daughter was crying over something that happened so long ago.

If only Vivian knew that wasn't the case. But of course, she didn't. She felt helpless. Alone. No one there to rub her back or hug her, no one to talk to, no one's shoulder to cry on.

Vivian

was

alone.

When classes are going, Harmonia finds her time enjoyable, she gets to learn and practice magic, as best she could. But when it she doesn't have class, a childhood of isolation has taken its toll. It was hard for her to connect with people, and it most likely because she doesn't think she can.

She hid in the forest near the Great Lake, sitting against a tree, just watching the forest. It was peaceful, beautiful, and full of life, they may have been mostly insects, birds, or squirrels, but it was better then she had. She didn't have a place like this in Russia, just snow and rocks, so she would play. Be it her violin or piano, when she played all the loneliness, sadness, and doubt go away.

She tilted her head as she started to hear.... singing. She stood up and started to follow the voice, slowly weaving around trees and stepping over fallen branches. It was almost like a trance, not that the singing had that power, but her curiosity and familar tone in the singer's voice.

When she finally broke through the tree line, she found a girl near the lake. Why does she know how the girl felt? She's never heard this song, let alone sing it. As she got closer she recognized it was Vivian Crowell, from the first night. The doubt in her mind now race to her now. She didn't want to disturb her, but as she tries slowly to step away, a twig snaps loudly.

Vivian thought her day couldn't get any worse. She was curled up into a tight ball near the Great Lake, tears streaming down her face, her brain all jumbled and messed up. The usual annoying and lingering thoughts that floated around her mind had formed into a giant mass of venom, hissing and spitting at Vivian, who cowered under it.
If only you had stopped Ophelia from going inside, then maybe she would have been alive today. Her family probably hates you. Scratch that, they DEFINITELY hate you.
You are so worthless and pathetic. Your parents raised you to be strong and independent. If only they could look at you now. Pity and shame are what they'd feel.
Honestly, I can't believe anyone can STAND to be around you. You are so sensitive, crying over something that happened years ago. get over it already you crybaby.
Crack. Vivian snapped her head up, her face stricken with horror and dried tears plastered on her cheeks. A girl was standing near the edge of the woods, looking surprised, scared, and concerned all in one. Vivian sniffed and abruptly started brushing her misshapen hair out of her face, wiping her tears on her sleeve. The thundercloud of thoughts had been swept away, now replaced with fear.
Great, now someone found you crying. Way to make a fool of yourself, Vivian.
Almost all of the thoughts were gone. Vivian fixed her pants, smoothing out the wrinkles before standing up, her chin tilted upward slightly as she recognized the girl. Harmonia.

She winced. One of the first people she had met, and they already found her crying. Off to a fantastic start, aren't you Vivian. She let out a small noise from her throat, an attempt at clearing it, but instead, it came out as a whimper. She winced again.

"Er- hello Harmonia." She nodded at the girl awkwardly, not sure what else to do. "I was sitting by the lake, enjoying the scenery. And before you ask, yes that was me singing. I know I don't have a good singing voice, so please ignore that." Vivian spoke quickly as if every word that came tumbling out of her mouth plagued her and those around her.

She shuffled her feet, staring at her shoes, silence hanging in the air. "Please don't tell- actually never mind." She cut off whatever she was trying to say, and went back to staring at her shoes.

Harmonia felt horrible walking in on Vivian at this moment, it was clear she was like her." No...no Vivian, I thought it was beautiful." she replied quickly, Vivian was hurt emotionally, but she wasn't close enough for her to be of any help.

" I was... I wasn't... I can hear it. The pain in your voice." she held her warm smile despite wanting to run,but she couldn't they may be only housemates that just met, she couldn't just leave her."Its the pain of loneliness" She said, taking hesitant steps towards the lake.

" You don't have to tell me whats wrong... You dont have to tell me what has caused your pain. You don't even have to speak to me." She stated, that was her personal business, she had a right to privacy, she now stood only a few feet from eachother.

" But if you don't mind... I could sit here with you, but if you don't want to I can find somewhere else to go." she hoped that Vivian won't push her away, she would seriously think about if the roles were reversed. But a lonely person only wants one think... to have someone that cares about them.

Vivian couldn't believe a single word she was hearing. This must be a dream. No, it's not a dream, it's a nightmare. Harmonia thought she was weak. Helpless. Lonely. She couldn't be like this, not in front of her, not in front of anyone.

"No..no Vivian, I thought it was beautiful." was Harmonia's response to her singing. Vivian squeezed her eyes tightly shut and shook her head, her neck stiff. Adelaine and Eden had made fun of her voice for years, saying she sounded like a dying goose whenever she sang.

Even worse, Harmonia said she could hear the pain in her voice, the pain of loneliness. Harmonia took a few steps forward, and Vivian had the sudden urge to run away, jump into the lake, hide, anything other than this.

" You don't have to tell me what's wrong... You don't have to tell me what has caused your pain. You don't even have to speak to me." Oh no no no, Vivian knew where this was going. Harmonia would act all nice, be her "friend" and then spill her secrets to everyone. Vivian gingerly took a few steps back, hesitant. She looked behind her, thinking about how long it would take her to. run back to the castle and hide from the world.

"But if you don't mind..I could sit here with you, but if you don't want to I can go somewhere else." Vivian whipped her head back around and froze. Dead silence hung in the air for a few moments. No, wake up. This is a dream. She wouldn't actually ask you that..would she?

