Bridget was usually pretty good when it came to her responsibilities. She didn’t procrastinate often, she put in her best effort. She liked being useful, and if useful meant putting in long hours, she could do it. But coming back from break, the same motivation just wasn’t there. She didn’t feel up to all the work. She wasn’t sure she was ever even that useful anyway. Stopping wasn’t an option, though, was it? There were grades to keep up and duels to prepare for. And it wasn’t just herself she might be letting down; as a duelling captain, she had a team counting on her. They needed her to scout and strategize and provide pointers. And with whatever was going on with Santario and how intimidating Dmitri was, she was the only very approachable Slytherin captain; she couldn’t just disappear or fall behind on them.

And so she was still doing the work, but it was more taxing, harder to find the energy, and finishing tasks didn't carry the same sense of accomplishment, like running a marathon through mud instead of sprints on a track. Active things were a little easier to do, at least; something about needing to sit down to start on something made it all too easy to find herself staring at unanswered questions. She went on runs sometimes, always well away from the Forbidden Forest, because that helped shake off sleepiness and get her into the groove of doing things. All she had to do was start moving, which didn't take so much working up to.

More often she went to the duelling room for its similar appeal of exercise and as something she had to do anyway. Spell-casting was everything: her identity as a witch, a key component of her social life, the decider of much of her self-confidence. There was a duelling stage coming up, which always meant even more time spent preparing, and coming off of winter break meant she had rust to shake off from two weeks where she couldn't cast a single spell.

She was far from the only one there--activity always increased in those focused weeks leading up to matches--but she'd secured a practice dummy without difficulty and claimed a corner of the room. Some days she would find a teammate to work with, either one already there or one she'd asked to come. Another set of eyes meant catching little errors in form you couldn't pick up yourself, or perhaps sound boarding ideas on spells to use in succession or where best to aim so your opponent couldn't easily get out of the way. She was not feeling particularly up to that; she hadn't talked very much to people all day, coming off a poor night's sleep and really not in the mood for socializing. For as much as she valued being on a team, she did like working alone.

The training session was going fine. At this point, casting was muscle memory. She'd devoted a lot of time last year to working out the wrinkles, like devastating backfires, and every new spell was given sufficient effort to master; what was the point of knowing spells if she couldn't rely on them to work? It took her a minute to get up to the speed needed to land a hit on the dummy, its bewitched movements avoiding her first few spells, but then she found a decent rhythm. It was just her, her wand, and her target, the rest of the room and her ever-spinning thoughts fading into the background.

Recently, it had been becoming more of a habit for Everly to be going to the Dueling Club outside of practice with the Gryffindor team. Early in the morning, on weekends, Friday afternoons, she'd make her way down or up a few floors and find an empty room, all for her to wield her wand and practice, jets of light darting around as they echoed soundly. Sometimes there would be another person or two accompanyings her, but only rarely. She ignored them, most of the time; people she didn't know or bother to attempt to recognize. Sometimes she'd find someone there she knew, and they'd greet each other, before going off to do each of their things.

Starlee was once there, and they'd had a lovely chat about meringues before practicing spells with each other. She'd found it was so much better having someone there, someone she was comfortable with to critique and examine her, tell her what she was doing wrong, and encourage her upon what she was doing right; in turn, Everly would do the same. Overall, it had been a great day.

Most of the time, it was just her.

It'd been a while since Everly last visited the Dueling Club for something other than an actual duel (one and a half weeks, for team practice). It wouldn't hurt anyone to put in some extra practice. Everly felt to urge to let out some anger, shoot some spells, and so that she would do. She already had a spell in mind she wanted to learn*, or at least attempt - Ventus, the Wind Jinx. Everly had seen it been used multiple times while watching duels, and on rare occasions, the spell could split itself into two, targeting multiple targets. With some extra research, she'd learned that this was something that could happen if Ventus was cast exceptionally well. She also knew of Lamik's particular ability to do the same.

(Obviously, Everly noted to learn that later as well.)

To her surprise, when she walked into the Dueling Club this time, someone was already there. A lone figure stood upon the dueling piste, streams of light shooting from her wand one after the other. After a moment, Everly realized it was someone she was familiar with (kind of); Bridget Collins, one of the Slytherin team's captains. She recalled her to be an impressive dueler; Everly hadn't been able to watch any of her duels live at all since they'd been going on while she had been up on the stage, but she knew Bridget had won both of her duels so far, automatically making Bridget her target. After all, Ventus was a third year spell - that meant Bridget could help her, right?

"Hi! Um -" Her voice echoed loudly as she paused, unsure how to continue. Everly knew some people were special and preferred their surnames over their first names - did Bridget too? Would she be offended? "C - Collins -" It felt weird to say, but she trudged on. "I have a question, if you don't mind?"

