For Christmas, Everly had gotten a new chess set. She wasn't exactly sure why, but it was a present nonetheless, so she'd hugged her parents and the board eagerly. Now, though, she wasn't exactly sure what to do with it. Everly was definitely far from good at chess, though that was probably because she was very busy at the moment (correction: didn't play at all). Chess hadn't been one of her top priorities, though she still liked to brag that she could beat her father, who played often (correction: never). Still, though, it was among her goals to one day finally beat Adeline in chess.
Goals also came with a very unfriendly activity: practice. If Everly wanted to become a chess master by summer break, she needed to at least play a little bit.
That was the tricky part. Everly didn't exactly know who to ask. She wasn't exactly sure which of her friends were avid chess players (it had never came up in conversation, okay), and she wasn't really about to ask, for the sake of her ego. Everly figured that it would be totally a-okay to find someone random, assume they were the worst at chess, beat them, and magically be ready to win her game at home.
That was how Everly had ended up in the Great Hall, setting up her chessboard. It was a rather new one, as she hadn't used it that much (correction: at all). Tzahala was curled up on top of it, and she shooed the cat away to place down the pieces.
Rook, knight, bishop, queen... queen?
Everly paused, squinting at the board as she scoured her brain for any memory of what came next.
Aha! King, queen, bishop, knight, rook. And then all the pawns.
After finishing with the white side, Everly moved on to place all of the black pieces in their designated spot.
Rook, knight, bishop, king, queen, bishop, knight, rook.
Satisfied with herself, Everly plopped down behind the black pieces, waiting for an opponent to spawn out of no where.
Your move.
