Running late for the Fairies!
Tuesday 22nd December 2021
Lily was walking in the corridors, her arms full of all kinds of materials and decorations. She was running late and now she wondered why on earth she'd agreed to take care of two fairies and create a display for them to be admired. She even had to postpone her return home for the Christmas holidays. At least she'd found a way to keep them quiet and not complaining. Since she didn't know the Shrinking Charm yet, she'd used the letter she'd sent to her family warning that she would be back a few days later than planned to ask her grandma to send her two tiny little miniature mirrors. "Best idea I ever had" she thought, quite proud of herself. She'd recieved them by owl last week and ever since she'd given them to the fairies, both of them had been so obsessed with their reflections in the little mirrors that they'd stopped giggling and laughing in their high-pitched buzzing voice that had started to drive Lily crazy. Then she had locked them in a small box - made of glass so that they would not feel trapped - and she had left them safely in her room. To be honest, Lily wasn't sure if they had even noticed being locked in since they couldn't get their eyes off their new mirrors.

Meanwhile, the Ravenclaw First Year student had been rushing around the castle all morning, skipping breakfast even, to gather the last elements she needed for her forest-like display. Now she was carrying tiny pine trees, tiny baubles, tiny glitter garlands, tiny candles, tiny paper animals and a bag full of snow and enchanted snowflakes. All she had left to do was to go back to her dorm to pick up the fairies and their homemade little hut. She had been building the cute tiny cottage over the last few days and it was supposed to be the main piece of her forest display. The rest of it would be a classic snowy, somewhat Christmassy, forest with snowflakes flying around the little house and fairy lights garlands hanging on the pine trees. Once she'd come up with all her ideas for the display, she'd thought long and hard about the best place to put it. She had finally decided to place it in the corridor overlooking the Great Hall, where the most students would be able to see it.
Lily hoped the fairies would like the display she'd made. Even though they had been annoying her sometimes, she'd actually grew quite fond of them during the couple of weeks she'd had to take care of them. The two fairies were carbon copies, two females of up to four inches with transparent wings and a tiny humanlike body. Their only distinction was the colour of their bodies and Lily had named them accordingly: Rose for the pinkest and Violette for the purple one. At first, the Ravenclaw girl had been shocked by how conceited these little creatures were but now she found it rather amusing to watch them look at their reflection in the little mirrors all day. And she had to admit, they really were pretty. She understood now why wizards used fairies as decorations. They were truly stunning to look at, and she hoped her fellow Hogwarts students would feel the same while looking at all the fairy displays. "I just wish someone would help me take care of them" Lily was thinking while walking in the corridors.
Doing all by herself and during the last week before the holidays, had been quite exhausting. Besides, Lily would barely have time to set up the display before going to pick up her suitcase and taking the Hogwarts Express back home. She was kinda bumped she wouldn't have time to walk around the castle, looking for the displays the other students had made. She'd even considered staying in the castle for the holidays but as a First Year, she really missed home and her family and she couldn't bare the idea of not seeing them for another couple of months. So she hoped the fairies would still be around by the time she returned to Hogwarts in January.
Lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice that she was reaching a corner and she bumped into a fellow Ravenclaw student. But she couldn't recognise her classmate since the mountain of decorations in her arms flew into the air before scattering on the corridor floor. Lily opened her eyes wide, more surprised than annoyed, and realised that she'd just arrived in the hallway leading to the Great Hall. "I'm so sorry", she started apologizing to the girl. She'd seen her before at their house table or in the common room but she didn't know her, "I.. I was completely lost in thought, and perhaps a little too loaded..." she added, looking at all her materials scattered on the floor with an apologetic look. "It's for the fairy display..." she felt like she had to explain, "hum.. the fairies are still in my dorm".
