Violet had gone home for the start of the summer holidays, since Hogwarts was closing until August first, which was when the summer camp was being held. To be honest, Violet was happy to be home that year. She had received a letter from her mother a week beforehand, which explained that her brother had come home after leaving for two whole years.

The news was that he was getting married, and that over the time he had left his family’s house he had found a soulmate. From what Violet had heard, he was going to get married to Adeline Charlton. And that was...Everly Charlton's sister. Violet already knew Everly from Hogwarts, but things hadn’t gone well with the pair of them, due to Violet’s lack of communication and healthy social interaction. Clearly Violet hadn’t made a good impression on the Gryffindor girl, and Violet had no idea what she was going to do when they were going to become sisters in law? Fight forever and wish that they weren’t family? Though Violet didn’t have any desire for Everly to become part of her family, she was eager to give her one more chance to make amends and get along. That couldn’t be too hard, right?

The only one that didn’t very much agree with the wedding plans was Violet’s father. Lionel and Christopher Carrington had a large history of fights, including the time in which Christopher had left his stepfather blind in one eye due to casting diffindo on him angrily the day he had left the manor. The memory of the day in which her brother had turned around, and left, running towards the outside world without even saying goodbye on her birthday always remained with her.

It was one day before the wedding, and her family was at the dining table eating breakfast. While Violet’s mother couldn’t stop talking about the wedding, the tension between Violet’s brother and father in the room was great. Her mother didn’t seem to notice, for she kept talking as if nothing had happened. She was clearly excited and proud that her son had finally found a wife, and she was promising him a large and fancy wedding when Mr. Carrington got up off the table, his breakfast half finished and turned to the library, his face serious as ever. When Violet excused herself, she went to her room to study and play with her pet frog, when she walked down the stairs of the manor once more, when the family was called to greet the Charlton’s at last.

What.

That had been Everly's first reaction, back in May. It seemed so long ago, when she thought about it now. Back then, she'd thought two months was barely enough time to plan and hold a wedding. And yet, two months had been over that quickly, and now Everly, accompanied by the group of Charltons, were arriving at Carrington Manor. Her first year went by so quickly, and she couldn't quite believe it. She hadn't had another interaction with Violet that was quite like the first since it had happened, and if she were being honest, Everly was kind of scared to see how Violet would act when they did meet.

While Everly's reaction was conflicted, she could tell her family's was not. When Everly had returned from school for summer break, the home was in a frenzy. Everly's father, Everet, was overjoyed for the couple. Everet eagerly offered up his help with the wedding, but knowing his sense for design, it was bound to be a mess. Adeline could not decline, though, not after seeing their father so happy. And so it was up to Everly's mother, Charmaine, to fix it. Charmaine did, but rather reluctantly. She was happy for Adeline and Christopher like her husband, of course, but she was also somewhat wary. The Carringtons were a family - shall we say - 'higher' in the pure-blood society than the Charltons had been at the moment, since it was only recently that they'd started to make their way back up the social ladder. Charmaine was forced to get into the excited, giddy wedding-frenze mood, though, for Adeline's sake. The rest of their family seemed to have no real opinion about the matter - they did not know Violet Carrington, although they had heard of their family, they hadn't formed an opinion, as far as Everly knew.

Everly's mind, however could not rest on the matter. Even though she'd had a lot of practice pondering and questioning what was about to happen the past two months, it still made her mind hurt. How had Adeline and her fiancé met? And, how had that fiancé, out of all people, turned out to be Violet's brother? Everly wasn't questioning their love for each other, nor was she going to judge Christopher before she met him. She was happy for them, obviously, and it was a wedding - extravagant events like the aforementioned, all of which she loved. Everly realized she didn't know quite enough about Christopher Carrington, though, and so she slid over into the seat next to Adeline's.

Adeline's face had lit up with joy. Her face was positively glowing. Everly understood that this was her special time, and she was worried she would ruin it. Adeline's fingers, hands, and whole body was shaking, trembling, and Everly wasn't sure out of what - shock, excitement, nervousness. Perhaps all three, and more.

"Adeline?"

