a train ride to a new life
Nyx Eros Dove was 11 years old and firmly set on not sitting properly. Ever. Besides, who said there was a proper way to sit. And who gave them the right to decide it. There were an infinite amount of ways to sit and Nyx was determined to use every single one that was not considered proper. Of course, this decision was likely to be forgotten in a few days but that wouldn’t stop Nyx from having fun.nyx eros dove; book 2, chapter 1: all good things come in threes, beginings included: a train ride to a new life
And so, instead of sitting like a normal person, the moment Nyx had said their goodbyes, found an empty room, and put away their trunk they sat down upside down. Their back was against the seat—the part where ones rear end usually belonged— and their legs were straight up against the wall. Well, not quite straight, their legs were actually rather bent but honestly who cared? Their shoulders and above were hanging off the seat as they stared at the ceiling with a small smile combined with a contemplative expression. Their short hair, which was a light brown that looked like it had been dyed an orange-ish pink quite a few months ago and had since faded, was hanging loosely with a few strands covering their eyes. With a soft breath, those few strands joined the rests off of their face.
On the seat beside Nyx laid a pale, purple-ish blue journal labeled “nyx eros dove; book 2”. It was open to the third page, the first two having been left empty. A single sentence was on it, a title: a train ride to a new life. This was, of course, the first chapter to the new book of their life. That new book being Hogwarts! They wanted to document every important and not-so-important thing that happened. They would do it once a month, or maybe once a week, but certainly not every day because they likely would get tired of that rather quickly. They wanted to log everything for various reasons, several of which they could not remember at the moment. Perhaps they could log their reasons for it as well? That would likely help them remember.
Nyx considered the benefits of journaling about things that were not their day to day life, such as why they were logging things, their favourite colour, every person they met at Hogwarts or perhaps just their friends, the various flavours of soup they might eat at the school, and other important things. All of this, while staring at the ceiling and not moving from their rather awkward position.

Of all the things Danaë Corentin-Devereux had expected of the Hogwarts Express, coming into a train car with a person sitting upside down was not one of them. And quite honestly, she didn't see what happened to be so exciting about a maroon ceiling.
She had said goodbye to her dad's, kissed her baby cousin on the forehead, and promptly rushed onto the train. And for what? Because for the last, what, 30 minutes of this impossibly large train, she had been passing through utterly full train cars (honestly; she didn't know why she was surprised, considering the sheer amount of students that attended Hogwarts).
And yet, as Danaë pushed open the door to the final train car that she was willing to pass through, the bright chatter of sixth years echoing behind her, dragging her trunk behind her, it was only then that she realized the train was practically empty.... except for the, topic at hand.
Faded peach color hair that melded into a soft brown spread across the velveteen chairs, legs resting next to the window where nothing more than the occasional tree dotted the Scottish moors that they were passing through. But at this point, Danaë couldn't care less, and her arms were throbbing. So she just pushed her trunk where it was supposed to be, and took a deep breath.
"Mind if I sit here?" the girl asked, already sliding into the opposite seat, leaning her head against the window, and pulling out a sketchbook, already prepared to spend the next couple of hours doing absolutely nothing of anything substancial.
"Do I dare disturb the universe? In a minute, there is time. For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse."

All thoughts of journaling slipped from their mind as they heard somebody enter the room. They slowly tilted their head towards Danaë and offered her a small, casual smile. As if they already knew her well enough. And perhaps they did. While they didn’t know certain things about her such as her name, they could tell she looked close enough to their age—closer than nearly everyone they’d spent significant time with before this moment— and evidently she went to Hogwarts. It wasn’t as if they needed to know more about her in this moment. So yes, they knew her well enough.Interacting with @Danaë Corentin-Devereux
Nyx shifted a bit. “I don’t mind if you sit here at all,” Then, as if only just that moment realizing how they were sitting, Nyx turned to sit properly. They nearly slipped off the seat, moving their legs too quickly and were about to roll off before they managed to sit up properly.
They used their hands to steady themself then turned back to Danaë. They offered a handshake paired with a slightly more humorous smile. Their hair was hanging in their face, making it a bit difficult to see clearly but they did not bother to move it out of the way. “I’m Nyx Eros Dove, you may call me by either my first or middle name as you so wish and may refer to me using any pronouns. This is my first year at Hogwarts. And you?”

