Flying Recreationally
Today marked Aaron's seventh month without flying recreationally. He'd quit Quidditch back in May after the championship match, and had refrained from flying through June. Then he was back in the muggle world for July and August. When September came around and it was time to come back to Hogwarts, he had stubbornly decided to leave his broom at home. He wouldn't have a need for it now that he was no longer on the team. He was slightly regretting the decision to not bring his Moontrimmer - he really really missed being in the air - but he refused to admit that to anyone. Not even to himself.Wednesday | 1 December 2021 | after classes
After classes, Aaron found his feet wandering the grounds like usual. He had spent much of November developing a new hobby. Freerunning, parkour. It had actually been helping him feel that same sense of weightlessness that usually came from flying - running across the grounds and jumping over obstacles kept the wind in his face and his mind off his troubles. But today felt a bit different. He wasn't up to running today, just walking. He wasn't paying attention to just how far he was walking from the castle, and when he finally realized where he was headed, he made a conscious decision to keep going.
As the Hufflepuff approached the training pitch, there was at least one person up in the air. The sight made his lips turn up a little bit, and he took a seat at the edge of the marked area. His brown eyes followed the figure flying through the air - they were too far for him to recognize at the moment - and he found himself yearning to be in their place. But no, that would be undoing all the hard work he had done to distance himself from Quidditch.. right?
When the flier he was watching came a little lower to the ground, Aaron realized that she was familiar to him. Ileen Knight, a fellow third year, but she was in Slytherin. They had done a few errands together, and he considered her a friend. Not a close friend considering they did not hang out regularly, but definitely a friend! She was nice. He did not know that she flew though, considering she was not on her house's Quidditch team. In fact, he was fairly sure she was on the duelling team. Did she solely fly recreationally then?
It looked like he was about to find out, because she was flying closer to him. Had she recognized him sitting there on the sidelines?

Aaron has a Calming Presence.Your presence simply puts others at ease, if it is your carefree personality or the trust others have in you, the result is still the same. With you there, perhaps through your encouragement, your allies are able to better focus.

Flying Recreationally
Ileen closed her eyes briefly and enjoyed the icy air that whipped into her face and drove the feeling from her cheeks and nose. Slow as a hawk, she circled the Quidditch pitch, free as a bird in the air.
The young Slytherin had always sought the highest places when she wasn't feeling well. Putting distance between herself and the ground helped her to temporarily escape her problems, to catch a fleeting feeling of freedom and detachment. In her first year, she had climbed a tower more than once and her good friend Aida had taken her on her broom. She had seen Hogwarts from above and had always been able to tear herself away.
But when she had had the chance, she had bought her own broom. Now she was even more independent and when she needed to think or get her thoughts in order, she got out her beautiful silver arrow and did laps out here.
It was freezing cold and not training time, so she was alone. She had her Slytherin scarf wrapped tightly around her neck and despite the gloves, she was gradually starting to not feel her fingers. Her dark brown hair was a mess - she had been flying around here for a while and the wind had destroyed anything that might have once been a hairstyle.
As always before Christmas, she escaped outside because she had to think of her parents. Her parents, who were in another country, who didn't want her there, who had torn her from her home, who had lied to her.
The bitterness felt overwhelming and at the same time she missed them so much that it hurt. She had never seen her father or her mother even once in the last few years. And now she was here, far up in the air, trying to shake off the paralyzing feeling of helplessness.
A soft sniffle escaped her and she bit her lips furiously. Her eyes roamed over the lands as she fought down the surging emotions. How long had she been here? Probably an hour. Maybe it was time to go back?
She turned to the castle that loomed large against the gray horizon and a soft smile appeared on her face. This was her home. Why was she grieving over the past?
With a sigh, she slowly glided over to the stands. The broom reacted to the slightest movement and turned in a gentle curve.
Then her dark eyes fell on a figure sitting there that Ileen had not noticed before. At first she felt a little uneasy - but what did she care if someone had been watching her? After all, she had done nothing forbidden.
Curious, she steered her broom further in the direction until she recognized the boy who was squatting there and looking up at her thoughtfully. Wasn't that Aaron?
Ileen liked the Hufflepuff, even though they hadn't had much to do with each other. They had done a few errands together and it was always nice with him. She usually felt very comfortable around him. That was also the reason why she decided to fly closer, despite her troubled feelings.
An attentive observer would notice the redness of her cheeks and the suspicious glint in her eyes - either she had been upset or the icy air had caused it.
With an elegant serpentine, Ileen glided over to the boy and landed light-footed beside him. "Hey Aaron, what are you doing here?" Stupid question, actually. Wasn't he a Quidditch player himself? Ileen wasn't quite sure, since she didn't actively follow the sport.

