It was another still day for the rabbit-masked boy. Lunch had arrived to interrupt the day's classes, and Selim had gone to the great hall for it like everyone else. Unlike everyone else, he only went there to grab some food and drinks before immediately leaving and wandering to the courtyard.

There, he set up his own tea time in solitude. Spreading a grey blanket across the dried autumn leaves, he placed down the warm biscuits and dumplings he snatched from the Slytherin tables, then lowered the kettle of hot water beside them. He then set up three of his chipped and worn teacups, one for the puppet who never drank it, one for the cat that actually drank tea when it lowered to a manageable temperature, and one for himself. He placed the teabags in each, the blends coming from his birth family's tea company, and filled the cups up with hot water to let the herbs and spices seep.

Then he settled down, pulling the hood of his baggy grey jacket up over his head and pulling Aku off his scarred hand to place him by his tea. Then he cupped his own in his pale hands, looking over the scenery of the courtyard.

Hogwarts was a deceptively beautiful place for being such a deathtrap, really. The nights always held a haunting majesty to them, the days were almost always cinematic in one way or another, be it with an overcast sky or a clear one. Each season was always snapped perfectly into one picture around them, and fall was not one to be left out of that.

The willow tree he sat under was orange, its leaves floating gently in the wind to mingle with the rest of them that drifted from the few other trees there. The frosted ground was just beginning to thaw, bringing with it the earthy scent of decaying plants and dew. The sky was overcast, beams of sunlight breaking through the gaps in the sheets of grey, giving everything an ethereal feel. To finish the scene off, the weathered walls of the brick and mortar school contained the complete autumn vibe in one spot.

Why would he pass this up for sitting in an antechamber-like room full of unknown faces and noisy children? The cacophony of their voices was always overwhelming, and he always felt a creeping sense of being watched whenever he lingered there for too long. No, this peace was very much preferred over such unruly chaos, which is why he always spent his meals in the courtyard, no matter the weather.

(Admittedly he had caught a chill more than a few times whenever it was raining or snowing out, but that was beside the point.)

Outside, time almost seemed to stand still for him, as if he had found his own peaceful bubble whenever he left the confines of classes and school to admire nature. Sometimes it was jarring stepping from the faced-paced rate of Hogwarts into the almost-stilled time of the world as a whole. It was like looking from inside a confined box to a vast open space with seemingly no walls or ceilings. It often made him realize just how meaningless he was to the rest of life, an insignificant dot on a radar that stretched far beyond his line of sight.

Hogwarts was defenceless in the face of time, inevitably it would end, and everything else would move on, undisturbed, pace relentless, leaving it far behind in a faint memory.

A calming thought.

Kioshi let out a meow, snapping him out of his trance, and he smiled slightly, reaching out his mottled left hand to stroke the dark feline's plush pelt. The cat began to purr, rubbing against his palm, and for a moment, he felt content, even happy, in his solitude.

"At least you'll never change how you act around me, as long as I care for you you'll love me. Humans are so finicky compared to animals..." The boy murmured, feeling a moment of sadness as he remembered that Kioshi had been a gift from his big brother... was he ok? Had father lashed out against him? Was he even alive?

For a moment he stilled, lowering his hand back onto his lap. Placing his tea down he propped his elbows onto his knees, burying his masked visage in his palms. His vision was watering... how troublesome.

The boy took a few deep breaths trying to calm himself and his slightly trembling frame. His attempts to seek reprieve from his own mind were met with failure once more. The questions, the concerns, the ever-lingering confusion of his displaced life, they all returned inevitably.

He snapped out of the downward spiral when he heard the lapping of liquid. Blinking his eyes clear he saw his feline companion drinking from his teacup... instead of the one he placed for him.

He let out a choked laugh, the burst of amusement contrasting his churning emotions starkly enough to make him do so. Reaching his hand out once more he stroked Kioshi, we began purring while drinking the tea that was not his, the combination making the purring distorted funnily.

Selim chuckled again. At least he had Kioshi... the cat always somehow managed to help him in his slumps, as if a piece of his brother was always with him, secretly making fun of his life in that same old brotherly fashion.

It was nice, a piece of positivity in his unstable world.

Dan happily walked with his kitty. Loki was content, and he finished lunch early. So, there was really no reason to stay in the Great Hall except to socialize. And... the amount of actual social people in Hogwarts were staggeringly low, when the population of the school was kept in mind.
So, with nothing to do, Dan decided to have a walk, perpetually bare feet silently stepping across the the stone as he did.
Loki followed close behind his master's heels as he walked, delighted to have a walk with Dan.

Eventually, they came to the courtyard. A truly beautiful place, like an oasis of calm in the chaos that is normal Hogwarts. There was a bit of a chill, but Dan didn't mind. The cold never bothered him anyway.

But, to his surprise, there was someone else there. It didnt take Dan long to figure out who.
Selim Faust was sitting in the courtyard, seemingly having a tea party with his kitty and a plushie.
Dan knew Selim liked tea, everyone in Slytherin knew that. But... Dan didn't take Selim for the tea party type.
Though he knew Selim didn't much care for lots of people, he felt like he could use a bit of company. And Dan had been wanting to get to know Selim better anyway; this was just a convenient excuse to do so. No one around, no one to bother them.