A slow smirk making its way onto Danaë's face, all ideas of sketching(as if she was going to in the first place) dropped out of her head. At least she had chosen a car with a person in the same year, hopefully. They looked close enough to her age, which later was proven after Nyx spoke.
Nodding her head briefly, she adjusted her posture as the girl started to talk, listening to their names and letting out a short laugh at their hilariously awkward position on the seat.
Shaking their head to get a strand of hair out of her eyes, she reached across the table and shook Nyx's hand. "Danaë. I mean, you can call me Danaë, or Dev, honestly you can choose."
Letting out a mirthless laugh and bobbing her head, "Currently she/her pronouns, and um- I'm a first year"
Changing her facial expression to something more amused, they let Nyx take back control of the conversation, focusing on the creaking of the old train beneath them, and the occasional whistle.
Tapping her toe on the ground to a beat she didn't recognize. She didn't even know what she was waiting for, but it was something.

“It’s nice to meet you, Danaë. Are you looking forward to the school year? I certainly am. I have never been to a school myself, let alone one such as Hogwarts,” Nyx ran a hand through their hair, honey brown eyes shining with curiosity. What was this girl like? What kind of person was she? Perhaps a potential friend? Or a life long nemesis? Oooh, that would be interesting.Interacting with @Danaë Corentin-Deveruex
The extent of their interaction with other children was was their siblings who were rather young and a handful of encounters with odd muggles in the town they lived near. And did either of those truly count? Their siblings practically didn’t count having been with them all their life. They were used to them and knew them as well as a person could. And the muggle children. Well, Nyx could not relate to them. Not a bit. The closest thing those people had to magic was folklore and myths, which while interesting just was not the same. How could Nyx count interaction with children who could not understand something so fundamental to their life as true social interaction? And oh, they’d been going on a bit of a mental ramble. How embarrassing. Or it would be if anyone was reading their thoughts at the moment and Nyx actually cared.
The point was, this was practically the first real social interaction Nyx had ever had with anyone even close to their age. Of course they were curious. Without giving Danaë more than a second to respond, they continued. “What subject are you most interested in? Personally, I am rather curious about potions and herbology. My family has a lovely garden so I would say I know a decent amount, but there is surely much more I do not yet know and I cannot wait to learn it. Is there something you simply cannot wait to begin discovering?” Finally, they paused for a breath and to allow the other first year to respond.

Danaë raised an eyebrow before letting out a short laugh. "Yeah, I suppose you could say I'm looking forward to the schol year. I've been to a few muggle schools, most of my family goes to Beauxbatons though."
What was Nyx like? Aside from what seemed to be boundless energy and a dazzling smile, Danaë didn't quite know what to think about them. But she was nice, yes, and that seemed to be enough for now.
Honestly, this was probably one of the few interactions she had had with children her age outside of her family. Even though her dad's had moved to London, they still spent nearly 8 months of the year in France so there really wasn't much of a difference. Her cousins? Quinn and AJ? They probably didn't count because they'd been there her entire life, more like siblings than anything else. And muggle children, she barely talked to them, so this would probably be the first actual interaction.
So would this girl be friend or foe? That would be up to chance. The honest point was, this train ride was rather interesting and she'd rather see more of them.
"I'm interested in Charms- no Transfiguration, maybe Care of Magical Creatures or Defense Against the Dark Arts. My family has a couple kneazles so that's pretty interesting. I'd love to be an animagus or find a patronus and oh gods I'm rambling."
Blowing a strand of pale hair out of her face, "Is there a patronus you would want?" she questioned, before dejectedly trying to move the strand of hair back into place.
"Do you have a spare hair tie?"

