Simon had never felt so short until now.
In terms of height, Simon didn't really feel insecure about how short he was. Besides a few annoying tall people, no one seemed to give a care about how small Simon was. He had never understood the boys who whined like babies about being short because 'girls won't like them". Unlike their pathetic lives, his did not revolve around girls, especially since he was 11 and haven't even reached puberty yet.
His issue now, however, wasn't about a girl. It was about how high the shelves were compared to him. Like, was it even necessary to have this high of shelves? How about make them short and have them stretch across the room? Was it that hard?
Simon left the shelves and looked around the library for a stool, finding none. He grabbed a chair to stand on, but it wasn't enough- he was still too short.
Simon cursed the gods and looked up at the book he needed- a thick, leather-binded book. There was only one thing that he could do now- he would have to climb up to get it. And so, he stepped onto the lower shelf, positioned his arms and legs, and began to climb.
It was surprisingly easy to climb. Up, up, up he went until he had reached the book he was looking for. Satisfied, he confidently grabbed the book and got ready to climb back down and act like nothing happened.
But when he looked down, he saw that it was a little too high for his liking. He had been able to scale it effortlessly before; why couldn't he do it now? And Simon just noticed that their palms had gotten sweaty... He couldn't move or he'd fall! Why, oh why...
He looked down and saw a first year boy in the library- which was good, because Simon did not want to risk breaking any bones right now.
"Help!" he called to the boy. "I'm stuck."

I was spending the evening in the library, mostly reading and taking notes about gargoyles in
“An Introduction to History” for my History of Magic homework, but I occasionally stared around the room because of boredom. You see, while I usually enjoyed studying, I didn’t particularly enjoy studying useless subjects that I have zero interest in and those include History of Magic. Alright, perhaps some people don’t think it’s useless and might find History very interesting but no amount of convincing me was going to change my mind about it. Unless I learn by studying it how I could create my own spells for example. Now back in the present, during one of those times I looked around, I saw a small boy, probably around the height of my younger brother, climbing a bookshelf, most likely trying to reach a book. If that was the case, then it probably hadn’t crossed his mind that he could just ask the librarian to get it for him and he was certainly lucky that she didn’t spot him as I’m sure it could earn him a good detention. Not that there’s such a thing as a bad detention but you get the point. Now it also probably hadn’t crossed his mind that he might not be able to get down from such a high point on the shelf and I’m only telling you that because he called out to me saying “Help, I’m stuck!”. As I got up from my chair to help him down, I asked “And how am I supposed to help you exactly? If you fall I’m too weak to catch you so do you just want me to push your back while you climb down so you won’t fall?” All that talking had given me enough time to stand up on the chair he had put there and wait for his response.

Oh boy. This was embarrassing.
Now, in a normal situation, he probably would have just given up on all hope of retrieving the book and just went on with his day. But today he was feeling awfully confident and figured that he could grab it without anybody noticing and just leave. Clearly that wasn't the case now- he was now resorting to asking someone else for help. Which Simon vowed to never do. He could usually handle things on his own. But not today, apparently. He never was scared of heights, so this was unusual and out of character for him to be so afraid.
But he was.
When the boy was called over, he asked Simon how he was supposed to help him. “If you fall I'll be too weak to catch you, so do you just want me to push your back while you climb down so you won't fall?"
Simon rolled his eyes at the boy's question. He obviously did not want him to try and catch Simon- he didn’t trust the boy to actually succeed. Even if he was bigger than him. “Just catch my book. I need to make sure it’s intact. Besides, it’s super heavy.” Without waiting for a response, he tossed the book towards him. “And yeah, do that too. Whatever. Just make sure I don’t crack my skull open.” he said, trying to keep the fear out of his voice. It was weird how afraid he was- it wasn't even that high up! "Pull yourself together," he whispered to himself. "It's not a big deal."
When his hands were securely placed on his back, Simon began to climb down, one foot at a time. When he reached the bottom, he dusted himself off and picked up his books. “Uh, thanks. I’m just going to go now. If we meet again, never mention this.” Simon said, like he had committed some kind of atrocious sin just by climbing on the shelves. It sounded ridiculous even to him, and he laughed a little through the humiliation.

“Just catch my book. I need to make sure it’s intact. Besides, it’s super heavy.” the boy said and I wouldn’t really care, but he said that it’s really heavy and I’m very weak. Even worse, he just tossed the book down without even waiting for a response and since I didn’t want the book to break, I quickly moved below it with my hands outstretched but it didn’t just land on them, it went further, forcing my elbows to bend before eventually landing on my chest and almost knocking me off the chair I was standing on. I regained my balance and then placed the book down on a shelf before the boy said “And yeah, do that too. Whatever. Just make sure I don’t crack my skull open.” I figured he referring to when I asked if I should push his back so that he wouldn’t fall while climbing down so I placed my hands on his back and let him climb down the book case after which he picked up the book along with some of the ones he likely brought to this section of the library and said “Uh, thanks. I’m just going to go now. If we meet again, never mention this.” to which I replied with “Whoa! Slow down mate, what’s with the rush? We haven’t even introduced ourselves to each other yet. I’m David Howard and that sure was a fun way of meeting you.”

