Bex Chaney crouched behind one the columns in the Courtyard, trying to hide a little from the students in the area as the light faded from the sky. Her classes had not gone well that day, really that week. She had botched nearly every spell repeatedly in class and received low marks on every homework piece she got back so far. Her parents would not be pleased if they found out about her poor performance, even though they did not understand most of what she was doing since they were Muggles, and they did not care it was still really the beginning of the school year. They only cared about her grades.
That was why Bex stood facing the fountain watching for any face she recognized while gripping the dungbomb she had bought in Diagon Alley before school started. She knew the difficulty she was having in class wasn’t nobody’s fault, well nobody except her fault, but that didn’t stop her from wanting to take out her anger on some unsuspecting classmate or housemate. She was nervous about getting caught. Who wouldn’t be when her parents still didn’t understand why she needed to learn magic in a magical school? It had been a frequent fight over the summer break, and she was truly terrified her parents would pull her from Hogwarts and force her to go to a Muggle secondary school. Regardless, she wasn’t going to let her nerves stop her; she was a Gryffindor, after all.
She just wished someone had came along before now. She had been standing out here for hours now, hours that probably would have been better served studying, she thought to herself, and it was getting close to curfew. Well, actually she didn’t really know how close it was to curfew. She didn’t see a clock anywhere and she didn’t know any spells that could tell you. Maybe she should get a watch, but would a watch even work at Hogwarts?
Bex rolled her eyes at her internal dialogue, it was always getting off topic like that. She returned to vigilantly watching for someone to toss the dungbomb at. Bex suddenly straightened and scratched her head as she realized she didn’t actually know how to use the joke item. She had bought it without really paying attention when she ducked into Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes while her parents were distracted. She had to be quick in the joke store because they refused to let her go into the shop no matter how hard she had begged. She grimaced as she caught a brief whiff of her hands, which was probably now what her head smelled like. She wondered if anyone passing by could smell her and would know what she was up to.
This was not shaping up to be the best plan Bex had ever had.
