| ── | The astronomy tower was chilly at night, wind howling through the knocks and crannies, snow swirling outside in a dance which would have stolen your mind, were you to look at it for too long. Hogwarts was never quiet. Even in the dead of night, with most students sleeping soundly in their beds and prefects pretending they were happy to be patrolling the halls, the castle was alive. Portraits chattered amongst themselves and teachers practiced the concept of 'Do as I say, not as I do', staying up way too late marking and reading books as thick as their arms. And Draven? He'd dragged Cain along with him to the tallest point of Hogwarts, and was busy using a locksmith's knife [x] to unlock the door to the classroom. The two boys had waited until Mr. Nigel's last class had left, and the teacher had packed up his things. Thirty minutes of anxious waiting. Before, in the Slytherin dorms, Cain had asked him if he wanted to get in trouble. Well. He was certainly not intending to. Once they slipped into the classroom, the first thing Draven noticed was how bright everything was. Moonlight was breaking through the ominous gray clouds hovering above the tower. It's rays painted everything in silver white, giving the classroom an enchanted look. More enchanted than usual, he supposed. "I love this school," Draven murmured, making his way to one of the windows and peering down over the snow covered castle. |

As they walked through the halls, Cain felt himself growing more nervous by the minute. In the day the halls were bustling with other students but at night they were nearly empty and he felt exposed on all sides. He edged along the wall, peering up to see some of the people in the portraits either sleeping or having hushed conversations amongst one another. He wondered just how sentient they were, if he had a painting of himself, would it be just like him or how an artist perceived him? His mother certainly tried to commission a painting of the family but she barely got his father to stay for photos, which she did have many of.
Cain shook his head to remain on high alert, thinking of reasons to be out should they get caught. Perhaps that he'd left his homework here in the tower and he had to come and get it in order to turn it in? That might track. He felt a strong thrill somewhere in his heart, something like a mix of fear and joy when they made it inside the classroom. So glad he wore his thicker black sweater as he tucked his hands in the sleeves to keep his fingers warm. He brought a candle in his pocket but it looked like they didn't even need it for how bright the moon made everything, his gaze drawn up to the stars before letting a smile creep over his lips.
"Me too." He walked quietly to one of the windows and looked out across the forbidden forest. He almost felt like he could drop out of the window and sail across the night, he'd even welcome the cold air.
He tilted his head and drew back, then looked around the classroom. "We should leave something here to prove that we were here." Then he remembered Draven's lock picking knife. "Is that knife sharp? We could leave a small calling card inside of the teacher's desk!" It was perfect. He'd know it was there even if no one ever saw it. "Not our real names, but something else." He was practically a troublemaker now, just as his mother warned him. Breaking the rules was a slippery slope, she'd often tell him.

| ── | Draven's eyes lit up at the thought. He'd been planning something a little more reckless, but breaking into a teacher's desk was up there with things he wanted to do. "We'll make a criminal of you yet." the boy smirked, leaning away from the window, and directing his attention to Mr. Read's desk. A grand bookshelf was towering above it, something Draven had spent many hours peering at absentmindedly, fingers itching to pick up one of the tomes and flip it open, rather than spend another minute studying star charts. Now he was kneeling before it, working the latch of Mr. Read's desk, brows furrowed in concentration. "What should we call ourselves?" Draven mused, eyes narrowing when the lock just refused to give. Of course it would be harder, it was a teacher's desk after all. But when he'd bought the knife, the storekeeper had reassured him it would open just about any l- Click. Leaning back on his heels, Draven gave a self satisfied smile. Were his father to see him right then, he would have had a heart attack. Sneaking around Hogwarts without a care in the world, breaking into teachers' desks and planning to get up on the castle roof....no fine young gentlemen would be doing such things. Picking up one of the spare quills in Mr. Read's drawer and nabbing a piece of parchment, Draven set it atop his desk. "I'm thinking....'you need new locks'" He said, dipping the quill in a vial with emerald green ink. |

"I should hope not." He whispered back, but he was smiling. He had no ill will toward his astronomy teacher, though the subject was certainly difficult. Cain did love the view and this classroom, it was normal to want to leave a piece of yourself somewhere, wasn't it? Was it evil? He followed Draven as he mulled over their actions.
"Good question." When he thought about their names though, it was obvious. "Raven and Crow." Would that be too obvious? Perhaps, but it would still need to be proven and they probably couldn't break in here again for a long time after. His mother would be disappointed that he was risking his future like this, but for some reason that only spurred him on. In a small way. Maybe his father would look at him if he caused enough trouble? Behaving didn't seem to do anything. It only made sense to try the opposite.
He smiled at Draven's idea. "That works and... may I borrow your knife?" Cain had another more permanent idea. This would certainly land him in hot water if it was ever found but he needed to do it. If given that knife, Cain would etch something on the underside of Read's desk and he'd sit in class knowing it was there. A testament to his existence. A mark of his friendship with Draven scarred into wood, there even after they would leave this school to become adults in the distant future. They'd still be together in this classroom in this memory, bending the rules with the private view of the stars to themselves in the quiet of the night.