While Simon was climbing down, he noticed the boy struggling to hold the book. That boy was weaker than he was! He didn't think it was that heavy. Ah well- at least there was someone out there weaker than he was that wasn't also four years younger than him. That was comforting.
Simon rubbed his eyes in exasperation when the boy referred to his situation as fun. Fun? How about embarrassing? Dangerous? What was this dude on? And David? He knew around twenty Davids. What a basic name. He also had an uncle David who was fairly rude about his height- one of those annoying Davids he knew.
"Hi, uh, Howard. I'm Simon Corbin." Simon said. He considered shaking David's hand, but questioned it. Some people didn't wash their hands after using the bathroom- he had no idea if this boy was one of them. "And fun? I wouldn't say that." he said, with an edge to his voice. He cleared his throat. Even though he wasn't a fan of this David person, he figured that being a jerk right off the bat might be a little too harsh. "So, what brings you to the library?" he said sweetly, putting his books in his bag. "I've just been trying to find a good read. Slow day today. Oh, wait- lemme just-"
Simon grabbed David's wrist and squirted hand sanitizer in his hand. "Just in case- there are diseases going around." He squirted some in his own hands. "Are you sick in any way?" He couldn't afford to get sick either. Simon was kind of a germaphobe.

The boy in front of me introduced himself as Simon Corbin and I quickly started repeating it in my mind to try and memorize it. ‘Simon Corbin, Simon Corbin, Simon Corbin...’ I really hoped I had time to memorize his before Simon said anything to distract me. “And fun? I wouldn’t say that.” Simon said after a few seconds. “Well of course you wouldn’t!” I exclaimed. “I wouldn’t either if I were you.” Simon cleared his throat, seemingly angry at what I said, but after a moment, he seemed to have cool down and asked “What brings you to the library? I’ve just been trying to find a good read. Slow day today. Oh, wait- lemme just-” After that, he swiftly grabbed my wrist and squirted some hand sanitizer into my hand. Whilst rubbing my hands to spread the hand sanitizer around, I said “Oh, I was reading about gargoyles from ‘An Introduction to History’ for my History of Magic homework.” It had also struck my curiosity as to why Simon gave me hand sanitizer so I decided to ask me about it. “And would you mind if I asked why you gave me hand sanitizer?” “Just in case there are diseases going around.” Simon answered as he rubbed some sanitizer in his own hands. “Are you sick in any way?” Simon clearly didn’t want to catch a disease so I decided to have a bit of fun and started taking sudden breaths, as if I was about to sneeze but instead of sneezing, I said “Kidding. I’m not sick in any way for your information. But the question is, are you?”

“Then why- oh, nevermind.” Simon mumbled. This was confusing, and he didn’t want to drag the conversation out any longer. He squirted some more hand sanitizer into his hands and rubbed them some more. His hands were getting dry because of the amount of hand sanitizer he was using. He'd have to ask his mum for more.
When the boy told him what he was doing, Simon groaned loudly. “That sounds booooring. I can think of much better ways to spend your time.” Simon tapped his chin. “Like stuffing snow down other people’s backs. That’s way more fun than History of Magic. Bleh!” Simon felt his fingers reach for the hand sanitizer in his pocket again, but he didn’t take it out. He didn’t want to seem obsessed.
On the other hand, why should he care? This was Howard- he wasn’t cool enough for Simon to be embarrassed about doing stuff around. He should be embarrassed for being around someone who was as lame as him.
When Simon asked him if he was sick, David began to gasp, which weirded Simon out until he realized that he was going to sneeze RIGHT ON HIM. What the heck?? Did this dude not know a little something called hygiene??? He was going to kill him with disease! Simon grabbed his hand sanitizer and got ready to squirt it at his face when he said “Kidding. I'm not sick in any way for your information. But the question is, are you?"
“Not funny!” Simon screeched angrily. “And I'm not sick, obviously. Or else I wouldn't be here infecting people.” He took several deep breaths to calm himself down. “You know what?”
He grabbed his bag and picked around for a moment before finding some pink glitter hand sanitizer. “Here, have it. You need it way more than I do.”
“Also, don't tell the librarian. I don’t want something as lame as climbing on shelves to be on my permanent record. I’d rather get in trouble for something better.” He stuffed his books in his bag, still annoyed with him about the sneezing thing.

