From a farm to a castle
Aurora's blue eyes darted in every direction as she took in the looming train and bustling station. Her hand was gripped tightly in her mothers, her only lifeline in this chaotic new world she found herself in.
Her mother had been leading the way, but stopped short pulling her hand free from Aurora. “Oh Henry, look at the mess on your face.” She began to fuss with the baby’s sticky cheeks from the small novelty lollipop he had gripped in his small fist. “I told your father not to give that to you yet…” It had been one of the many souvenirs picked up on their three day trip to London. Aurora had lost herself in the fun of being in such a new and exciting place with her boisterous brothers and sisters. The family had been quite a sight to behold making their way around London’s great tourist traps with a whole army of eager children. Having spent most of their lives on a farm in the countryside, they made the most of any holiday they got to spend away. Now her sisters and brothers were all back at the hotel with her father, besides baby Henry. Her parents deciding not to drag all of them into the mess of children trying to board the train. The air felt oddly empty without the constant gasp and high pitch excitement of her siblings voices. Aurora felt a lump form in her throat.
Her mother caught the look and leaned down, wiping a strand of frizzy brown hair out of her face. She cupped her middle daughters face with one hand and smiled reassuringly at her. “Your going to have a great time Aurora. Your father never stops talking about all the great things he got up to when he went to Hogwarts.”
Aurora tried to put on a brave face for her mother, who knelt down and gingerly placed a kiss on her forehead. “You can write to us any time you want. But trust me by the time winter break comes around you will be having so much fun you won’t want to come home to a boring farm.” With that she pulled her into a final hug and sent her on her way into the crowd of children loading onto the train.
Aurora followed in the crowd, only turning back as she reached the door into the train. She spotted her mother watching her and caught sight of a bit of sorrow in her mother’s eyes. Her mother waved putting on a smile and seeming to push away her obvious sadness at seeing her daughter go. She turned away as Aurora disappeared into the train leaving her behind.
Aurora fidgeted with the straps of her worn blue backpack. It seemed to be two sizes to big for her small frame. As she made her way down the narrow halls of the train she past by carriages buzzing with life and laughter from eager children. On occasion she had to press herself against the wall as another happy student bounded by.
The excitement in the air wasn't matched by Aurora, whom felt completely overwhelmed as her eyes darted into another carriage as she passed by. This one seemed to have children her age, and they were lively involved in conversations. "Be brave!" The words of her mother drifted into her mind again.
For a moment her feet turned, as if she was going to take the dive and join them. But it was all too much. She turned away again, continuing her solo march down the hallway till she finally found an empty carriage. Temporary relief flooding her as she made her way inside, and put her bag on the shelf above her seat. Sitting down heavily on the bench, the weight of everything found her again.
What am I doing here? She questioned herself. I don't belong in a place like this. I just want to go back to the farm...
Her mind was filled with memories of home. The quaint farm resting in a sea of green hills as far as the eye could see. Her favorite cat Jade who always followed her about as she worked on her morning chores. The bustle and chaos of her 8 siblings all tossed into the small kitchen at the same time for dinner. Sweet memories of the place she had called home for 11 years, and now it was all behind her as she found herself very alone.
Why did I have to be the one who born with magic. If only Connor, Violet, Marcus, or George had been born with magic, than at least I wouldn’t be here alone. Tears began to well up in her blue eyes at the thoughts, and she swallowed hard, trying to fight the lump in her throat.