| ── | "You've got some nerve," Dray grinned, handing over the knife without a word of protest. Cain Corvus. The vandal. Whoda thunk it? Signing off their names, Dray set the quill back and capped the ink vial, placing both neatly back in their drawer, and locking it with a tap of his wand. The knife had left no damage behind, much to Dray's delight. It looked like nothing had been disturbed. Well. Mostly. For Cain was busy scrawling their names with the tip of the knife, raking away at ancient wood, leaving their mark on the castle. He'd crawled under the desk and was working quickly and efficiently, a mischievous glow in his eyes. Draven crouched by his side, watching as he worked. He had beautiful handwriting, one that Draven traced lightly with the tips of his fingers after the boy was done, heart beating faster in his chest, fear and excitement mixing together in a heady cocktail. Were they to get caught... They wouldn't get caught. "Come with me," he murmured. "Let's do something stupid." It was a short walk towards the outside of the astronomy tower, and a shorter one still to the top of the tower. Up above the world, where nothing was to stop the bitter February wind from sweeping through their hair and unsettling their robes. The snowfall had quieted down, huge flakes falling gracefully from clouds and settling atop the two boy's hair (if Cain followed Dray out the door). They could see everything from their perch, grounds bathed in silver moonlight and candles flickering in windows on the other side of the castle. Draven tiptoed all the way to the edge, settling in between one of the stone grooves of the tower, legs dangling dangerously above the void. "This is my favorite place in the world." Draven sighed, giving Cain a smile. They were wizards. And wizards need not fear heights. "It's so peaceful," he murmured, leaning back on his palms, not caring for the dust gathering on his robes. "Feels like nothing bad can happen up here." |

Cain smiled at that, Draven's approval only spurred him on. The idea that this might've been a bad idea was far away from his mind now as he carefully carved into the wood, making sure the letters were perfect. He carved their initials and then date. When he was pleased with his work and Draven's appreciation of it, he crawled out from under the desk and brushed the dirt and dust from his clothes after handing back the knife. He stared out at the classroom for a moment, memorizing the eye-line he'd use to remember where they were.
"Stupid?" He repeated as a question even as he was following Draven out. He was probably right, this was dangerous, but worth it. For some reason he couldn't convince himself to leave or stop now, they were passed the point of no return anyway. It felt even more dangerous as they went out into the cold, looking out all across the school; from here they could see everything. He drew in a sharp breath when he saw the lake, turning instead to look at the trees. He felt almost as if he could drop off here and take off into the night, but he wasn't much of a flier quite yet and there was no broom around that he could see. It kept coming to mind, remnants of dreams he had of flying.
"It's perfect out here." The ice and the quiet and Draven's company, it all aligned. He didn't have a fear of falling, even though a strong wind could've probably blown him right off to his death. He smiled back at his friend. "I love it here too, I'm glad we came here." And I'm glad we met, Cain finished in his mind. If they were in different houses, they might never have become friends like this and he was glad he was a Slytherin for once. "It does feel like nothing can get you here, except maybe a dragon..." He shrugged. "We would defeat it though. Somehow." The danger and the bracing wind made him feel almost invincible.

| ── | Draven peered down at the castle grounds below. It was on night like this, when clouds encroached on Hogwarts' towers and obscured the ground from view, that he felt like he could walk off. And keep walking. Upon the mists and the silver moonlight, walk until he reached the stars and lived amongst the gods. But that was incredibly stupid, so he wasn't about to do that. Instead, he stole a glance at Cain. Moonlight painted him in shades of silver and white, making the boy's normally pale skin even paler. He looked like a storybook prince, like the main character in a book that had been left on a shelf for decades. The book had bent yellow pages and a worn cover, with scraps of paper left within it, serving as makeshift bookmarks from a loving owner. Cain was the main character, and they were all just background noise to his story. "I'm glad we did too." Draven said quietly, fingers digging into the groves and cracks centuries of storms had worn into the tower. Around them, the wind blew stirring snow up from the castle turrets and sending snowflakes dancing between the two boys. It felt like a crime, to break the silence. So he didn't. Well. HE didn't. But the footsteps inside the astronomy classroom certainly did. |