“You’ve been to muggle schools? What were they like? And if most of your family attends Beauxbatons why is it that you are going to Hogwarts? And that’s quite a few subjects. You must be quite the learner, then. Transfiguration is something I’m rather interested in as well myself, though not very much. The other subjects you mentioned have never really interested me as much, but I am looking forward to learning them nonetheless,”Interacting with @Danaë Corentin-Devereux
They leaned forward on their hands, elbows resting on their knees. They were getting rather invested in this conversation and already were learning new things. Not necessarily things that would be useful but what did that matter. Connections were important to make— at least, according to some books they’ve read. And friends perhaps even more so— once again, according to books. And a life long nemesis even more than that— this one was something they came up with.
“And rambling is fine, I don’t mind at all,” Nyx carried hair ties on their wrist all the time despite them having much too short hair to be tied up. Their sisters both had rather long hair and often forgot to carry their own so it often became Nyx’s job to do so. They pulled one off, a simple black, and offered it to Danaë.
“Being an Animagus does seem quite interesting. What form do you think you would take? And I can’t say there is a specific patronus I want at the moment considering I don’t know too much about the specifics but I do think it would be rather interesting to look into. Thinking about it now, I think it would be pretty cool to figure out how to have one this year,”

"Muggle schools are basic, arithmetic, writing, the basics. I went for ma mère. I'm only really going to Hogwarts because of- actually I don't know the reason I'm to Hogwarts but here I am. Wait, actually it's probably because my cousin and I would probably cause mass destruction, but not in a bad way. "
Gratefully accepting the hair tie, she leaned forward, pulling her hair into a low ponytail with a soft smile.
"For an animagus, even though we don't get it until fifth year, I studied, I'd love to be a snow leopard or something? And a patronus is way too far away though. I don't even think we start to learn it until sixth year. But I guess it would be interesting to get a canine or something."
Clasping her hands and resting her hands on them, this seemed to be a good connection to make, and a fairly interesting conversation to say the least.
"I mean you said you're interested in herbology, is there a job that you would want with that in mind?" And though that sounded a little weird (Danaë probably could have said that better), with that she just let Nyx continue the conversation.

“Basic? Well, I suppose that makes sense,” Nyx raised an eyebrow at ‘mass destruction’. “That sounds like it would be quite the sight, good mass destruction. I’m intrigued,”Interaction with @Danaë Corentin-Devereux
“I wonder if there are rules regarding learning spells before the ye at they are taught. I can’t imagine the staff would want to stifle our education, but perhaps there are rules around it. If there aren’t, however, I think it would be quite an experience being the youngest students with patronus’ in our generation. Unless, of course, someone else has already thought of that,”
They looked her over a bit and commented casually. “You could certainly make for a rather majestic snow leopard if you were one,”
Danaë could make for a nice friend. We’re they friends already? It seemed a bit fast, so perhaps not. Nyx did not know very much on the topic in all honesty. They supposed that they would just do with this relationship as they did with everything else in life: whatever they feel like in the moment.
“Yes, herbology. A job? I’m not quite certain but I think perhaps something in medicine? Herbal remedies and the such. Or possibly a researcher. I think I would quite enjoy researching all types of plant life. Both magical and mundane. Other than herbology, I think I would have fun experimenting with potions. I would be very happy if I could invent a potion or discover a new plant,”

"Ah yes, the idea of 'mass destruction' comes from the great prank of '19. Which I will not go into detail about because of personal reasons." A wave of a hand and Danaë moved on to the next topic.
"Honestly, I'm sure they have advanced lessons. And I wouldn't quite mind becoming one of the youngest students with a patronus' in our generation, " looking over Nyx, she smirked, "and I could see you as a dove- no that sounds basic, maybe a falcon?"
Nyx was a rather interesting fellow. She wouldn't quite mind being friends (not that she knew much about what being a friend entailed, just that Nyx would probably be a good one). So all in all that was fine.
"Oh I can imagine it!" Taking on an overly dramatic tone of voice and spreading her hands, "Nyx Dove, graduate of the Hogwarts School of Magic in Scotland has created a new hybrid of plant. No- a new potion."
As the conversation petered slightly, the creaking of the door of the train car began rather prominent, a rather fitting background to the darkening sky above them. I wonder if the candy lady is coming soon?