“Not funny!” Simon screeched angrily as I backed away a bit, laughing as I did so. “No, not to a germaphobe. But I promise it won’t happen again.” I said, laughing a bit at how scared he was. The idea of someone being so scared to catch a disease was so hilarious to me, that I never missed the chance to make a germaphobe shit their pants once I found out. Too bad Simon was only the third one I had met which meant it was my third time doing this. “And I’m not sick, obviously. Or else I wouldn’t be here infecting people.” Simon said as he took several deep breaths to calm himself down. “You know what?” He grabbed his bag and fumbled around for a bit before taking out a container of some pink glitter hand sanitizer. “Here, have it. You need it way more than I do.” He said as he stretched his hand out, giving it to me. I took it and opened the container before dumping a bit of the sanitizer on my hand and closing the lid before setting the container down on the table. Whilst I was doing this, Simon said “Also, don’t tell the librarian. I don’t want something as lame as climbing on shelves to be on my permanent record. I’d rather get in trouble for something better.” “Oh you don’t have to worry about me, I’m not gonna tell the librarian anything.” I then put my hand close to my nose, and took a deep breath, sniffing the hand sanitizer before breathing out and saying in a sarcastic voice: “Wow, now this smells like some choice hand sanitizer fit for the rich and famous so it was indeed generous of you to give it to me but I much prefer normal hand sanitizer which is why you can have this back. Unless you think I’ve already possessed it with all of the nasty bacteria coming from my mouth.”“That sounds boring.” Simon said, stretching’s the ‘o’ in ‘boring’ after I told him what I was doing in the library. “I can think of much better ways to spend your time.” Simon said as he tapped his chin. “Like stuffing snow down other people’s backs. That’s way more fun than History of Magic. Bleh!” “Well of course it’s boring, I don’t like it either. But I don’t want to get a bad grade, you know?” I replied.

“Well of course it’s boring, I don’t like it either. But I don’t want to get a bad grade, you know?”
"Understandable," Simon replied, drawing imaginary patterns on the table. "But still boring." He yawned to show emphasis. Classes were always boring to him, even as the 'good student' he was.
"Good! You are so sadistic." he snapped. "Or else i might have to resort to a restraining order." This dude was going to kill him someday and he knew it. Did he go around pretending to cough on people all the time? What a freak. "And it's not funny, especially since you knew i was going to be scared. That's rude."
"You better not, I swear to god." Simon hissed. He watched as David put his hands close to his nose (Ewwwwwww) and sniffed the hand sanitizer.
“Wow, now this smells like some choice hand sanitizer fit for the rich and famous, so it was indeed generous of you to give it to me, but I much prefer normal hand sanitizer which is why you can have this back. Unless you think I’ve already possessed it with all of the nasty bacteria coming from my mouth.”
Simon rolled his eyes. Hand sanitizer is hand sanitizer! Why did he give a fuck how it smelt? It still got rid of germs the same way. "Y'know what? You can keep it. You probably did infect it with some nasty disease. Toss it away if you want. Bye." Simon snapped, and stormed out of the library, the book he had gotten tucked under one arm, squirting hand sanitizer into his hands as he left. He made a mental note not to climb any more shelves and ask the librarian to get it, lest he met any more idiots who probably didn't even wash their hands properly.

Simon rolled his eyes clearly unhappy with what I just said. “Y’know what? You can keep it. You probably did infect it with some nasty disease. Toss it away if you want. Bye.” And with those words, Simon left the library with the book he had gotten under his arm. Of course, it wasn’t as heavy when it wasn’t falling at you at twenty miles per hour. Toss it away? No way! I always kept the stuff I received from people so that in a few years time, I could brag to them about how I still had it. For example, I kept the 20 pence my friend Brian once found at school and later gave to me or the torn 4 of spades my younger brother Matthew found at my uncle’s house that he was going to throw away before I asked if I could have it. But here’s the thing, most of the people I got junk from probably forgot about it in some time so they didn’t even remember giving me the item. I mean, when I showed Brian the pence, it took him half a minute to remember when he found the coin. Not that I counted but that’s a fairly reasonable estimate. But back in the present, as I watched Simon leave the library and out of sight behind the door, I put the hand sanitizer into the pocket of my jacket and sat back at the table I was studying at and started reading again. Sooner or later, someday I would meet the Simon again. Hopefully sooner, but if it’s around the time we graduate Hogwarts, I won’t waste the opportunity to tell him about the pink glitter hand sanitizer he gave me a few years back. But then again, if we met later this year, I’d bet a hundred pounds that he wouldn’t be happy to see me.
David has left the thread.
