I was mid-sentence when a Gryffindor student walked up to me.
"Hi there. My name is Allison. I am a first-year Gryffindor student. You look like you could use a study buddy/a friend. I've seen you around the school before but I never properly introduced myself," she said.
I beamed at Allison. Looks like I've found myself a friend. Well, she found me, really.
"Hey! My name is Ebony, and I'm from Ravenclaw. I've seen you around too, although I'm not really that familiar with you. It would be great to know you. Oh, and pleasure to meet you," I replied, smiling. I put down my quill, hastily packing up my homework and supplies so that I could get to know this girl, Allison, better.
A sound of packing and rustling filled the uncomfortable silence. The rows and rows of books and the librarian were the only things and people present apart from us, and none were making sound. Barely anyone came to the library at this hour; they were all either hanging out in the Common Room or doing there own stuff. Oftentimes, I would be alone here, and that's when I felt the rare desire for friendship.
"So," I said, trying to start a conversation, "what do you usually like to do?"

"That's cool," I replied, "me, I like to write stories, read, and make art in my dorm room. Sometimes I also enjoy doing homework if it's fun or interesting. But this is obviously not fun OR interesting. Oh, and I'm excited for the school term too!" I indicated to the essay I was doing that now lay on top of my open satchel.
Then, I noticed Allison was looking at something. Her hand moved to brush off some dust. I followed her gaze; she was looking at the lined of shelves of books. Like usual, the many books were so covered in dust; probably the result of nobody really taking the books out.
"A bit dusty here isn't it?" I giggled, "Oh, and I have another question; do you play Wizarding Chess?" I asked Allison.
Waiting for her reply, I tried to take in the features of my newly-made friend. She had beautiful long blonde hair, a diamond face like many other pretty girls, fair rosy lips, and crystal clear and piercing blue eyes. She reminded me with a pang of sadness of my mother, who had the same long blonde hair. At that moment, I started to miss home, and mom and dad.

"It is a bit dusty in here. I sometimes feel bad for the books that sit on the shelves and collect dust and don't have the chance to be read," Allison said. I nodded in agreement. "I know, right! I set this personal goal the first time I came into the library to read all the books on these shelves, but so far I've only read 2 shelves- so far away from my goal," I replied, laughing slightly.
I noticed Allison looking at my essay and smiled inwardly. Such a smart girl as herself would probably think my use of words were too simple.
"I have never played wizarding chess before in my life. I have played the muggle version of it but not the wizard version of it but I'm willing to learn!" Allison continued, as answer to my question.
"Oh, are you from a Muggle family?" I asked, curious, "I've always wondered how you all manage it, it must be so much to take in, all the magic, spells, information... I come from a magical family myself, and I still find all the magic and incantations and potions that we learn overwhelming. But of course, you must be a clever witch."
"Oh, and about the wizard chess, would you like to play sometime? I would be more than willing to teach you," I said, replying to Allison's previous comment.

"Yes, I am a muggle-born. I didn't discover my magical abilities until I turned 10 I believe. It's not easy living in a muggle household because I know we aren't allowed to perform magic outside of Hogwarts especially with how old we are and I take my academics very seriously. Wizards in a magical household must be able to have it easier than me because they can use simple charms to help with household tasks but I could be wrong," Allison said. I laughed, even though I knew Allison wouldn't find it funny.
"Not all wizards and witches have a knack for household spells, actually. And my mom and dad definitely didn't; they couldn't do a simple packing spell! I suppose they do know how to charm things to do stuff for them, though, like when they're cooking,"I replied.
I found that Allison was getting easier and easier to talk to; even though we weren't very similar, I felt she was already being such a good friend just by keeping me company in the time I usually spent alone.
I suddenly realised Allison might not be comfortable talking to me about her family. After all, I was just a Ravenclaw stranger that she just met today.
I bit my lip as the beginning of an uncomfortable silence began.
"... Are you okay with us talking about your family?" I asked awkwardly, not wanting to meet her eye.
Of course, I was going to mess up. I was going to blow my chance to make a new friend. Me and my st*pid mouth.
