A New Partner
Edalyn strode confidentially into Ollivander’s shop with a giant grin on her face.
The bell tinkled overhead as the door hit it, announcing her arrival. She had raced ahead of her parents who were still at Flourish and Blotts, buying her books.
“Ahh Miss Edalyn Clawthorne!” A jolly old fellow sounded behind the counter in front of her.
“It’s about time you arrived.” he greeted her with a warm smile.
Edalyn walked up to the counter excited for what wand might choose her!
“I’m here to find my wand!” Edalyn exclaimed excitedly whilst slamming her hand on the counter.
Ollivander chuckled and pulled a wand box out from underneath the counter. He opened it and inside was an ornate wand, darker for a wood, and quite short.
“Here, we have a wand made of Black Walnut, snallygaster heartstring, 9 3/4 inches. Go ahead and give it a wave.” He encouraged as he passed the wand to her.
Edalyn with a quick wave of her wand managed to shatter one of the store windows as a burst of magic collided with it.
“Uhh, is that supposed to happen?” Edalyn asked bewildered as she wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. She had meant for something else to happen but she did love a good bout of destruction from time to time.
“Hmm…most definitely not.” Ollivander murmured as he took the wand back from her. He put the wand back in its box and took it to the back. No sooner had he left when he returned with another box.
Opening it, Edalyn saw that this was a lot longer and the wood was paler too and quite curvy.
“This one is made of Aspen wood, White River Monster Spine, and 13 3/4 inches.
Edalyn took the wand a took a deep breath trying to focus. She waved it and this time, a downpour of rain began inside the shop, wetting everything in sight.
Edalyn frowned. Still not what she had intended to happen.
With a broad wave of his wand, Ollivander dispersed the rain and the water dried up instantly.
“Still not that.” He muttered, running his fingers through his plumy grey hair.
He gave a long thoughtful look behind him.
“Could it be…that?” He whispered almost to himself and disappeared deeper into the back of the store.
Edalyn waited wondering what wand he would bring out this time.
Several seconds passed and Mr. Ollivander reappeared with another box. Smaller than the last but bigger than the first. He opened it to reveal a paler reddish wood.
“This one here is made of Cherry wood, Thunderbird tail feather, 11 1/4 inches.” He smiled as he handed Edalyn the wand.
As soon as Edalyn touched the wand she felt a surge of power course through her.
“This…this is it!” She said confidently.
Giving it a decisive wave and bright golden streams of light erupted from the tip.
“Ahh success!” Ollivander explained clapping his hands together. “You have found your partner and I expect you shall accomplish great things together.”
“Thanks old man!” Edalyn beamed holding her wand in one hand and handing Ollivander the money with the other. Edalyn then turned and promptly left to show off her new wand to her parents.
Ollivander stared after her with a thoughtful expression.
Yes indeed. He thought. What things might you accomplish together with your new partner…