Adeline came to with a start, Everly's prompting causing her to wake from her dream land of giddiness.

"Wha - oh, Everly. Yeah?"

"Are..." Everly hesitated, not wanted to come on too strong. "Do you think you're ready?"

The real question Everly had asked, though, the meaning - am I ready?

Everly was afraid she already knew the answer.

Adeline smiled, as if knowing clearly what Everly meant. Adeline always could read her like an open book. "Don't worry," she assured Everly. "I know very well what I'm doing," she said, with a small, self-assured smile on her face.

-

It wasn't long before the Charltons arrived at Carrington Manor. Everly's footsteps towards the grand, large house were small, tentative and careful. It wasn't before long that the Carringtons came to greet the family of five, and the group was led into the grand hall, a place for them to chat, and meet each other, it was presumed. Everly let her gaze slip over each of the members of the Carrington family. Violet's father, a regal man with a scary looking one eye. Along with her mother, Violet's family made Everly very intimidated. And then, Adeline's fiancé, Christopher Carrington. Everly studied him for a while, trying to find what Adeline saw in him.

And then, Violet. Everly was unsure what to say. She still had no idea what Violet thought of her, and she didn't want to ruin or make that image of her worse. "H-hi," Everly murmured slightly, her gaze ever so slightly drifting towards the ground.

When the doors of the manor were opened, Violet's piercing eyes went to stare right at Everly as she gave her the most fake smile ever. Violet rolled her eyes aferwards. She just couldn't help but feel like the fact that everly and Violet were going to be...sisters in law? Those two girls were very unlikely to become frienemies at the most.

"H-hi"

"Hello Everly." Violet said, nodding at her. Then, she looked behind her (or wherever she was), at Adeline, whom Violet didn't know. She had no idea why Christopher liked that blond Charlton girl. Violet didn't see anything cool or interesting about her, and she didn't see anything she was going to be loved for. Violet rolled her eyes at Adeline again, as she loked at Everly once more. She was going to ask the Gryffindor how she was, when her mother started to greet the family.

"Why hello Mrs. Charlton, how wonderful it is to have you here." Her mother started, looking at Everly's mother from top to bottom and from bottom to top once more. Violet held her breath as she looked at the floor in embarassment. Why can't mother be more...cheerful? she thought, s her cheeks turned a shade of pink. She wasn't cheerful at all herself, but she wasn't as judgy as her mum, that was for sure.

Then...her dad came. He didn't really have anything to do with the wedding, since Christopher wasn't his actual father, but since it was indeed his house, he had to see that the guests were comfortable... and that they were adequate enoguh to be in the manor. The Charlton family were pretty, that was true, but they were very new to this rich-ish life, and would probably not know what manners were, in his opinion. He looked at them with one eye (since the other was in blind, duh >:P) and walked away to the library to do whatevaer he had to do there. Not even a hello, or a welcome, or a wave. Well that was rude.

Blushing more now, Violet was feeling sorry for Everly and her family. "I'm...sory." Violet said, as she tried to look into the Gryffindors eyes. Thankfully, her mother broke the tension, commanding Everly and Violet to go do "something", since the Charltons were staying for quite a while and since Everly was going to be Violet's sister in law, they had to become closer nd be more friendly. Though she didn't say all of that, it was clear that it was what Mrs. Carrington meant. "Run along now and do something you two while me and Mrs. Charlton organize the wedding."

Violet gave a more friendly smile at Everly and she shoved her aarm jockingly as she turned around to show the Gryffindor her room. But then, the most cringy moment of the whole pre-wedding thing came. Violet's reaction was rolling her eyes, but her brother's reaction when looking at his fiance was clearly a wide smile as he bowed and took her hand () . The Slytherin audibly snorted and that was followed with a harsh glare that came from both her mum and brother. Violet rolled her eyes again and was much more pressured to go and show Everly her room now, to escape the clutches of her family's horrible humor.

