The 28th of December, 2021
Afternoon
Manchester, England
It was the end of the fourth month and by a not-so-important coincidence — the end of the year. Four months since she didn't return to the school. Since she didn't get on the Hogwarts Express with Xailah and Pericles. Her parents were being logical. And they were 100% correct in their statements. It was dangerous, Meenauh was the only child, they had to take it all under their control. It was just safer.

She spent these months, of course, studying and reading. But the social break-through during her time at the school made it possible to talk to people. And considering how many wizards from the mugglehood she got acquainted with, she wanted to study the muggle life even more than before. So she got a few new muggle acquaintances from the neighbourhood — her own age, and spent just a little bit of time with them, as they were neighbours. Turned out few knew her as she didn't spend much time outside before, and fortunately these guys were new to their area, so everything was new to them. She started to talk to them about science and stuff, but it turned out they didn't feel like talking about anything else but Teak-Took and some books of faces. Meenauh failed to comprehend and was just smiling and saying she was raised in conservative traditions. So, her only muggle acquaintances were those from the muggle libraries and she could learn something interesting about muggles' history and science.

But her favourite place was always the Blackwell's Bookstore. It was old. And big. It seemed like the time stopped somewhere at the end of the 19th century and she felt comfortable there as if it was Hogwarts' library. And this cool post-Xmas afternoon was not much different from other afternoons, which she used to visit the bookstore and search for more interesting books from the muggle world. She like going through one theme and looking through books, which sounded like written in a different language. Though, there were always quite a few people inside, the owners knew her already, but were polite enough to restrain the small talk to minimum. If she was giving the impression of a weird girl, it was more than fine to her. She didn't need more attention.

That day the door's bell rang once and a person with colourful hair entered the shop. While spending so much time among muggles, she sort of got used to expressive hair colours the muggle teenagers wore. She observed the... she couldn't quite comprehend whether she was a boy, or a girl, which only peeked her interest in the entrant. She narrowed her eyes to follow the interesting person, trying to confront the unfading feeling in the back of her mind that they must have met somewhere before.

The wix was left alone at home with a small allowance, they recently came back from their home country trip, and now Lady Angelique wanted them to go out there- spend money on trains and stores outside the city. Somehow, she decided it would be best to go on a scenic train to Manchester. That part Jay certainly did not mind until halfway through when Lady decided to watch some obnoxious wizard game show with the volume on full.

Once arriving, Lady Angelique said she had a friend she would have liked to visit, before she could suggest Jay should tag along they had already run off down the road. There was no way they were going to have some fancy tea with some snobbish ladies... After checking their muggle phone they saw an art museum of sorts nearby, they had some money so why not pass by there later? Jay walked down streets observing muggles as they passed by, they found them quite annoying but honestly, wizards were just as annoying. That much they learned from their homeschooling trip.

They made a turn into a street that was much less busy, a sign had caught their eye. A bookstore? It would be impossible for them to not go in, they passed by the glass windows, flustered by the reflection of their blazing bright purple hair, and walked in. It was quite a nice bookstore, it wasn't exactly modern and Jay absolutely loved that. The smell of old books reminded them of a certain redhead... if only they knew what she was up to. As they scanned the bookstore with their eyes, looking for a shelf to look through first, they made eye contact with a girl who seemingly was maybe staring at them?

In instinct, the awkward wix gave a wave to the girl, "Hey?" their voice cracked and Jay felt such huge shame, at least it was some sort of step forward to being polite, no?

The intriguing person moved further into the shop and met her eyes. Meenauh instantly, as if waking up from a dream, turned her stare away, understanding that it may have been awkward and totally not polite. But it turned out she was already noticed as a ringing 'Hey' shot through the bookstore's cosy air and pierced her on the spot. Why was she staring again?

"Ah," she started, turning towards the owner of the voice, "I'm sorry, I just had a feeling that I know you from somewhere, but-", she cut her voice as she couldn't easily said that she wasn't going to school for quite some time, and then which school — just spit it out that she was going to a special school of magic — why not, it's usually working on some muggles who really consider it a nice joke and decide not to go anywhere deeper than that.

"But I must have just mistaken you for someone else," she made herself finish the abrupt sentence and raced to change the topic: "Looking for anything in particular? I'm quite an often visitor here and I've already learned my way around this place," she smiled and waved her hand as if demonstrating that the place had actually belonged to her.

She knew every person in her year. She knew most of the students in the years around her year. She, of course, mostly knew the names and sometimes she didn't quite remember the appearance. But spending a few months away from the school may have tampered with her memory. Just half a year ago, she could have sworn this person was in her year and in her house. But meeting a person from Hogwarts in Manchester at this time of the year, especially from her own house and her own year was pretty unlikely, so she just mentally shooed the thought away, focusing on the new acquiantance. Anyway, even if she would have known who that was, it didn't feel like they've ever talked to each other.

Apparently, they were recognized as someone else, Jay found this quite odd. Dyed hair wasn't exactly rare though they felt unique enough to not be mistaken as someone else, their thoughts diverted... If someone were to mistake them again, they would change their hair! Jay Victoria could not have someone mistaking them for anyone else. It was a sort of strange pride they had for themself.

"Ah well I've got a big school, always confusing people heh, it's normal," Jay said. The purple-haired Wix was quite glad when she said she was a regular, it would be a great help for looking around. "Honestly, I just wandered in hoping I'd something interesting. I'm kinda not from here..." they said, picking up a book with an interesting cover.

