"The curse is finally over and not a day too soon," Hess commented. "Victoria said he has perhaps a few more days." The dark curse that had plagued Vladimir for years, his mark of shame for the transgressions of his youth. Vladimir was for from innocent, even if his intentions were fair. The fault was something the Gryffindor still laid at his cousin's feet. He resented him for harboring a curse that had harmed so many, for keeping as many secrets as he did and for not placing his trust in him. If he knew, he would have tried. If Thaddeus knew sooner, this curse might not have taken so many years.

He would be writing this letter to Uncle Thaddeus with great gratitude towards Nurse Brumby. A cure had been not only discovered but it worked well, it did not ravage the body and the afflicted with cleansed of the obtrusive darkness that had hardened his vessels and now gripped his lungs and heart in its steely grip.

"Mathias, you did not need to come," the Lion reminded the underclassman. Pride had insisted on serving as a sort of 'company' for him. A reminder that someone or something had attacked their cousin in this same Owlery last year. While Vladimir was ailing from his curse, he had grown tall and had somehow gotten strong. He claimed that it was just hard work and maybe good genes, that the curse "was not so bad" but he always knew that at the very least the last was a lie.

"It still might be too late," Mathis commented. "I heard that he was brought to St. Mungos the other day," he added. It was cold in the Owlery, he was wearing a heavy wool jacket over his school clothes and rubbing his hands together. "Did you bring lunch?" He offered as he dropped satchel of trailmix on the table in front of his cousin.

"My girlfriend will probably be looking for me soon," he warned. "So I do not have much time," he placed a thermos on the table next to the trail mix. "I know you don't eat the food either," he budged the thermos and it teetered but did not fall. The house elves tainted the food after 'terrible incidents' with something intended to make the children forget. It was a faint sprinkle, a pinch to a great pot of stew or a dusting over a plate of spiced beans. Enough to not wholly forget what happened, but enough to leave them in a fog. To make the nightmares a little less dark, the fear a bit less relevant. "Best to keep your wits about you, can't work right when hungry."

"Mathias, you did not need to come."

Mathias had no loyalty in particular towards Jürgen Hess and even less towards his cousin Vladimir. Vladimir was their heir apparent, first born, favored son of the clan patriarch Thaddeus Athanatos. His skillset, a 'once in a generation', perhaps twice event. A rare, natural legilimens. His seat was assured, while his half-brother was his bastard heir the entire family knew him to be bloody mad. The youngest was born just this past year, another pureblood but 'not their kind.' Victoria was a beautiful woman to gaze upon with her snow white hair and piercing gaze, yet there was something eerie about her. She was not a legilimens nor was she a Seer, but if he were to place a bet himself he would think she was hiding something. Their child would never come to age if the youth was unfortunate enough as to find Thaddeus' favor.

There were so many reasons to doubt Mathias. He questioned his relationship with Winnie Harper, he knew that there was something off between them during that picnic incident. A fact that he might have caught onto had he not been distracted by Aurora. In truth he was a simple man, pretty girl could easily turn his head but what held his attention was the fact that she screamed like a shrew. He was no masochist and he could not respect her shrees, her reckless disregard for safety, decorum and basic human interaction. She was like a well waxed simian capable of rudimentary human speech.

He should not have taken the drink, but he was thoughtless. His stomach pained him as it often did, a fact that accounted for his lanky appearance - he never ate his fill. Having brought what he would eat, he often rationed what he had. "Thanks," he said automatically as he unscrewed the cap and served himself a drink. The sweet liquid felt good on his parched lips, try throat and tongue. It tasted a bit off, he should have stopped. He knew better than to trust Pride, the boy with a agenda. Yet he drank his fill, a greedy moment of consumption that if he could remember he would regret.