To be glared at by someone Everly loathed as much as Violet caused her much anxiety. Violet’s gaze conveyed many things, like her feelings for Everly had not changed at all. Really, was Everly expecting Violet to be nice now just because they were going to become sisters-in-law? (That, in fact, had been exactly what Everly had been thinking.) Everly jut out her chin with determination. If Violet was going to mean, then Everly would return the favor. “Thank you so much for inviting us! We’re so happy to be able to… uh, celebrate this together.” Everly gave Violet and her mother a large smile, voice dripping with sugar in an attempt to cover up her pauses. “Your place is so… er, nice,” Everly said half-heartedly, grasping for something to be able to say. She took a look around. The place was indeed grand, grander than a place Everly had ever lived in herself. Chewing lightly on her lip, she turned back to their hosts, nothing left to offer up.

Everly was fuming. How did Violet manage to act so composed in front of others? Sure, Violet had grown up with it, but Everly hadn’t thought that acting like a pompous and snobby doll was that hard.

Thankfully, Violet’s mother swooped in to save the conversation. Everly’s mother seemed more too happy to jump into it, probably trying to save herself from the awkward mess Everly created. Charmaine chatted rapidly along with with Violet’s mother, while Everly took note of Violet’s reaction. Was she embarrassed by her mother? Everly herself hadn’t seen anything that Violet’s mother had done that seemed close to embarrassing, honestly, but perhaps that was just Everly.

Footsteps caused Everly to look up and spot a scary-looking man she assumed was Violet’s father stalk up. He looked their pity party up and down, and Everly wrinkled her nose lightly. Whoever this guy was, he looked like someone not to mess with, which was exactly the reason why he looked like someone Everly disliked. With a weird little scowl, the man would turn around and stalk back into his hole, or wherever he had came from.

Well, good riddance. That was how Everly had expected the whole Carrington clan to act like, and at least someone lived up to her expectations. Everly was tempted to ask why the dude had came out just to sniff around and then go back in, but she figured her mother probably would not appreciate it.

Violet apologized, something that was new. Everly felt a rush of sympathy. If that was how her father acted all the time, then there might have been a reasonable explanation for the way Violet always acted. While Everly was tempted to make some snarky remark about Violet’s relations, she figured her mother also probably would not appreciate it. Instead, with the slightest twitch of her lips, Everly would tell Violet quite sincerely, “It’s okay. I get it.”

Did she really, though? Everly wondered. No one in her family acted quite like that, and she couldn’t imagine spending twelve years with someone like that.

Violet’s mother told the two of them to go find something to occupy themselves with, and Everly nodded, still unsure how to address her. Violet’s smile actually seemed part-friendly, so Everly smiled tentatively back. Adeline’s fiancé kissed her hand in some weirdly sophisticated pompous fiancé thing. Violet’s audible snort gave Everly some confidence, and the Gryffindor let out a high-pitched giggle of her own. It wasn’t the action itself she found hilarious, but the totally in-love face Adeline had. If that was all it took to charm someone, Everly seriously doubted she could take it seriously. Adeline shot her a glare, but the daydreamy look in her eyes gave away the fact that she wasn’t really that mad.

@Everly Charlton

Having grown up in a family full of lies, Violet was familiar to the tone of voice Everly was using. Her soon to be sister in-law was the last person Violet knew that would be happy to be here, with her. The mutual feeling they had for each other was not even close to loathing, but enemies was an accurate word to describe it. The feeling of wanting to yell at Everly every time they looked at each other in the eyes was still there. Violet wanted to disown her brother for marrying her enemy's sister. He, of course did not know Everly and Violet's relationship, but Violet still hated him for that.

A nice place indeed, as Everly said, Violet's mansion was elegant, almost royal. Her family had money, there was no denying, but the Slytherin did not want to brag about it. At least she had a bit of empathy for those of... less social status than the Carrington family.

After she snorted, Violet heard that Everly giggled, causing the slytherin to react with a soft smile. Which was unusual from her, but maybe this family gathering was starting to warm her heart. Maybe, just maybe, with the Charlton and Carrington families mixing together, things would change.

