Lizzy walked into the study room at Hogwarts for about the eighth time this week alone. The Gryffindor Common Room was amazing, but it always seemed to be too loud to concentrate. This made it impossible for her to get her homework done in there. Hogwarts was grander than anything she had known back home. Lizzy had started off on the usual path to the study room that day, and then almost immediately got lost. The staircase had moved, leaving her with no other choice but to go the new direction. She had never been that way before, and eventually she turned up near the staff room. One of the passing prefects was kind enough to point her in the right direction. Lizzy hoped that finding her way from place to place would get easier over the next few months.

Lizzy found an empty table and sat down, pulling her homework out of her bag. It was an essay for History of Magic. When she lived in the muggle world, she did fine in social studies. Now, in the wizarding world, she was suffering through History of Magic. Lizzy had always prided herself on being a good student, so this was a knife through the heart to her.

Lizzy dipped her quill into the ink pot on the table. The quill hovered above the paper as she tried to remember the names and dates of the previous lesson. Finally, she took her notes out and spread them out around her. Even her notes made absolutely no sense. She tried to look at it from a different angle, as if she were one of the wizards in the lesson. It made no more sense than it had when she was simply going through her notes. She sat back in the chair with a sigh. How would she explain it to Professor Zahid that she had paid attention to his lecture, but didn’t understand a word of it?

Maybe someone here would be able to help her, but Lizzy wasn’t able to ask for help. She had never been good at admitting she couldn’t do something. She sat back up and dipped her quill in the ink once more. Even if she didn’t understand it perfectly, that didn’t mean she couldn’t try. Lizzy would write her essay and see where that got her. If she liked how it sounded she’d obviously picked up something from the lesson. If she didn’t like it, she’d rewrite it until it was perfect.

Serena walked into the Study Room. She had wanted to complete her Charms homework in the Hufflepuff Common Room, but there were a bunch of loud, rambunctious students who were just making it too difficult to concentrate. So, Serena reluctantly decided to leave the Common Room and find another place to study.

At first, she thought about going to the Library, but thought that that environment might be too quiet for her. While Serena didn’t like super loud environments, she preferred some noise instead of complete silence while she worked. So, the third year thought that the perfect compromise would be going to the Study Room.

Once Serena arrived at the Study Room, she chose an empty table and sat down. She pulled out her Charms homework, Charms textbook, and quill and parchment. Right as she was about to finally get started on her homework, she noticed a girl at a nearby table. The girl seemed to be younger than Serena. She noticed that the other girl seemed to be struggling with her own homework. From here, it looked to be for History of Magic. Ah, that class was an interesting one. Serena had ended up enjoying it in the end, but in the beginning it was definitely rough at first, having to memorize all those names and dates.

Serena debated on if she should offer her help. While she wouldn't give the first year any answers, she always thought that helping people with their schoolwork would be better in the long run for understanding the material. But, Serena did not know this girl at all. She wasn't even sure what house she was in. The younger girl might not need any help at all or might be embarrassed that Serena noticed that she was struggling. Still, the third year just couldn't sit there when someone needed help, and she might be able to provide some.

Maybe she would simply approach the girl, say hello, and see how well she was received and go from there? Yes, that would probably work. So, Serena gathered her things and walked up to the girl.

"Hi, my name's Serena! What's yours?" Serena greeted with a smile. Hopefully, this was the right approach.

After sitting there for a few more minutes with her quill poised above the parchment, but still not writing anything, Lizzy sat back in her chair with a resigned sigh. Lizzy reached for her notes once more, there had to be something that she was missing. She refused to admit that she really had no clue as to how to start her essay, or how to finish, or how to do any of it in general! Grabbing her quill again after careful examination of her notes, Lizzy felt a bit better about it. Perhaps all she needed was the review. Touching her quill to the parchment lightly, she thought hard about how to start and got... nothing. Apparently, the review had not helped in the slightest.

That's when Lizzy noticed a girl in Hufflepuff robes get up from her table and walk over to Lizzy. She introduced herself as Serena, and seemed very friendly. Lizzy smiled back, but a small voice in the back of her head nagged at her. What if Serena had noticed that Lizzy was struggling with her essay and that's why she came over? She could feel embarrassment creep up on her.

"Hi!" Lizzy said. She had convinced herself that she was just being paranoid, it couldn't be that obvious that she was having a difficult time. "I'm Lizzy, Lizzy Solace." No matter how hard she racked her brain, she did not remember seeing Serena around the castle anywhere. "I haven't seen you around Hogwarts, but that could just be that I'm still relatively new." Then, on further reflection she added, "Or maybe my head was just in a book." That could have definitely been the case. Lizzy loved to go on adventures in the forest she had lived next to, but the forest here was forbidden to enter, so she turned to her next favorite thing to do: read.

Reading to her was almost like diving in to whole new, undiscovered worlds. Lizzy could imagine herself going on the adventures with the characters. For so many years when she was younger, she had wished that she would be able to transport herself into a book. Coming to Hogwarts was like making that dream come true. Now that she was thinking about it though, maybe there was a way to magic herself into books here. Coming to Hogwarts also taught her that she shouldn't be too quick to discount something as false.