"You..you would do that?" Vivian whispered, still not buying a single word. Eden had said that to her, promising that he would be by her side, then proceeded to tell everyone that she was..something.

Vivian crouched down and sat on the grass again, still a few meters away from Harmonia. "I- very well, you can..sit with me." She looked away from Harmonia, staring at the water. Hopefully, she wouldn't ask questions.

Sitting with @Vivian Crowell.
Harmonia had her questions, but she knew it wouldn't do any good to ask, Vivian is on an edge. If she steps out of line Vivian will shut Harmonia out altogether." Like I said...." she started softly taking a seat where she stood, not to trespass into Vivian's personal space." You don't have to say anything... I can just talk." she finished looking at the lake.

What she was about to tell her was something that no one really knew, some knew she was from Russia but were English and that she was pureblood. No one knew how lonely she lived. Vivian needs someone she could trust, and so Harmonia will trust her with something. " I'm not from Europe,
despite my accent, I was born in Russia and lived there until last year moving here to attend Hogwarts. I like it here its prettier. I think my family was afraid of..."
she trailed off, was it still taboo to say Voldemort despite his defeat years ago.

" I believe my they were afraid of Voldemort.... they left during the 90s, probably before his return. I lived in a manor hidden in the mountains. I didn't really like it there, just snow and rocks. My parents only did whatever I asked so I would be out of the way. The staff... they didn't want to get to know me... and the purebloods in Russia are worst then here." she said remember all the gatherings she's been to.

She hide her face from view looking in the direction of Russia." It was lonely, I don't have any brothers or sisters, it was only myself, no on to talk to, to play with..." she swallowed the lump in her throat. All she wanted was friends.

"I believe in the pursuit of your own happiness, so long as it doesn't cost others."

┌────────────────────────── ∘°❉°∘ ──────────────────────────┐

Vivian listened in silence as Harmonia explained her life before coming to Hogwarts, mentioning how she disliked living in Russia, not having any friends or siblings to play with, being quite alone.

Vivian surprisingly found herself able to relate to that, even if it wasn't ever since she was born. She did have Ophelia and Mary Jane for a while, but then they split apart, so it was just Vivian to keep, well, Vivian company. Vivian knew how disconnected and lonely one can become after not having friends for years, she had lived the whole experience.

She tilted her head towards Harmonia, listening intently, nodding at some parts of her speech. This was all too familiar. She abruptly turned towards Harmonia and gazed at her. Realizing she was probably being very intimidating with her stare and making her friend uncomfortable, she looked away.

"Well, I suppose we can suffer together then." Vivian glanced at Harmonia before looking back to the trees. "I was also quite lonely after..Ophelia died."

Vivian took a deep breath, as there was no turning back now. She knew if she mentioned Ophelia, Harmonia would ask who she was, and then she would explain her entire sob story to her.

"If you wondering, Ophelia was my friend. Ophelia Viotto was her full name. She was of a pureblood family, like mine, only more well-known. Her parents were a very important part of the Ministry, I can't recall which part though." She paused, the silence in the air making her gulp before starting again. "She lived in the same neighborhood as me, our gigantic manor next to theirs. Mary Jane lived in the neighborhood over, she was a Squib, but blood status didn't matter to us. We all hit it right off the bat at a young age, around 7 or 8, and were the closest of friends."

"I think it was around 4 summers ago when it happened. I never forgot, and never will forget that day. We were playing in my garden with a ball. A giant, red, shiny ball. Ophelia kicked it too high..and it went sailing into that house."

"The house was abandoned. Ophelia, being the bravest out of all of us and wanting to be a hero, ran inside the house, promising to be back in no less than 2 minutes."

Vivian's mind suddenly swirled back to that day. Mary Jane was anxiously checking her watch repeatedly, before finally spinning around and booking it back to the house, screaming for her mother. Vivian had stared at the house, fists clenched, as if she could force Ophelia out of it by sheer will.

"Three hours." She whispered after a long period of silence. "That's how long the search party was looking. Three, long, agonizing hours. I was writhing and fidgeting while my mother held my hand, stroking it gently, assuring me she would be back soon."

"I couldn't stop what occurred next. I thought Ophelia was joking with me, playing hide and seek. A never-ending game of hiding and seek. I wanted to find her. I broke away from my mother and bolted towards the house, my parents and the search party chasing after me, telling me to stop. I didn't listen. I should have."

Tears were silently rolling down her cheek again, but she furiously wiped them away and continued. "I found her. In a tiny cupboard-like room tucked away in the storage room. The house was crumbling, the roof had caved in years ago, so the ball had sailed into the tiny little area. Ophelia must have crawled inside to get the ball but got stuck. Rattled the door, screamed for help, before the walls caved in on her."

"She was cold. Limp. Pale. She looked scary. I couldn't stop crying. I was hunched over her, sobbing into her shoulder. I would never get to see her pretty smile, her kind words, I would never get to step on the Hogwarts Express with her, never go to classes with her, never graduate with her, never be in her life anymore. And she wouldn't be in mine."

Vivian sighed and brushed the final teardrops away, smoothing out her messy hair and standing up. "Thank you, Harmonia, for listening." She checked her vintage watch and was mildly surprised to see that it had been quite a while. "I am afraid I must leave. I have lots of homework to do, but I am sure I'll see you later." She smiled sadly at Harmonia and started the way back up to the castle.
