It is time for the truth
"Ugh." Haley dropped exhausted to the floor of the Quidditch training pitch. Sweat was running down her forehead and she was breathing heavily as she just lay there. Ever since the new school year had started at Hogwarts, she had been spending more and more time training. Not only did she train on her broom, but she went jogging to improve her stamina and at the same time she had discovered weight training. More and more of her free time had been spent exercising, it helped her clear her head and not remember things she didn't want to remember. Today, too, after finishing her homework, her path led directly to the training pitch. After an hour on the broom, she ran a few laps around the field and then did some bodyweight exercises. Once again she had improved to the last time and while she lay powerless on the floor after her last set of push-ups, there was still a satisfied smile on her face.
It took her a few minutes to find the strength and motivation to get up from the floor. She wiped away the sweat with her towel and drank a large gulp of water before making her way to the castle. She was wearing tight sports leggings and a tight training shirt and by now slight changes could be seen on her body. Not only did she notice her progress in her training, but her muscles were beginning to look more defined. With her bag slung over her shoulder, she walked across the grounds of Hogwarts. After her body had cooled down a little, she felt a cold breeze on her skin. The wind on her skin, wet with sweat, left goosebumps and as she walked across the courtyard she dug her hoodie out of her sports bag and pulled it over her head. She then undid her messy braid and made herself a new high braid.
Just at the moment she lifted her gaze again, her eyes caught sight of a not unfamiliar pair of eyes. "Shit." Haley muttered quietly to herself and quickly averted her gaze. That was the last thing she needed right now, a confrontation. She still owed Simon an explanation and she knew she couldn't put it off any longer, but she wasn't ready for that, to tell him NOW. Nervously, she looked around her, her heartbeat quickening again, but this time not from exertion but from excitement. She looked in her bag, pretending she had forgotten something, and quickly turned on her own axis and walked quickly back the way she had just come.
She didn't need to turn around to know deep down that Simon wasn't going to let up. Still, she didn't look back, she just hoped that her gut would deceive her. That he wasn't close behind her and had followed her from the Courtyard. Damn it, I am NOT ready, was the only thing going on in her head, but she saw no way out. The only way out would have been if Simon really hadn't followed her and she was completely wrong with her assumption.

It is time for the truth
@Trying to talk to @Haley Rose
The moment Simon noticed Haley from across the way, she seemed to notice him. Hadn't she? She certainly was pretended as if she hadn't but something told him that she certainly had. She was acting rather peculiar and even if she was trying to play it off, he didn't think she was doing such a good job with it.
She had been avoiding him for what seemed like forever now and so he didn't really expect anything differently. The two were still together, and they were still planning to go to the Autumn Ball together (although attire had never been discussed because they never talked anymore).
He could have been patient. He could have been kind. He should have. Instead, he let frustration take over and he was tired of things being pushed to the back burner and forgotten about. So in that moment he could have walked away and let her have more time, let her approach him. He could have approached and talked about something else. Anything else. The weather even. But no, he would keep pressing until she finally talked. It really wasn't all too much to ask from someone you were supposed to trust - so he thought.
Simon began to think about all the times that she avoided him, turning abruptly in the hall to not cross his path or darting out of class at the very first moment so not to have to speak to him. It was getting too much. No, it was time.
"Haley You-Really-Fricken-Need-To-Have-A-Middle-Name-Sometimes Rose," he called out, somewhat making slight humor out of the situation. Someone always knew they were in trouble when a parent, or in his cause an aunt, called out that FULL name. SIMON EZRA KINCAID! - Yes, he knew that's when someone meant business. Unfortunately though Haley didn't have a middle name and Simon knew that.
"Please talk to me."

