APPEARANCE

Standing at a grand total of 4 feet 9 inches (and 4 feet 11 inches if he stood on his tippy toes), Artemis looks like your typical, happy-go-lucky first year. He has a round, soft face with a fair olive skin tone and a singular beauty mark under the left corner of his mouth that's perpetually curved into a cheeky grin. His hair, messy, layered, and fluffy, ends just around the middle of his neck, and even though he ties it back in a simple half-up, half-down hairstyle, it has a tendency to fall into his big brown eyes.

Artemis is frequently seen running through the halls of Hogwarts with his school uniform in complete disarray, collar unbuttoned, robes hanging halfway off his shoulders, and tie stuffed hastily into a pocket rather than around his neck. There's just so much of the school to poke around, look at, and explore, and frankly, Artemis is in too much of a hurry to uncover every little secret to care about his clothes. When he's not wearing his uniform, Artemis can be found wearing big, comfy hoodies or oversized t-shirts tucked into jeans with a pair of worn sneakers. He also has a pair of clear rimmed glasses that he rarely wears; according to Artemis, he looks absolutely silly with them on.

PERSONALITY

If you were to ask other people what they thought of Artemis, "rascal" is probably the first word that comes to mind. It's not that Artemis is a bad kid per se; he just has an unfortunate habit of never ever looking before he leaps. His curiosity often gets the better of him, and when you combine that with his almost nonexistent impulse control, you'll find Artemis in places where he doesn't belong, with things that aren't his, and doing things that he really should've thought through first. Despite this, Artemis rarely actually finds himself in any real trouble, being unexpectedly good at lying and improvising his way out of sticky situations.

Always ready with a playful grin on his face and a wisecrack on the tip of his tongue, people are often surprised to find that Artemis can be rather mature and competent when he needs to be. In fact, Artemis prides himself on his self-sufficiency, and when others remind him that he's just a kid, Artemis will indignantly insist that he is not a child and to stop treating him like one. He's not the type to ask for help or depend on other people, and this stems from a fear of being seen as a burden. Artemis would rather struggle on his own, refusing to rely on other people until everything crumbles into one big overwhelming mess. And even then, it takes a lot of urging for him to begrudgingly admit that he no longer has everything under control. Needless to say, Artemis absolutely hates group projects.

When it comes to interacting with other people for fun however, Artemis is anything but shy, having no qualms about striking up conversations with complete strangers. He's quite the chatterbox, happy to speak to anything, inanimate or not, and has a habit of talking to himself when debating a decision or deep in thought. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts to be friendly, not everyone will get along with Artemis; he often takes insults personally and tends to hold grudges until he feels like he has been properly apologized to. Thankfully, Artemis is good at recognizing when he is in the wrong and owning up to his mistakes. Most of the time.

HISTORY/BACKGROUND STORY

BASIC OVERVIEW

Manchester, England. On the fourth of October, during a blustering mid-day downpour, 26 year old Xinyi Zhang gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Within seconds, the delivery room was filled with the sounds of an infant screaming bloody murder as he took a breath in for the very first time. And when he finally opened his little brown eyes, tear filled and unfocused, Xinyi swore that she could see the stars and moon reflected in them. That day, she gave her son two names: Yichen, for the sun, the moon, and the stars, and Artemis, after the Greek goddess of the moon.

Ever since the beginning, it was always just Artemis and his mom. His father, a pureblood wizard, had left long before Artemis was born and never spoke a word about magic. As a result, Artemis grew up as an only child who knew nothing about Hogwarts nor his own abilities and is completely unaware of his own half-blood status. Both he and his mother believe that his father is simply a muggle, and that Artemis is a muggleborn. Fatherlessness aside, his childhood was a happy one; in school, Artemis seldom ran into trouble with bullies, and although he never had anybody he would really consider a best friend, he was never truly lonely. His grades were good, and it was there in his classes that Artemis discovered his love for art and history. And although there wasn't much room (or rather, money) in his life for paid extracurricular programs, he easily found other ways to amuse himself, spending hours on end cooped up in the library, exploring his neighborhood, and drawing on any scrap of paper he could get his hands on.