"Hey, Ileen," Aaron said, getting to his feet as she got closer. She landed near him quite nicely, and he wore a smile on his face as she asked why he was there. "I was just walking and uh," he hesitated, realizing he really didn't know what exactly had drawn him here. Well, he knew, but he hadn't said it out loud, even to himself. "Well, I just thought I'd come see if anyone I knew was flying. And here you are!" He did notice the way her cheeks were red and the glint in her eye, but the clueless boy just thought it was from the cold.
Aaron's brown eyes went to the broom that Ileen had been riding, and he recognized it well enough. "Oh, cool, is that a Silver Arrow? I hear they're a really nice ride. I've never ridden anything newer than my Moontrimmer, but I know lots of Quidditch players have those," he commented, his fingers wiggling a little at his side. He wanted to ask if he could see it, ride it, but he was resisting the urge. His brown eyes raised back to hers, once again catching the glint in her eye.
"How are you doing?" he asked. Not for any particular reason, but because it was something you do - asking how people are doing when you see them. He didn't expect her to launch into anything other than maybe telling him about her day, or maybe even just being the sort who just says "good" and asks the same in return. He wasn't sure, since they didn't talk one-on-one very much.

Flying Recreationally
Ileen dismounted her new broom and held it awkwardly in her hand, not sure if it was the right moment to sit with Aaron or if he rather wanted her to leave again. She noticed the hesitation before he provided a reason for his presence. Well, she couldn’t and wouldn’t judge him. She herself had come here many times without a broom or even the slightest interest in Quidditch or… people. But the openness of the pitch and the possibility to climb up the poles had always drawn her here.
So, she nodded along as he spoke, a soft smile on her lips. Not everyone was weird as she was. He most likely told the truth and who was she to request an explanation anyway? Even if he had different motivations, she wouldn’t blame him. “Yeah, here I am.” She chuckled and decided to finally take a seat next to him. Her eyes were fixed on him and she wrinkled her forehead as she tried to remember if he was a quidditch player or not. But she was scared to ask and thus showed her lack of interest in Quidditch. She just came here to fly for fun or escape problems - what kind of reasoning was that? Her cheeks flushed in anticipated embarrassment.
But of course, since they were on the Quidditch pitch, they ended up with that topic. The young Slytherin gently stroked the broom that she had placed on her lap and her shy smile deepend. “Yeah. I saved up my money to buy this. I like how it feels when you ride it. So smooth and fast.” She brushed aside the comment that it was a good broom for Quidditch. She had no interest in the sport and probably the boy thought that she trainerite to be included in the house team. But her reason for being here was quite different. She was so accustomed to the judgment of her classmates that she often chose to keep quiet about her true motivation.
She was so caught up in her own problems and struggle, that she totally missed his reaction. But it didn’t stop her from offering it anyway. Flying was fun and sharing it with people she liked was even more fun. Making someone happy would definitely help her to forget about her sorrow.
“I never tried a Moontrimmer. But here is your chance for the Silver Arrow. Do you want to ride it?” With a deep smile she offered her broom to the boy.
As he asked her how she was doing, her smile faltered but she forced it back on her face. “I am okay, I guess. Normal christmas blues. I miss my family. I haven’t seen them in over two years.” Yeah, that was a good way to sum it up for now. She had told him that she had lived in New Zealand. She liked Aaron and something about his vibe made her tell the truth without going into depth tho.
Was he humbled too? Was this why he was here? “How about you?”
Biting her own lip to stop talking, she shook her head. “I don’t want to keep you. The ride on a Silver Arrow is something you don’t postpone!” She looked stern in a joking manner and jumped to her feet, offering her hand to pull the boy up. She would leave the decision to him if he wanted to ride alone or with her. She would be okay with both.

Flying Recreationally
"I need to get better at saving up," Aaron said after Ileen explained she had saved money in order to get her Silver Arrow. He was not the wisest spender, especially now that - being a third year - he could take weekend trips to Hogsmeade. His money lately went towards prank items at Zonko's or sweets from Honeydukes. He had no need to save for another broom anyway. He was done with flying- or at least, that's what he had been telling himself for a few months now. But as Ileen offered him the chance to ride her broom, Aaron's heartstrings were tugged back towards his love of flying. But no - he didn't love flying anymore. That's why he quit Quidditch.
"I shouldn't," Aaron said, unable to keep a twinge of reluctance out of his voice. "I, uh, don't really fly anymore. I'm not doing Quidditch this year," he explained with a shrug, avoiding eye contact and looking down at the ground from his seated position. "And I'm probably rusty, so I shouldn't risk your broom," he added, looking up again when she offered her hand. He offered a small smile and accepted, getting to his feet with her help.
"You haven't seen your family in two years?" Aaron repeated, his head tilting slightly in confusion. Yes he knew that her family lived in New Zealand, but he didn't know that she didn't go home to them during the breaks. "Are you gonna go home for the upcoming Christmas break then?" he wondered. When she turned the question on him, he shrugged. "I'm doing pretty okay, been pretty busy - schoolwork feels like it's piling up a bit, but it should be fine. Jack and I've been keeping busy outside of schoolwork too, I'm learning a lot about pranking," he said, chuckling at his last comment. Jack and their pranks were one of the few things that were fun during the last few months, along with his newfound hobby of parkour - which was taking flying's place, though it still didn't fulfill him quite as much as being in the air.