It is time for the truth
@Simon KincaidAnd of course she had to be right in this case of all things. She stopped abruptly when Simon called for her and in any other situation she would have laughed at her new second name, but not at this moment. At the moment when she just wanted to be alone and above all avoid what was to come. But now she stood there, her back still turned to Simon, not smiling at the actually funny call. A chill ran down her spine, she almost didn't dare turn around and face the truth.
"I can't." she whispered so softly that only she could hear, her back still turned to Simon and not sure what to do now. She couldn't just walk away, for far too long she had avoided her own boyfriend and she couldn't show him so little respect that she would just leave now. He didn't deserve this, all this he didn't deserve. She dropped her bag on the floor and slowly turned around, desperation written all over her face and it was just hard to look up from her feet to his face. She was afraid to see the disappointment in his face and especially to show her weakness.
But she finally looked at him. She looked at him with her green eyes, her facial expression never wavering. She didn't know what to say. Should she play dumb and ask what she should talk about? No, he and she both knew it would be an evasion. Should she just tell everything here and now? As much as she wanted to, she couldn't. The words would not leave her mouth. It seemed like there was no single option for Haley and the time she just stood there in silence grew longer and longer. So long that there was no point in saying anything else.
Finally she decided to remain silent. Not a single word left her lips and disappointed with herself she lowered her eyes and head. But Haley was lost in the situation herself, she was constantly rescuing herself from this conflict and doing everything she could to avoid having to wrap her head around it all, so how could she do it now? People don't understand how stressful it is to explain what's going on inside your head when you don't even understand it yourself.
But it had to happen sometime and maybe that sometime was right now. She was just waiting for Simon to break the silence. To tell her that she was totally out of line, that she was being unfair to him and not to be such a stupid stupid kid. Even though Simon would probably never say this, he would be right to do so. She needed to talk to him. She needed him and if she didn't want to lose him, she had to take this step.
The situation was almost burning her skin. The uncertainty of what would happen now. Would he just leave her standing here? Would he talk to her sympathetically or yell at her? No one liked being yelled at, let alone arguing, but it seemed that was exactly what was needed for Haley's wall to finally break.

It is time for the truth
Making up, or breaking up? Your call @Haley Rose =(
"I can't..." he repeated her words slowly. She couldn't when whatever it was first happened or was said. She couldn't at Summer Camp. Now, MONTHS later, she still couldn't. Simon didn't discount that this was painful for her but he thought they had the kind of relationship that they could talk to each other about anything. It was apparent now that wasn't the case and she was never planning on talking to him about it.
"Alright. Alright, that's it then. You can't." He was done pressing. He was done encouraging and trying here. Maybe she could find someone else to confide in. Maybe she already had. It wasn't like he ever spent time with her or had conversations with her. She was too busy trying to avoid him.
Simon took a few steps backward, distancing himself some from where she stood. "You can't. End of story. I'll quit asking and I'll quit pressuring." He'd say you won but he knew that whatever was going on was some sort of internal struggle and so Haley really didn't win anything at all. She would still be suffering.
His head lowered and his gaze fell upon the black and silver snake ring she had given him the year prior. She had a similar one, at least snake motif. They had belonged to her grandparents and at first it was thought they were cool because of old family connections but after learning the cruelty her grandparents brought her mother, they continued to wear them as a sort of defiance. It was a connection they shared and he wore it, glad that she had chosen him as her secret keeper and glad that she had chosen him as her boyfriend. Now? Now she wanted nothing to do with him.
Simon placed his hand on the ring. It was something he wore now every.single.day. and he really didn't want to take it off. It was a family piece though and not truly his to have - now especially. It didn't stand for what it used to.
"A healthy relationship...is wanting to be with someone and spend your time with them. A healthy relationship is when you look forward to seeing them, not turn on a dime in the corridors when you see them walking your way...or stalk across the Courtyard quickly. A healthy relationship is communication and trust. I don't know why, but you don't have that anymore with me. You don't spend time with me and you do turn away when you see me and you don't communicate and you obviously no longer trust me to be someone to help with your problems or secrets so...I get it. I hear you. You can't. You can't."
"You can't spend time with me and you can't communicate with me and you can't confide your trust in me. And if you can't, then I guess this has somehow become some sort of toxic relationship and you deserve better. You deserve someone you want to spend your time with, someone you look forward to seeing, and someone you can openly talk to."
His fingers were now in place to slide the ring off his finger but he couldn't bring himself to even move it the slightest bit. And his eyes, they stayed fixated upon that silver and black ring. If he looked up at her, there would be tears. He could feel it. Maybe if he shifted his gaze downward she wouldn't notice. Silver. Black, the black gemstone, the snake pattern, the gothic design of the ring...and a splash of red? Red?
Simon glanced up quickly because he was startled by that but it quickly set in what happened. Dhampirs. They cried tears of blood. Simon wasn't known for crying and therefore never knew this about him. It only helped confirm his almost already realized suspicions of being a dhampir and that sent him over the top. He looked away so she wouldn't have to see because it was freaking him out and he didn't even know what it would do to her. He wiped the ring on the trousers of his school uniform and stepped away. "I gotta go," he whispered quickly and turned away from her and it was now he who was quickly sauntering across the Courtyard.