Artemis was (and still is) a total mama's boy, and his mom always did her best to care for him. The circumstances weren't always perfect though. A single mother and an immigrant from Hong Kong, Xinyi was usually busy working as a waitress during the day, only coming home in the evening for dinner and a kiss goodnight. In addition to this, she ran a small business on the side selling trinkets and handmade goods in order to help keep the lights on in the cramped little apartment they lived in. This meant that most days, Artemis was watched after by his grandmother instead. It wasn't all bad though; Grandma loved to spoil him rotten, and he loved her right back. But after seeing his mom come home looking so awfully tired all the time, Artemis quickly learned to handle himself and avoid causing too much trouble when she was around.

It was late at night when Artemis received his acceptance letter. The warm summer moon was high in the sky and everyone was turning in for bed, having just finished watching a horror movie together when out from the darkness came a knock at the front door. Xinyi paused, looking to her family and then to a clock on the wall. 11:42 pm. Not exactly visiting hours. A second knock, more insistent and impatient came, and Xinyi slowly picked up her aluminum bat that was leaning near the door. There was no need to get drastic; it could just be a stern neighbor coming to complain about the noise for all they knew, but she liked to be prepared in any case. Artemis watched as his mom slowly unlocked the door, and he felt a creeping sense of fear and dread, imagining a grey faced vampire waiting just beyond the safety of the metal chain and latch that (mercifully) stayed in place. Instead of a pale grey hand clawing out with blackened nails, however, all that came was a letter, neatly sealed with a wax stamp. That was when Artemis heard the sentence that would forever change his life.

"Artemis Zhang? I'm here to deliver your acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

FAMILY HISTORY

Xinyi Zhang had never planned to be a mom. When she was 24, she left Hong Kong and immigrated to the United Kingdom with her mother, Yuming Wu, determined to do whatever it took build a life for herself and prepared for just about anything life could throw at her. Anything it seemed, except for falling in love. Not long after settling down in Manchester, England, Xinyi met a man during a night out at a club. He told her that his name was Qiang Lin... and she believed him. For a year, life felt like a Cinderella story. Qiang would take Xinyi out on expensive dates, bringing gifts for her and her mother and treating her like she meant everything to him. And sure, he didn't talk too much about his personal life and refused to let her meet his family, but Xinyi was starting to think that, maybe, she could have a future with this man named Qiang Lin.

But then she got pregnant. And then he ran away. Heartbroken and devastated, Xinyi found solace in her mother and her community. And when Artemis was born, she made sure to always be honest but sparing with the information she told him about his father, not wanting to make him feel as if he was missing a part in his family and his life. All Artemis knows about his father is that his name is Qiang Lin and that Qiang and his mother had parted ways before he was born. Despite Xinyi's best efforts to present a neutral story, Artemis does hold a grudge towards his father for leaving him and his mother.

What neither Xinyi nor Artemis knew, however, was that Qiang Lin was not that man's real name; in fact, he wasn't even a muggle. The man who was Artemis' father was actually a pureblood wizard who was living a double life: one in the wizarding world, and one in the mundane world. In an attempt to conceal his involvement with Muggles from the judgment of his family and the pureblood circles he ran in, he chose to use the alias Qiang Lin. But when things were becoming too serious with Xinyi, coming to a head with her unexpected pregnancy, he decided that he couldn't let himself be tied down and abandoned her for the comfort and security of his old life.

FIRST INSTANCE OF MAGIC

Artemis' first experience with underage accidental magic was a memorable one. It happened on the hour of his tenth birthday; his mom had taken time off work just to spend a whole day with him, and as she brought out the cake, Artemis was practically leaping with joy. He eagerly blew at the candles, wishing that this moment would never end, but instead of the small flames going out, he, his mother, and his grandma watched in horror as the fire suddenly danced and bloomed into a towering blaze. To be honest, it would've been a rather pretty and entertaining sight if everyone weren't so busy trying to put it out and avoiding burning the apartment down.