Jay wasn't exactly sure how long they were going to be in Manchester, no more than a couple of days hopefully. A new book would be a nice addition to their new bookshelf, they read the back of the book in their hand. It was one of those romance mystery novels Lady Angelique loved, Jay was once looking for novels in her room and accidentally read a not-so-friendly mystery novel... They put back the book onto the shelf and picked out another one.

It was so hard concentrating on what the person was saying, because in the back of her mind, Meenauh was frantically restoring the lists of Hogwarts students and going through all of them one by one. She was matching her memories about them with the face she was observing at that moment in case some name pops up and clicks.

Maybe she could just ask? If the person would be from Hogwarts they'd instantly change in face and then it would be easier to hide the conversation from muggles. If the person wouldn't be from Hogwarts, then they'd ask again to clarify what was she saying and Meenauh would sink the conversation down to 'nevermind' state and quickly change the topic. Sounded like a win-win situation, if they'd be weighing the odds.

Would mentioning Hogwarts be automatically considered a breach of the Statute? She didn't like cast a spell or something. Not that she'd reveal a huge part of the wizarding world out there for muggles. They'd first need to understand and comprehend. Muggles rarely do that, they just skip and laugh. Or consider you a weirdo and don't talk with you anymore.

She got a big school; she said. Hogwarts is big. Did muggles have such big schools? A whole castle for a school? Why not. Muggles had everything. If not everything then definitely a lot. Having a school looking like a castle was nothing special, if only they'd want to have one.

"Something interesting?" Meenauh repeated, "Hmm," she hummed. This was an opportunity, and she wouldn't let it become an opportunity missed: "Okay, give me a second."

She rushed into the depth of the shop and quickly searched through a pile of books of what muggles considered occultism, and found a book about... yeah, about magic. Muggles don't take these things seriously, but a wizard, especially who doesn't know about these books available among muggles, would definitely be at least very surprised.

She grabbed the book and rushed back to the couple.
"Check this," she handed over the book and stared at the face of her conversant to not miss a single wavering of nerve, "It's actually very fascinating and equally silly."

Upon being handed over the book, Jay was absolutely baffled. This was probably the most emotion they had shown during the entire interaction. Flipping through the first pages of the book Jay couldn’t help but to mutter under their breath, “Heh… silly muggles indeed…”

It looked quite complicated for the Wix, none of it looked anything like what they’ve learned at school. Jay even tried to think about the books they’ve seen back at the Victoria manor, this did not ring a single bell. There were some illustrations and words that somewhat made sense but upon reading closer, it wasn’t anything useful in the wizarding world. Nonsense was occasionally humorous for the Wix, this moment wasn’t the occasion. In Jays eyes the book seemed to have been written by a muggle madman, and for this girl to recommend it was quite concerning.

They closed the book and looked up at her, “Quite fascinating, is this what you usually like to read?” Jay asked, their voice slightly wavering with confusion. They couldn’t help but to wonder how Sir Victoria would react to such a nonsensical book, or how in the name of Shacklebolt muggles were allowed to write such things.

Gorgon, who was in their pocket kept rolling around despite quite literally in the presence of its owner. At this point Jay was trying to suppress a laugh in the fairly quiet bookstore, a rather troublesome idea came to mind.

“What if,” Jay paused for dramatic effect as a big grin spread across their face, “We tried a mu- er- a spell?” They asked her. Since the muggle magic books were nonsense to Jay, they figured that perhaps attempting to ‘cast’ something would be quite harmless. Either way, they were trying to have some sort of fun with a muggle or not.

Meenauh was carefully examining the face of the person she still couldn't quite place yet. The expression was fascinating, but again — the level of details in the book would be both fascinating for a wizard and a muggle equally. She heard a muffled line spoken and could swear she heard a word 'muggle', but it was too dangerous to go all upfront with direct approach.

"Me?" she instinctively spoke back as the question was shot at her after the book was examined thoroughly, "Ah, no, I come here from time to time to read about... ah... well, about pretty much everything," she realised that she couldn't have put anything specific that would satisfy herself as an answer.

"This book just fell on me once, and I believe it's been here for years — just lying on a shelf or travelling from one to another," she smiled, "as mu-, I mean, as it is unlikely people would find it anyhow useful," she smiled wider and awkwardly.

"Good Merlin, Meenauh, you almost dropped 'the word' in presence of a potential muggle, congratulations," a voice scolded her in a very irritatingly mocking way.

The next proposal made Meenauh frown as she heard her companion starting to say 'muggle' as well. But then it changed to a 'spell', which surprised Meenauh even more, instantly making her forget about the proper and improper usage of words. A spell... Muggles had their own understanding of what they thought magic looked like. Most of the time, other muggles just laughed at the concept of magic itself. But a muggle couldn't perform magic anyway, so it was safe... But she wasn't a muggle...

Meenauh was practising wandless magic, but so far she failed to do even a single spell. The book was all fake, but... magic was weird. And Meenauh couldn't release a frown, probably starting to sweat a little. There was always a risk.

"After you," she took the book and opened it on a random page, raising her eyebrow with a sneaky smirk of sudden enjoyment. What could go wrong if a muggle would try to cast a fake 'spell' designed by another muggle?