It is time for the truth
@Simon KincaidHaley had expected many things, but not this reaction. She listened to Simon, attentively. But she waited for him to finally yell at her. Not that she expected him to, because he was the type because he wasn't. It was much more what she would do in his position, much more that it was what she deserved and maybe it was just what she needed to finally get her courage up. But it was Simon, understanding as always, even if he would have had every right for a different reaction.
She listened to him attentively, her gaze lowered. She was ashamed of her behaviour, had been for weeks, but she was a coward. She did not face the truth, the things that happened and above all she hurt other people with it. People who were important to her and who didn't deserve this. People like Simon.
He spoke of healthy relationships, he listed her misbehaviour and if it had been possible, she would have lowered her head even further. She felt ashamed, but sad at the same time. She knew she had messed up. She had Simon by her side, someone to hold, someone she needed, but she had screwed up. Tears dripped one by one from her eyes to the ground beneath her and she waited for a certain sentence. A certain statement. That he couldn't do it, that she wasn't the Haley he liked anymore and that he would leave her.
Toxic relationship, she knew it, it was about to come. She tried to hold back the tears. She tried to ignore the stabbing pain in her chest. She deserved this and it was her own fault. But just at the moment when he should have left her, he said something else. You deserve better. Wait what? What was happening right now? It wasn't her who deserved better, it was him. Confused and jerky, she raised her head and looked at Simon. His gaze was downcast and for a moment she was at a loss for words, she really didn't know what to say this time. At that moment it wasn't that she didn't want to talk, it was that she couldn't.
All she could do was look at him. To see what she had done to him. How she had hurt him. How she had misbehaved for months and all to Simon's sorrow. She hated herself more than ever at that moment. More than in the basement when she realised she was a stupid stupid child.
Just as she was about to say something, something happened. At first she didn't realise what was going on, but the moment Simon raised his gaze she realised. She had never seen Simon cry before. She had never seen a dhampir cry before. But she knew what was happening. Blood. Dhampires cried blood, she had read that in one of the books. After Simon and she had suspected that he might be a dhampire, and it had been unofficially confirmed, she had immediately grabbed every possible book she could find on the subject.
"Wait!" she called out to him without thinking about it. It was her body, her gut, her heart that spoke and not her head. The last thing she wanted was for Simon to leave NOW. "You're not right Simon. It's not ME who deserves someone better, it's YOU." She bowed her head, but pulled herself together. She took a deep breath, raised her eyes and walked slowly towards him. She waited for his reaction, would he let her or not? She might stop, but she would not stop talking. For far too long she had done so.
"I was the worst girlfriend in this world and you didn't deserve all this. Never will I be able to make it up to you, never will I be able to expect you to forgive me and I can understand if you leave." She paused for a moment. The thought of losing Simon hurt more than she might have imagined. She swallowed the lump in her throat and continued. "I just want you to know that it's not because I can't or don't want to talk to YOU. You're the first and probably the only one I want to talk to." Tears gathered in her eyes again, but she didn't want to cry. She wanted to finally give Simon an explanation. At least an explanation as to why she had never told him. After that she would let him go, that would be his right. "When I say it out loud, it's as if I give this experience, this event, power. As if it would become true and I would give up the power of repression. My biggest fear is to relive it all by saying it out loud and that is why I have repressed it as much as possible. Ignored it, tried to forget it."
She lowered her head. She had managed to give him an explanation, but she would not be able to watch him leave.