Violet went upstairs, expecting Everly to follow her to her room. She opened the heavy doors to reveal a spacious dormitory, with an elegant king sized bed in the middle. Most of the bedroom was covered in colours from green to black and brown, maybe even hints of silver somewhere. The only thing that looked disorganized was the piles of books stacked on the floor, along with quills and bottles of ink and parchment rolls. Ollie, Violet's companion was happily croacking near the window.
- So, uhm, this is my room. You can sit wherever you want I guess...

Violet sat on the floor with her legs crossed, and Ollie hopped from the window to Violet's knee, her chest, or frog throat or however you call it rising and lowering as she breathed.
- Charlton, we need to talk about, well you know, all of this is happening all of a sudden and, well we arent really in good terms with each other. We have never been and I always thought we never would. But, you know, we cant just keep acting this...uh immaturely with one another when we are about to become sisters in a few days.

Did the sour, cold and anti social Violet Carrington just ask one of the people she felt most disgusted towards, Everly Charlton to... become friends? Just the thought of her sudden change of attitude made Violet sigh loudly as she looked at her hands that didn't stop shaking. She feared that Everly was going to yell something at her, tell her that there was no chance of them both becoming friends. She had never been open about her feelings to anybody, always responding in a rude way when she had the opportunity to make a new friend, a new aquintance, because she feared that they were going to judge her. But she soon realised that her attitude actually made things worse, but it was too late. Being like this rapidly mutated into Violet's personality.

A small spurt of pity began to grow in Everly's sad little sympathetic heart, which she immediately began shoving down. Everyone in Violet's family seemed so... composed. No, that wasn't the right word. It felt like a mask was covering their entire manor, yet to be shredded. Maybe this was why Everly disliked Violet so much, she pondered, because everything seemed so fake. She didn't know what Violet was truly like, underneath all of the barriers they'd put up, except that Violet was just snobby. Maybe there was someone entirely different behind the wall. Maybe there was a reason why Violet came off as so cold to everyone, just like the rest of her family.

When Everly glanced over towards Violet, she saw a smile on the Slytherin's face. That was new. Everly, in the few months she'd known Violet, had never seen her smile before. It didn't look weird - it just looked... different. Everly was open to learning more about where this hint of a smile came from.

Maybe, Violet wasn't as bad as Everly'd made her out to be.

She didn't get her hopes up too high though. This Violet was the same Violet that had berated her so many times in Potions class (she couldn't exactly blame her - Everly was, indeed, hopeless in Potions) and treated her like scum. That still seared into her mind, and she wouldn't be forgetting it anytime soon.

Violet began to head towards one of the staircases, and Everly, startled, froze. It took a moment for what was happening to register in her head, and she ran (nicely) to catch up to Violet, who led the pair into her room. She took it in slowly, a palette of greens and browns that melded well together. Dashes of Violet were present, hidden amongst the tip-top organized room, in the tiny pile of books and ink spread over an area of the floor.

Was it all fake?

Everly sat across from Violet, watching as her pet frog leaped lightly into her lap. Everly suddenly began to miss the presence of her cat, Tzahala, whom she'd left at their manor (after putting up a fight, of course. Charmaine had scolded her, saying "it wasn't proper to bring pets to another's home. Everly had responded, saying "i don't care"). She felt bare, without the warm cat to distract her.

She prepared herself for anything Violet might attack her with.

Wait.

Huh?

Violet's words weren't an insult or two, but the complete opposite.

Slowly, she began to decipher. Somehow, Violet had managed to insult her while offering to be friends.

Sisters.

Friends?

It seemed like a foreign idea, at least until this point. Was it even possible? she wondered, silently.

Everly had taken too long to answer. Snapping out of her haze, a movement had captured her attention, eyes diverted downwards.

Violet's hands were shaking.

Out of habit, Everly reached out and wrapped her hands around Violet's, creating a barrier. Everly had felt what Violet was feeling before (perhaps too many times) and knew that physical touch was important in keeping herself grounded.

Everly froze. What had she just done?

She felt like she was drowning in quicksand, digging a deeper hole for herself as they went.

A tear began to track its way down her face.

"Damn it, you made me cry too," she muttered, releasing one of her hands to wipe her face.
