There was a chill in the air, one that extended throughout the entirety of the grounds. Very few students where out and about this afternoon, many savoring the warmth of castle, instead of venturing out onto the grounds, when, frankly, unless they had racing or quidditch practice, there was no reason to.

Avery, of course, was an outlier. Bundled up in layer upon layer, and armed with a pen and her notebook, the girl set out off to the grounds. Since she had gotten back from break, Avery had been doing research on plants that grow in the Scottish climate, both magical and well, normal. Finally feeling confident enough in her ability, and caught up with her classwork, the girl took the opportunity provided to go start indexing the plants on the grounds.

After a little bit of wandering, wondering if this was a smart idea, or if she was going to get frostbite, Avery finally squatted down next to a plant, one she would later identify as Asphodel, and began to sketch it out while noting down its properties. About 10 minutes had passed when Avery's hands started to clench up, clearly going numb from the cold. Her grip on the pen loosened, and it dropped to the ground, along with her notebook. "Shoot," she muttered, trying to pick the items back up, but failing.

Avery brought her hands up to her face and began to blow on them, attempting to warm them up, and in all honesty, failing.

Willow wasn't exactly a fan of winter. Not only did her grandmother die during winter, it was cold and desolate. Though... the snow was pretty. So she supposed she could let it continue to exist so long as it was nice to look at. The young artist ultimately preferred drawing things in full bloom, or during the change from summer to fall. Drawing a tree and its changing colors, or a flower that had reached its peak bloom were the ideal. Here though, there as nothing but barren trees and fields of white. If she left a page blank, it would be a complete picture.

Still she found herself wandering the grounds with a sketchbook and art supplies tucked into a tote bag. She was as bundled up as she could be with layers on layers. She wore pink earmuffs that she was gifted long ago, as well as thin gloves that were fur lined. Drawing in gloves was a nightmare, but these were as thin as she was willing to go in the weather. It would grant her enough mobility where she was still able to draw easily and finish up the sketch later.

Heavy boots crunched through snow as she made her way across the grounds looking for a good place to set up shop. Her eyes caught on a girl who seemed like she was having issues picking up her art supplies and the helpful prefect did a light jog over to help. "You alright?" She picked up the supplies and handed them over. "You know... you really should be wearing gloves out here." Willow took off her own gloves and handed them over. "Here, get them warmed up while I sketch this." Willow flipped open her own sketchbook to start doing a rough outline of the flower in front of her. "I'm Willow, by the way."

Pins and needles is a phrase often used to describe numbness, and Avery, she had never really understood why that term was used. Of course, she knew it had something to do with nerve endings and signals to the brain, but pins and needles, why not just say pins or needles? Of course, Avery has never experienced physical numbness before today, so her confusion made sense.

Pins and needles, though, that was exactly what the first year was experiencing today. No other words could describe the prickly sensation running through her fingertips and up towards her forearm. The girl looked around, she could barely open and close her fist, and the thought of picking up her supplies from the icy ground sounded just a bit uncomfortable.

Prefect to the rescue! Avery heard the crisp sound of snow being stepped on and turned her head towards the noise. The girl was a prefect, Avery knew that much, but struggled to place a name to the face. A blush came over the first years face as she realized just how moronic her decision, or lack of decision, had been.

"Thank you..." the first year offered the elder, sending a shy smile towards them.

She peered over, glancing at the other student's sketch book, it was really wonderful work. "Nice to meet you Willow, I'm Avery."
