Scarlett had heard quite a lot about the T.Ruth controversy - though some people chose to liken it to a scandal. A contentious article about dhampirs, published under the pen name T.Ruth, informing the Hogwarts population of the dangers of dhampirs, of their inhumanity, their blood-craving nature, their sickly pallor, and how they live alongside the human students. Of course, this information was followed by tips and tricks on how to defend yourselves against said dhampirs, including different spells that could assist you in calling for aid, come the event where you might be attacked by a dhampir. Finally, the article ended with a note saying that if anyone had any information about incidents involving dhampirs attacks or whereabouts, they could bring them to the Headliner Office for T.Ruth.

Scarlett...had no idea what to feel about all of it. Whilst she didn't personally know any dhampirs, she had her fair share of non-human friends. Okay fine, she had one non-human friend, but Scarlett deemed one quite enough to make a judgement about other non-humans, and that judgement was that they were nice and decent and just like any other witch or wizard. But then again, the T.Ruth article painted dhampirs in such an inhuman way. As if they weren't the average enough students she had collected a towel from at the Trial by Fear. As if they were evil, fanged predators walking unchecked throughout Hogwarts.

So she decided she needed more information. It was unlike Scarlett, to be hunting for knowledge. People knew that. They knew she wasn't a scholar or an academic by any means. However, if it was to do with either her safety, or wrongful discrimination against her peers, Scarlett was willing to do her research. And what she needed to find out was this - were dhampirs as dangerous as T.Ruth had made them out to be?

After all, she could hardly stand submissive in the face of injustice, especially when she had a friend who knew what that injustice felt like all too well. So that was why, after classes had finished on Tuesday, she was standing outside the Headliner door, ready to dig up and read over the old T.Ruth article. After, she might skulk around the two dhampirs she had seen at the trials - Nico and Howard, was it? - to see if they were really as terrible as T.Ruth had claimed.

Speaking of the Trial, it had seemed like a futile but well-meaning way to fight alongside the backlash that the article had received. Splashing unsuspecting students with blood-flavoured melted lollipops, judging their reactions and using that to promote inter-school unity? Scarlett had gotten a token probably because she had said thank you to the girl dhampir - Nico. It was just rewarding students for basic human decency at this point. And the students who hadn't gotten a token were the ones who had outwardly shown signs of distress. Who wouldn't? It was nothing to do with dhampirs - it was to do with the fear of being doused in actual blood.

She had figured that the Thomas boy and the caretaker meant well. But that second trial did not seem very logical.

Anyway, Scarlett couldn't come to a proper conclusion without hard evidence, so all of her thinking, her musings and her contemplation wouldn't do any good without some proof. So she opened the door to the Headliner Office and stepped in, ready to hunt for some old articles.

chill, it's only chaos

It was a quiet day in the Headliner office. There was no immediate deadline coming up, which would have meant a bustling office, the rustling of papers, discussions of the graphics team, pets running underfoot. When they had an issue scheduled, the space tended descend into a wonderful chaos, but there was no such thing at the moment.

Dee had stopped by the office to retrieve her favourite quill, which she had forgotten there a few days ago, neatly tucked into the cup she used to hold other, lesser quills, along with a couple pens and pencils she'd brought from Whitehaven. The cup had been a present from a friend back home when she'd told them she was going to be attending a boarding school; it depicted the view over their harbour, a reminder of home. She'd stayed to take a few notes about an idea for an article she'd had yesterday, and then just drifted off into mindlessly scribbling on the parchment, forming a border of abstract patterns along the edge of her notes.

There was no reason to hurry elsewhere, honestly. She was caught up on schoolwork, was not on patrol duty for the day, and the duelling season had ended the week before, with a frustrating defeat for Ravenclaw. They'd ended up second place in the tournament. Not good enough.

The sound of the door opening caused her to raise her head, glancing over to identify the newcomer. Scarlett had joined the newspaper team a few months after Dee had, they had worked together loosely when discussing the layouts and graphics for Dee's articles. A more recent - and more unpleasant - memory connected to the girl were an event they'd both been part of only just over a week ago. The Ravenclaw's expression darkened at the thought, still indignant at the trials, the execution of something that should have been a positive experience, could have been used to set a hopeful sign at this school. Not that she'd expected any better of Thomas Lestrange, she'd felt disgusted nevertheless. It was odd, all those events surrounding dhampires in recent months, even here at the Headliner, and Dee couldn't help feeling like she didn't know enough, like she was missing pieces she should know about.

Still, Scarlett seemed likable enough. The two of them had been on the same team during the second part of the first trial, and although they had lost that round, Scarlett had performed her task perfectly. Hence, she greeted the girl with a bright smile, setting down her quill to skip towards the Gryffindor, suddenly starved for some conversation. "Hi Scarlett!" she chirped, curiosity setting her eyes alight. The girl looked... serious, somehow. Almost grave. "What brings you here?"
