Jacob may be a beginner at duels but he is beginning to get good at it, specifically, the Disarming Charm that he learned after getting the Troll essay done. The Disarming Charm was somehow his specialty now, he could disarm an individual of their wand and knock them with the Knockback Jinx. This would allow Jacob to finish a duel without having to resort to cheating his way out of a tight situation but he knows that this only works if someone is not looking, he had been doing research about dueling that went wrong for example, the Medieval Wizards when it comes to dueling, death seems to be inside every duel from that bloody period in Wizarding history, he, of course, this year he was studying the Wizards Council in History of Magic, the precursor to the Ministry of Magic, but he realized even then that the Department of Mysteries was there even before the Ministry of Magic was put into place, so by far the Department of Mysteries was the oldest department in the Ministry of Magic; though rumor has it that this was because the people inside the Department of Mysteries, that this is the case; probably due to the rooms inside. Jacob, of course, knew that someone was coming to the dueling stage with him to practice dueling, that of his newfound friend, Henry Knight.