She took some time to warm up, starting with familiar spells. By the time she was done with that, up to the speed needed for any serious practice, she had figured out what she wanted to do with this session. Her focus today would be aiming while off-balance, as one so often was. The duelling stance was sturdy, solid, and so it was little trouble to shoot a straight shot. Typically, though, you weren't so stationary, forced to weave away from incoming spells with only a short, often imperfect window to get off your own. The better she was at aiming amidst a leap to the side or a duck, the better future duels would go. Just because Henry had taken most of the fire during stage one did not mean that would always be the case, and it certainly hadn't been in her duels last year. She had done perfectly fine with the evading then, but often her aim suffered; she couldn't have that.

It wasn't the smoothest of processes. The fact it was hard was the point, but tempering her frustration and trudging onward cost energy and enjoyment. A while after starting, by which point she had decided the key was remaining squared to her target as much as possible through the dodge, something breached her concentration. A 'hi', at which she lowered her wand to identify who was talking to her.

She was expecting a teammate, that seemed most likely. It wasn't practice, but she was still a co-captain and wouldn't mind the interruption to lend a hand. But it was no Viridian Viper breaching her focus, in fact a girl whose name she couldn't immediately recall. Though recognizable as a duellist, she wasn't someone Bridget was very familiar with. There were, after all, forty-eight people between all the teams, and having the written rosters memorized wasn't quite the same as identifying everyone on sight. Squinting slightly, as if that helped, through the rest of the younger girl's introduction, she narrowed it down. She'd played last year. A Gryffindor, someone she was pretty sure she'd taken notes on last stage in preparation for when their Houses faced off. She could practically see the name at the top of the page...

Because it would be weird to wait until the name clicked to answer, she put the name-searching on hold for a moment. A question? Other teams didn't normally approach her. She supposed none of the Gryffindor captains were in here at this exact moment. This girl did know their Houses would be on opposing sides of a duelling platform not long from now, right? Bridget was hesitant to answer questions with that in mind. And she had been in the middle of something. But the request had been polite, and if the question edged anywhere into information Bridget wasn't keen on sharing, she was hardly obliged to. "Okay. What is it?" She did not sound particularly enthused. Still, she was accepting, now fully turned from her dummy to face the Gryffindor, wasn't she?

Well, that was a great start.

Everly hadn't been quite sure what to expect from Bridget. After all, the two had never interacted before, (as proven by her own unsteadiness in approaching the dueling captain - Everly liked to think she was good at talking with others, though that wasn’t always the case.) although she’d thought she would be getting more than just a tiny bit of cold dialogue.

Bridget didn't seem particularly amused to address Everly's inquiries, and though Everly could understand why, she'd at least hoped the Slytherin captain would be a bit... nicer? Their teams were facing off next stage, but it wasn't like an innocent question would ruin it entirely, would it? Everly did get what Bridget might've been feeling, though - she was extremely competitive, and hated the feeling of losing. Perhaps that was why Bridget was acting so uptight, but the sport was, after all, there for the purpose of enjoyment, for the purpose of getting better. Either way, she just had to hope Bridget didn't get too offended by anything she said.

The Slytherin hadn’t exactly said no, though. Bridget had stopped her spell casting and turned towards Everly, brisk as her words were. Everly latched onto this small form of acknowledgement, trying desperately to find consolation in it.

Discreetly, she tried to stand up straighter and appear a tad bit more confident than she really was (spoiler: not very much). She cleared her throat quietly, taking another few steps, this time, more of a fast walk than a stumble. She wasn’t especially good at disguising herself. “Erm, yeah. It’s… it’s about a spell I’ve heard of before? Ventus? I mean, you don’t have to- uh, yeah.”

Everly winced internally. Faking confidence had never been her strong suit, and almost always ended badly, as evidenced, often with her somehow messing up and doing something wrong. All she had to hope for was that Bridget decided to help her out here, because she wasn’t doing too well at something she prided herself on.

Everly. That was her name. Bridget was briefly satisfied with having figured it out, and this saved her from having to carefully edge around addressing her by an actual name. It had taken a minute to place, but she wasn't new to the duelling team, having participated in her first year if Bridget recalled correctly. She would have hated to have to admit she couldn't think of her name.

Whatever this was about, Everly did not seem very confident, shifting where she stood and stumbling over words. Bridget should have used this observation to make a conscious effort to lessen that anxiety. Just because Dmitri, the face of the Viridian Vipers, was unapproachable and generally disagreeable did not mean she had to live up to that; on the contrary, she tried to counter that negativity and be a positive point of contact for the team and the other captains. But right now she was tired and mostly just irritated it was taking so long for Everly to get to her point.

