Imagine a tropical beach. The kind with small, puffy white clouds barely visible in the sky. One with light blue waves gushing white foam on the warm sand. Different shades of blue in the water that hugs the beach. From icy white and pale blue hues to strong, dark colours that represent the dangers deep down in the ocean. Imagine a stormy sea where wind and water fight each other to get the upper hand. Imagine all these colours and feelings together. That’s what Avery Beth Greymoore’s irises look like. Her eyes could tell stories words would fall short for.

Avery’s hair was ,most of the time you saw her, tied in intricate braids or tight ponytails. She was raised to look flawless. At no point was she ever allowed to let down her hair, her parents told her so. Only to sleep, when no one could see her in a state that exposed and vulnerable. She hated it. Her go-to hairstyle contained to strands of her long, golden hair framing her face and the rest in a ponytail. Some occasions she would wear her straight and blonde hair in one complicated braid on the back of her head. This was usually when she had work to do. For example sport matches or horseback riding. Avery also had a passion for exploring. This exploring usually took place in hidden parts of the woods or some abandoned building she wasn’t supposed to enter. Greymoore’s appearance was considered beautiful in the Northern-American culture. Then again, her parents had a reputation to hold up so they would’ve done anything to avoid her not looking her best. She had a small, cute nose and blushed cheeks. A friendly and intriguing smile would glide on her face when she passed by you. On the other hand, when she relaxed her face muscles, her expression easily fell in what people these days call a “bitch-face”. She couldn’t help it, it’s just the way her face works. If anything would annoy her or she couldn’t reach her goals, it’s a face many would get to see. To distract people from being intimidated by her perhaps angry looking face, she loved wearing flowy, elegant summer dresses. A touch (or several) of glimmer never hurt anybody so she preferred stacking up her accessories. Earrings, several bracelets, necklaces and hair clips with crystals on them. Whatever made her feel joy when looking in the looking-glass. The description of Avery Beth Greymoore’s appearance would at first tell you she is the most girly girl you can find. Nothing is more true. Yes, she likes to dress up and look her best. “Don’t get filthy or lose control of your emotions”, was a phrase she heard occasionally. She was raised to be this way. But,… Avery was very good at keeping up appearances and making everyone around her believe she was this pretentious, egocentric person who felt better than all the others. In reality, she couldn’t feel better than anyone even if they were laying in the mud. Avery wasn’t afraid to get dirty to get things done. The girl could be described as loyal, motivated, caring and ambitious. If you hurt her friends, she would stop at nothing to get revenge. Even winning a game, she doesn’t mind bending the rules to teach someone a lesson.

Avery Beth isn’t a bad person. Au contraire, she is compassionate and loving. Unlike her kin. Her family has high standards and wouldn’t let anyone ‘lesser’ into their life. Avery wasn’t even allowed to have friends or have fun hobbies (other than the ones her parents found practical). They said friends were a distraction and if you can’t learn anything useful from a hobby then what is the point? Avery didn’t agree with that. Although she had a gift for causing trouble, she tried her best not to get on her parents bad side. That’s why she didn’t tell them about her adventures. These adventures would only happen when they weren’t home or when she snuck out of the house at night. She loved discovering secret places and writing about them in her book. Yes, she has a travelogue in which she wrote down where she found certain places and what she found interesting about them. Even the boring ones she would write about, simply because you never know when a hidden building in the middle of nowhere could be useful. Avery frequently liked to imagine finding something magical she wasn’t supposed to find and having to hide it away from crooks who would search for said item and wanted to hurt her for taking it. Her imagination went crazy like that sometimes. A daring, risky adventure where she was the lead character who had to save the world from people with bad intentions. Then she would gather a group of righteous and brave heroes to fight for the greater good.
Alas, that was unlikely to happen as she was just a boring school girl with rich parents. Well, not exactly rich but definitely not struggling either. She thought her family was just above average class. Her mum and dad’s big egos were aspects she was never going to understand. They were just like everyone else so why act like they were above them? She didn’t hate them for it though, what she hated were the fancy parties and late-night dinners they had to host or go to. It was all so overblown and pompous.

Avery had a sense of proud about herself. Being high-born had nothing to do with it. She was proud of herself because she worked hard to achieve her goals. Avery Beth was an ambitious young lady with the heart in the right place. Her not being allowed to invite friends over or throw birthday parties didn’t stop her from making friends. Friends were very important to her, she was close to the few she had. They were real friends. She was extremely popular in school so she knew a lot of people and they knew her but she wouldn’t all consider them friends. More like acquaintances. Avery was a good student overall. Of course, every student has their weaknesses. Hers was getting distracted by fantasy. Instead of paying attention in class, her head would be elsewhere. Most likely in of the secret places she recently discovered. This would hurt her grades a significant amount. Using her wits she found ways to manage getting out from any detentions or failed assignments. Avery frequently found some leverage to receive a chance to redo her failed tasks. It’s not her fault magic was so fascinating. Ever since she was little she was eager to go to school and learn magic. You can imagine her enthusiasm when she learned she would go to Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. Avery being who she was and not being able to contain her excitement during her childhood. Which as mentioned before, got her into plenty trouble.

Another trait her parents were not fond of. Even though the girl tried not to get on her parents’ nerves, she managed to do so anyhow on a daily basis. Ever since the passing of her brother they were too focused on her, making sure she would be careful. The witch-to-be hadn’t told her friends about her brother. She didn’t want to be pitied by them or be treated differently. Avery held all her emotions in an one day they would come bursting out. It was inevitable. All she could do was hope she would be able to control herself when they did. She would do it for him. Her late little brother…. All she could think was he died way to young. No person should have to go so soon. Oh, how she missed him. She loved that boy so dearly. When he was born, she was so keen to be able to come home from school when she was older and tell him about all the magical events at school.. It was something she wouldn’t be able to do. In honour of him, she wanted to become the best witch in the land and make him proud. For him, she wanted to discover something, or invent something… Anything to make him proud. And get her parents to stop smothering her. The young boy had gone missing around Avery’s ninth birthday. They had searched far and wide, using every manner they could think of but the boy’s body was found three weeks later. He was found in a lake a few towns down the stream. No one could figure out how he got there or even how he could’ve gone out of the house by himself, he had not learned to swim yet as he was still a toddler. Her brother’s death had caused a change in Avery’s point of view on life. It was an event that changed her life forever. The accident even caused her to act more reckless and wild because she was angry that no one had seen the little boy strolling around by himself. No one had helped him when he assumedly fell into the water. From that point in her life, Avery seemed to be angry in general. She definitely could not stand anyone who refused to help others in need. It could only take one person, one letter, one call to save someone’s life.

In fact, it was anger that caused her first outing of magic. The day the police came by the house and told Avery’s family they had found her brother’s body. She had been so shocked and so full of anger and disbelief that no one had done more to find him. When Avery heard the news she ran into the kitchen. She had no control over her emotions and felt the urge to break something. She really wanted to throw or slam or kick something to pieces. So the girl opened a kitchen cabinet and grabbed one of the ceramic plates inside. Her parents could hear the loud crashing and splintering of plates from the front door, in a hurry they said goodbye to the officers and followed the sounds into the kitchen. They witnessed Avery throwing mugs and plates on the floor in a fit of rage when suddenly all kitchen cabinets slammed open by themselves and other kitchenware started flying out onto the ground. It was quite the spectacle for both Avery and her parents. The young witch had quite a lot of cleaning up to do afterwards. Since that day she had been learning to control her emotions and she managed quite well keep calm in innerving situations.
