Digging My Own Grave?
Banner Credit: Winnie HarperSolo for ErrandUsually the days of River Dewlight were filled to the brim with things to do. Were they important things to do? Not necessarily. Though on this day, for once, she had no clue what to spend her time with. She’d heard mentions of an errand being proposed. Landscaping… or digging weeds if you would.
Not really River’s favourite past-time, though she had good experiences with plant based activities in the past. Both from her time before Hogwarts, and at the school as well.
The task would involve digging though, and you’d only need one glance at the girl to see that muscles were not present. Or at least not very.
Oh well, she decided to give the assignment an attempt, it was a challenge, and she was not one to easily let a challenge down. And so she set off with her shovel in hand, looking for the perfect area to get to work.
What was she looking for? She didn’t really know herself. Part of her said she’d know when she saw it. River scanned the surrounding nature, trying to best imagine where the placement of new plants could be beneficial. And if not beneficial, at least aesthetically pleasing. That’s when she remembered the little spot next to the great lake. That one spot she’d spent most of her days during her first year at Hogwarts. Right next to the tree she climbed, when she met new friends for the first time. Her mind drifted, wondering where those girls were now. She hadn’t heard from them in years. She shook the thoughts away as she strode towards the great tree.
Beneath the large crown lay a flat stone. The one she’d sat on to read plenty of books. She wondered if anyone else now used this spot like she once did. If so, she’d want it to be pretty. Full of plants that would complement the surrounding beauty of the lake and the grounds.
At this time, it was quite overgrown with weeds and thorny shrubbery. Not particularly pleasant.
So before she could dwindle more on the past she once shared here, she dropped to her knees and began digging.
Digging and digging like she’d never dug before. It wasn’t as difficult as she’d imagined. With the right amount of leverage she got quite the work done relatively fast. The problems arose when she started to find thorns stuck in her clothing, and pricking her fingers on thistles and nettles. She was glad this would be out of the way by the end of this.
After a bit River took a step back to admire her work. All the uprooted plants lay in a pile next to the tree, and where they had once stood was a large hole with stirred soil and dirt. She wondered if she could lay her entire body down as she stared into the ground. Not that she would try to find out, there was no wish for her clothes to get any more filthy than they already were. When she was younger she’d often help her mother in the garden. There were countless times that she’d test her own abilities to dig holes, trying to find out if she would ever be capable of burying a body should the need occur. Now one might think this is unnatural behaviour in a child, but at least there were no harmful intentions. Also she never managed to dig a large enough hole back then, her arms were merely too puny and weak. She was at least happy there was some improvement since then. Maybe she would be able to dig her own grave some time in the far future after all.WC: 616