Dan walked up to Selim and smiled.

"Afternoon, Selim. Are ya well?"

Selim wasn't one to be caught off-guard. His hindered field of vision made his other senses rather hyper-aware, something only heightened by his constant lingering paranoia. So, he heard the light crunching of leaves, the approaching of someone else.

For a moment he froze, then slowly looked over at the source of the disturbance, when it spoke to him. Standing there was a slightly short-statured boy he recognized well enough from their very few encounters, the most recent being the event in the common room a month or so ago.

The rabbit-masked boy tilted his head, as if contemplating how to go about the situation. The smile on the other boy's face was not one with malicious intent behind it, evidently, the Quidditch player was not here to make trouble.

Kioshi, of course, had already gone to greet the new arrivals. Meowing and sniffing the other cat in greeting, the dark-furred feline then turned and brushed up against dan, purring loudly and lapping at his trousers like the strange being he was.

Selim let out a sigh, he loved his cat, but sometimes he realized just how often the feline foiled his usual solitary, mildly intimidating aura. The little trickster.

Shifting he grabbed what was supposed to be Kioshi's tea (Now that the feline had claimed his), and took a few sips, placing it on his lap. He wasn't good a socializing, but he remembered the etiquette classes the Shimadas had forced him to go through once again, small talk wasn't terribly uncomfortable.

"If it isn't uncomfortable why haven't you answered the boy?" Aku spoke to him in a taunting voice. Selim scowled, the expression hidden behind his rabbit mask. He refused to relay the words to the world outside his own head.

"As well as I can be." The reclusive boy finally responded. A faint itching in the back of his throat decided to reveal itself, causing him to turn away from his visitor and cough into his elbow, the fit taking a good while to fade. When it did he mutely lowered his mask back over his mouth, hiding it and the slight glimpse of scarring once more.

Selim wasn't really a healthy child, after all. With his chronic cough triggered by some kind of mental tic, he was never able to fully escape sore throats. At least he wasn't coughing up blood like he did last year.

Last year it wasn't just a tic, it was caused by illness, one forced on him from the gas chamber incident and then worsened by his following unhealthy lifestyle. When he had been adopted he was properly treated. But after going almost a year with a constant cough and thanks to the trauma of the toxic gas incident, his mind just refused to let it go.

At least that was how it was vaguely explained to him by the doctors.

The boy cleared his throat after catching his breath, speaking once more, his voice now muffle-echoed by his mask. "What brings you here?" 'Why have you interrupted my peace?'

He glanced over at the boy, Kioshi meowed again, Selim didn't know what he wanted.

Dan smiled. Selim was doing well
He couldn't say that he knew Selim very well... All he did know was that he a major recluse and rarely talked to people.

Which made him the perfect target for Dan to make friends with. All that brooding nonsense, he figured, could be dispelled, at least in part, with a nice friend.

Loki happily greeted the other kitty, exchanging notes about his human.
To both his and Dan's delight, the other kitty started lovingly rubbing up against Dan.
Dan reached down and gently scratched the kitty ears. This was a kitty baby, and all kitty babys required ear scratches and head pats. It was law.

Dan smiled again when Selim responded, but then put it together that "As well as can be" Could mean a lot of different things.

Dan was about to ask for clarification of that response, when Selim asked him something. Why he was out here in the first place.
Well, it was a valid question at least.

"I finished eatin' early n' decided ta have a walk. Got nuthin else ta do. Might as well leave all the noise."

Then he cocked his head.

"Why'r ye out here? Havin' a tea party?"

The boy smiled, Selim didn't know why, he hadn't said anything particularly amusing.

Palmer had responded to his question with a valid answer Selim could get behind. Hogwarts was noisy, walks were not. Selim left the noisy great hall partially for the same reason, after all.

The boy then asked another question, one too many in his humble opinion. It was a redundant one as well. "Evidentally. I never stay in the great hall for meals, too loud, too many faces, too stifling." 'Major recluse' was an apt description for the pale, scarred boy. After his failed attempts to not be a recluse, he gave up on trying to oppose his nature.

Besides, crowds were far too much to deal with for someone like him, he never knew what sounds were fabricated by his mind and what sounds weren't. Were the voices calling his name in the faceless mob real, or not? Both answers were easily validated in crowds, which was stressful enough on its own. Compounded with the feeling of being watched it often felt like he was suffocating slowly in toxic gasses once more.

His finger twitched at the thought, and he looked away. Kioshi, after getting head scritches, decided that Dan was his favourite person at that moment, and decided to leap atop the boy's shoulders and lick his face. He often did this to people he decided he liked, Flash could attest to that.

A tickle and phantom pain at the back of Selim's through gave rise to yet another coughing fit from the boy. This one was short-lived though, and he recovered quickly enough, feeling trained from both it and the interaction. Was this boy going to leave him alone now that he'd answered his questions? Selim didn't have the energy capacity for much else beyond school and self-care these days. Anything tacked onto that ended up feeling like a soul-sucking journey up a mountain for the boy.

He wanted to go back to his dorm and lay in bed. Sadly, since classes were after this, he wouldn't be able to get much rest in if he did that anyway. If the Quidditch boy kept trying to carry on the conversation, he'd soon find that it'd be very one-sided.

Selim got the sense that his peer didn't much care about that though.
