Fairy Overlords?
It was a chilly day outside and seeing that the grounds keeper was requesting help with fairies, Lizzy had thought it would be a good way to spend her otherwise uneventful day. The task was simply to create a festive holiday display where the two fairies placed under her care could thrive in the spotlight. Seeing as she was muggle-born and had not started the class of Care of Magical Creatures, Lizzy had not had much experience working with magical creatures. Nevertheless, she was quite excited to try.Word Count: 915
Both of her fairies were female, and seemed content for the most part, so Lizzy thought she would start on the display. Beginning with the base, she started what she thought was sure to be a display the fairies would love and adore. The base was painted a soft gold that shimmered slightly like the sun. The actual structure would resemble the stump of a tree trunk. It would have two miniature rooms seemingly carved into the sides and a staircase Lizzy had made out of cardboard connecting the two rooms. The top of the display would adhere to the theme of tree trunk stump and look like a log with the rings you would see on a tree and everything! Outside of the house, there would be false flowers, because after all, where would you find real flowers at this time of year?
Perhaps Lizzy had set the bar a bit high for the task, but this was one of the times she would let her creative side completely take over. When this side took over, it usually ended up with Lizzy setting her mind to a near impossible design or whatever it was she happened to be doing, and then trying her absolute best and still was disappointed when she couldn't meet her high expectations of herself. It probably wasn't the best thing for her mental health when she set such high expectations and was so hard on herself when it didn't turn out perfect. Even so, this time would be no different. The high expectations had already been set, and now Lizzy would work extra hard to meet them.
About an hour later, the task was complete. There were even little yellow lights in the rooms and fake snow lining the top. It wasn't exactly what she had had in mind, but it was pretty close, and looked pretty good if she did think so herself. Now, all that was left or missing rather, was the two fairies in the display. That wouldn't be too hard though. Apparently fairies loved attention, so getting them in a place where they would receive lots of it shouldn't be that difficult.
"Alright now you two," Lizzy said, turning to the fairies, who were perched on a table. They had watched her struggle and hadn't moved from the table for a whole hour. The fairies were much more patient than she had originally believed. "Your house is done, you can go on in now!"
The fairies did not move an inch. They just continued to watch her, and frankly, it was starting to get a bit creepy. "Did you hear me?" she asked cautiously. "You can go in. Once you're in there, you will get a bunch of attention. Isn't that what you want?" They stayed stubbornly put.
Lizzy stared at them and they stared right back. Forget creepy, these fairies were downright annoying. Why wouldn't they just do as she asked and get into the display she had worked so hard on? Honestly, it was like out of all the fairies she could have gotten, she was stuck with the two troublemakers that hated every attempt to make them happy.
"Come on, please?" Lizzy didn't expect that to have much effect either, and it didn't. She recalled that the fairies were to become her "temporary overlords" if she accepted the task, but she hadn't taken that seriously. She decided it was time the fairies were straightened out. It was not the brightest of ideas."You are not the boss of me. I am the boss of you," she told them. "So, if you two wouldn't mind knocking whatever this is off and getting into the house I worked so hard on, that would be great."
Finally, she had gotten a reaction out of them, but it wasn't the reaction she had been hoping for. They had stood up on the table with tiny little expressions of anger and rage on their faces. It was really quite terrifying for them being so small. Could fairies bite? A few students walked by just then, and Lizzy smiled tightly at them. Once they passed, she turned back to the miniature devils to try again.
"Okay look. I don't know what I did to make you hate me so much, other than that statement a few seconds ago, but I think we should really start over. I made this for the two of you so you both could get the attention you deserve from the students and staff here. I know
you both could already attract attention without it, but wouldn't you like to have a place to stay while you get attention?" They looked at her with skeptical expressions. "Fine. And you both are the rightful bosses of me." The fairies got up and went into the display with victorious expressions, while Lizzy was left with expressions of disgust, embarrassment, and a fair amount of hate for the miniature devils.