"I'm familiar with Ventus," she supplied, unsure of how else to answer. Everly wasn't exactly making a specific inquiry or request. Did she want Bridget to show it to her? Did she have questions on the theory of it? Maybe she wanted to know why it had been used in a certain situation?

When it was clear the Gryffindor wasn't going to clarify right away, she added, "What were you wondering about it?" She tried to not sound so harsh with the prompt, though her patience was slipping. Everly was only a second year anyway, wasn't she? That was not to say she couldn't manage an advanced spell--Bridget had been teaching herself older DADA spells since last year--but they required more focus and precision and she was pretty sure she was not qualified to be teaching that, if learning the spell was what Everly was after. Hopefully it was just theoretical. She had the feeling she wouldn't have such a hard time brushing her off today, though, if it came to it.

BRIDGET LOOKED IRRITATED (probably because Everly was bothering her at the moment, her mind helpfully supplied), so Everly was left with a poor attempt to salvage the situation. Somehow, she'd gotten herself into this, so she had to get out. Her lack of confidence wasn't doing her much good, either; she hadn't even thought about possible repercussions. Everly thought she'd fixed that a while ago—to bury the uncomfortable pit in her stomach, hide it within smiles and jokes and masked confidence. She just had to cover it back up again. Steeling herself, she met Bridget's gaze again, this time with the goal to get her answers and scram.

Everly had many, almost too many questions on the tip of her tongue, but a little feeling told her this probably wasn't the best time. It would be nice to learn the spell, but she figured she could do that later, preferably away from others' judging eyes (and, to be honest, probably her own's, too). She picked one at random, one that Bridget would (hopefully) be able to answer, and then be thanked politely before Everly would try to forget about their little not-so-pleasant (at least for Bridget) encounter.

"Oh, yeah. I was wondering—uh—how does the—" she held up two fingers, drawing out a v-shape. "—split work. You know, how sometimes the spell will, uh... two?" She nodded to herself. "And! I don't know if you've seen them do it before, but some people can, like, make any spell do that, not just Ventus. Although, I don't know if that's just something any spell can do. ... Can some people split their spells in three? Four? Is there a limit?" At least, finding questions in the mess that was her brain wasn't too hard to do. Hopefully, that wouldn't bite her in the back as well.

Ventus was a pretty interesting spell. Useful for hitting hard while trapping your opponent in a vortex, unique in the splitting thing it sometimes did. Bridget had once told Illowy it was her favorite spell, as far as duelling went, and she stood by that still, though she imagined at some point some powerful higher year spell would catch her attention and steal the jinx's spot. Its applications were broad, so what made it an interesting spell also made it impossible to tell where Everly's inquiry would go.

But slowly she clarified. It was riddled with filler 'uhs' and rather an onslaught of questions. If Bridget had cared a bit less about how she presented herself, she might have put up a hand and told the younger girl to slow down, to ask just one question at a time. That certainly would have been a lot easier to deal with. She held her patience, though, quietly listening and trying to keep track of it all. All the questions pertained to splits, at least, so she figured if she explained that she'd probably hit everything Everly wanted to know.

"The split, yeah." She sighed softly, trying to figure out where to start. "I can't say I know the exact science behind it, but when you cast the spell well enough, the spell can split into two. I think the wind has to do with it being prone to split." Bridget did fairly extensive research for the advanced DADA spells she taught herself, but less so for the ones she learned in class. For those, she mostly relied on the lecture and what she had to know to complete the homework, perhaps only researching a few aspects of interest further when she had the time. Most of her familiarity with the Wind Jinx came from trial and error, witnessing its effects firsthand in the duelling room.

What else had she asked about? Right, splitting on command, like Dmitri did. "There are people who can split any spell intentionally. It's a learned skill, while anyone can split Ventus." And not an easily learned skill, at that. Bridget had tried a few brief times to see if she could will another spell to split, but she'd come up emptyhanded and lacked the time and motivation to put in the needed effort.

The last of her questions: was there a limit? "I've never seen anyone split their spells more than in two," she answered simply. Well, actually... "I suppose you could say a Ventus could split four times, but I wouldn't really count that as being able to split a spell in four. Someone with the skill could split the cast, and then each stream could split as well by nature of being Ventus."

That was everything, right? "Does that make sense?" By that, Bridget was checking if Everly had any follow-up questions, if she'd missed anything, or if she'd explained poorly, but it might have come across as condescending, her voice lacking enthusiasm. Another day, Bridget might have even found Everly's curiosity and little hand movements cute. Today was just not that day.