It is time for the truth
Keeps going back and forth with @Haley Rose. Haha, sorry, Jen, but isn't this how breakups/almost breakups/makeups go? Haley can decide as she wishes as always!
As he walked away, he brushed his hands against his face, only to get his fingertips now blood stained. It was unsettling to him and he could only imagine what it would look like for someone else. She called for him to wait but he didn't want to wait. He didn't want her to see him like this. It would be bad enough if he cried normal tears but this only further drove home the fact that he was some sort of freak.
Still, she called for him to wait. Simon stopped, his back still to her but he didn't take another step. Slowly he began to wipe his hands on his uniform, just wanting the awful red to go away and to achieve some sort of normalcy here and be Simon Kincaid, the hurting boyfriend...not Simon Kincaid, the dhampir freak.
He listened as she mentioned if she spoke of what was wrong to him, that it would give the experience, the event, power. She didn't want to relive it.
Simon began to turn around, knowing that she was going through some sort of internal struggle and it no longer mattered what was wrong with him. It didn't matter if he was turning more into some monster with every day that seemed to pass, or that he and Haley were having relationship problems to where he felt he didn't even have a girlfriend. What mattered was that she went through something tragic and was battling it constantly.
"You can't repress things and hope they go away," he whispered to her as his mind tried to think of every possible scenario of what might have happened to her over the summer without her telling him. It went from bad to worse. He knew Haley enough to know it had to have been a serious matter for her to act like this. He had been so stupid for pressuring her, for being frustrated with her, for the anger.
"Suppressing emotions and memories endangers your health and well-being. Maybe you've got a better outward expression of emotion but that inner emotional experience isn't going to change. It doesn't make it go away, it just stays inside you and is causing you more pain. Haley. Please. Talk to me. Talk to me and let me be here for you or...or find someone you trust more like Aiden or your parents or a professor or the headmaster. Someone."
Simon wasn't upset anymore, he was worried for her and he was downhearted that he couldn't be that someone for her.
"Anyone," he said more quietly. She said it wasn't him but it had been. If he had been better, if the two had been closer, maybe she could feel that she could have talked to him about it. "Please get the help you need, Hales. Please. I love you," he whispered. Simon reached out, slipping his hand into hers and squeezed it softly before letting it go. It was a sort of heartbreaking moment for him. It was almost as if as he let go of her hand, he was letting go of their relationship. She didn't need him. She needed more. More than he could give. "I love you," he whispered again.

It is time for the truth
@Simon KincaidThe thought that this was now the end of Simon Ezra Kincaid and Haley Rose hurt more than Haley could ever have imagined. This young relationship that was special in its own way. The newly married couple now faced a obstacle in the road and a decision had to be made. But most of all, Haley had to make a decision, would she relive the events from the summer, would she tell Simon everything or would she keep quiet and at the same time that would be the end of this relationship. Or would she not think about herself for once and do what was best for Simon? But what was best for him? It wasn't her and that meant, by implication, that she would have to let him go.
But she was still a child, how could she make such a decision? She didn't know what it all meant. She was a child and had to go through these experiences in the cellar. Maybe this was also the point where she had to leave her childhood behind.
Haley stood there, her eyes still lowered. She couldn't watch Simon leave. How the relationship would end here. This pain was worse, her heart felt like it was breaking and at the same time there was a heavy darkness inside her at being gone without Simon. She didn't know what to do, she stood there. She wanted to be with Simon, but she couldn't do that to him. She would have to pull herself together for once in her life and not be selfish.
She listened to Simon, tears rolling out of the corner of her eyes and dripping onto the ground in front of her. The careful contact of their hands was the light at the end of the tunnel, but she felt all the more empty when he broke contact again. His words resounded in her head. "Someone you trust more like Aiden..." She couldn't believe it, was this about Aiden now too? "There is no one." She spoke through gritted teeth and paused briefly to take a breath. "There is no one I trust more than you." And she wasn't just saying that. Simon was her Secret Keeper and for a reason. "YOU are the only one I would even want to talk to." She continued now, and at the same time couldn't believe that Simon would think it was because of her trust in him. "And it was always you. I've never spoken to Aiden about it, I haven't even written him a letter since I got back. It doesn't matter now, which is my point. The only reason he knows anything about it is because he got me out of it." Haley fell silent, the images coming back into her head and she could feel the panic slowly rising inside her. She clutched herself, her gaze still fixed on the floor. Actually, she didn't even know if Simon was still there, but she kept her eyes down, closed.
"They wanted to use me. But I refused." "I just wanted to forget. Not answer any questions and not relive all this." Her breathing became faster and stronger in the last few minutes, the panic inside her increasing. She was having a panic attack and she didn't even notice it herself.
Not once did she dare open her eyes, even when she squatted down and sat on the floor. She hugged her legs and rocked back and forth, tears streaming down her face and she felt weak. Like a stupid stupid child. She didn't even assume that anyone else was there. She just whispered softly, "I love you too."

