Sisterly Space Solo Complete

Back Date: November 12th, 2021

Sitting crossed legged on a bench in the courtyard on a Friday evening was Adlai’s typically after class activity this year. After all this is when she got to see Dorothy and when Dafina would be passed onto her to take care of for the following school week. Dafina was a funny little thing, when they first met her she only knew how to say one word. “Hideous.” The memory made Adlai smile.

Of course Dorothy didn’t know that Dafina was saying that. There were times where Adlai did wish that Dorothy could understand Dafina, especially when Adlai would return to her dorm room with the snake in hand and they would tell her all of the amazing accomplishments Dorothy had made that week Dafina was with her, whether it was a new friends or a good grade on a test. Part of her also wanted Dorothy to tell her these things herself, to open up to her just a little.

Perhaps thats why she asked to many questions when she was with Dorothy. Perhaps that’s also why she hung onto every detail about Dorothy’s life when she was told about it. Such as if Dorothy had a test coming up, she’d remind her about it or if Dorothy seemed interested in a school event Adlai would tell her to go. Most of the time Adlai knew that Dorothy wasn’t going to listen to her, but nonetheless she waited and waited on that courtyard bench for her baby sister.

“Hey.” She heard behind her. Turning around she found the owner of the voice, the very person she was expecting. “Hey!” She said back. “I think Dafina is ready for you, she’s been really squirmy ever since this morning.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, I don’t think she likes me very much.”
Adlai gave Dorothy a shocked face after what she said. “No! Dafina adores you, your all she really talks about!” She exclaimed. “And you know this because you can talk to snakes.”
“Yes. I know that because I can talk to snakes.”
“That’s really weird to say out loud.” Dorothy whispered to the older girl. “Yeah, I know.” Adlai whispered back.

“So… I guess I’ll see you around.” Dorothy said causing for Adlai’s eyebrows to rise, “Why do you have plans?” “No.” She answered. “So where are you going? Just back to your dorm?”
“I guess so.”
“Then why not hang around some more?”
“I don’t know, I just don’t feel like it.”
“How come?”
“I don’t know, can you drop it please. It’s so annoying.”

“Annoying?” Adlai repeated, as she assessed Dorothy’s mannerisms. Her eyebrows where knitted close together in a frown and her arms were crossed. “Yes, Adlai. Annoying. This whole asking sixteen to many questions when I’m with you is very annoying. At first it was reasonable, I was in a new place with an entirely new environment and people then you just seemed to be acting like mom which bearable, but now its just suffocating! I can’t take two steps without you trailing behind me asking if I’m okay!”

She stared blankly at Dorothy, “I’m sorry.” she said, not knowing what else to say. “Maybe I wouldn't be like this though if you would let me in? I wouldn't ask "sixteen to many questions" if you'd tell what's going on in your life!" Her voice was raised and tense. "What happens in my life is none of your business!" Dorothy snapped back at her.

"Yes it is Dorothy, because I am your sister whether you like it or not."
"Well right now I wish you weren't!" Dorothy stared back at Adlai, who thought a few mere words could never hurt her as much as the ones just said did now. "You don't mean that Dory." She said as angry tears began to well up in her eyes, her neck beginning to feel hot.

"Maybe I do." Dorothy said placing Dafina and her enclosure onto the ground between them. "Take your snake and leave me alone, ok?" Adlai then watched as her baby sister then turned around and walked away.

She had never felt so dejected in her entire life. She wanted to cry, she was crying. She was acting like a child, she is a child. Wiping her face she picked up Dafina in her enclosure and began to walk in the opposite direction. Dafina said nothing.