Hoping to help @Haley Rose
Simon watched as she stood there, trying to decide if she would remain in this limbo state of not telling him or if she'd finally change her mind. There was a lot on her mind and he knew it but he didn't want her to have to deal with it alone.
Maybe it was bringing up Aiden that pushed her over the edge. She seemed to get more than upset, she seemed to get angry and now she was talking. She still wasn't looking at him, but she was talking. That was a start.
No, he didn't want to cause her pain. She said that she didn't want to think about it, relive it. He didn't want that either but she couldn't keep pushing it aside anymore. It wasn't working. Maybe if he knew, he could help. That was his hope.
He watched as she slowly brought her sleeves up, revealing marks and bruises. That wasn't something he was expecting. They hurt her? For a duration of time?
Simon was about to open up his mouth to ask some questions when she said she didn't want to answer questions. Her breath grew heavier and he watched her lower to the ground.
It was a lot to take in, but never something he'd run from. Instead, he slowly lowered himself down to the ground as well and brought his arm securely around her. "I want to help you through this. Please. Let me help you. No more shutting me out."

It is time for the truth
@Simon KincaidHaley hated that this experience, this pain and this fear had so much power over her. That she was now sitting here on the floor, crying quietly and feeling nothing but insecurity. She hated it, hated it, hated it. And it all just caused her to slide deeper into the panic attack and it seemed like there was no way out. But Haley was wrong. There was a way out and not just one way out. There was a way, it had been in front of her the whole time. A way that would help her to come to terms with what had happened, to not be alone and to experience love, not pain. But as so often, she couldn't see the forest for the trees. She had closed herself off, cut everything and everyone off from her, but it was as if her vision was slowly clearing.
It was the moment when Simon put his arm around her. It was the moment when she suddenly felt safe. When the spiral of panic attacks stopped and she slowly calmed down. She began to be able to concentrate better on her breathing, clear her head and hold back the tears. It took time, but eventually Haley lifted her head and looked up at Simon with her red eyes. "Simon they just wanted to use me. And I was that supid child." she whimpered, tears in her eyes.
It was that moment when she let the wall fall. She began to tell him everything. She knew there was no point in putting it off any longer, she had to get through it NOW. She tried to hold back the tears but every now and then there was a crack in her voice. She had to stop, wipe away the tears, but she went through with it. She told Simon everything, from beginning to end. How she had been happy to see her grandfather again, that Aiden was there too and that he had helped her. That the only contact after that had been a brief "He's fine." and she hadn't contacted him since.
With all that, she felt ashamed. She didn't know why, maybe because she had been such a stupid child, but she was embarrassed. After she had fallen silent, finished telling her story, she looked at the floor in front of her. She did not manage to lift her head. She did not want to see what expression she might see on Simon's face.

Supporting @Haley Rose
It was a lot to take in but Simon listened. He listened to every word that came out, took in every time her voice cracked, and experienced every tear that fell - at least at that moment. Surely Haley had shed many more during her Summer and beyond but now was a time to get through it (as best as one could) and he was going to be there for her.
Simon pulled her in securely, keeping his arms around her and hoping she knew she didn't need to be alone in this any more. He would help in any and every way that he could. Yes, maybe she had pushed him away but it wasn't her fault. He understood. He should have been better at being persistent and knowing something was off and fought harder to break through this wall sooner.
At least they were there now.
He moved himself closer to her, so he could bring her head onto his shoulder and as he glanced down at his hands upon her back as he held her, he saw her grandfather's ring there on his finger. How many times had he thought about taking it off for the wrong reasons? Now he wanted to take it off and throw it into the Black Lake, never to be seen again but no. How much would her grandfather hate that it was on some halfblood's, halfbreed's hand? How much would he hate it that it was on someone who would support Haley's mother over him?
It might have once belonged to this awful horrible man, but it was now his - given by someone he most cared about. It would now stand for the defiance against him. It would remain there. And Simon - he would remain there.
"Haley, I'm here for you in any way I can be," he whispered to her. She no longer had to fight this battle alone.
