A quiet hum of noise filled the library — pages swishing, pens scratching, the occasional hiss of anger or joy. Anja had a Charms essay to finish, and it certainly wasn’t going anywhere quickly. The blank parchment stared up at her, mocking her. She tapped the end of her quill against the table, her mind running blank of ideas. A blonde girl sat nearby in an armchair. Anja recognised her as a Gryffindor she’d seen wandering about recently. The girl never seemed to leave her little clique, walking around in a pack like some kind of gang. Anja hated people without a mind for themselves — independent thinking was one of her biggest values, and she would never pass it over.
Pulling out her sheet of notes, she began to write a plan for her essay in flowing handwriting. Planning always helped if you didn’t know what to do — learn your entrances and your exits, your weaknesses and your impeccable strategy. Besides, Charms wasn’t her favourite subject anyway. Transfiguration had always struck her as the most interesting, despite the thought that Slytherins only liked potions. Finishing off her third idea, she looked back up at the Gryffindor girl, studying her, trying to figure out what she was doing alone in the library. It was unusual for her, Anja noted, not being around her associates. Anja returned to her essay before the Gryffindor noticed her, not wanting to be caught. Her quill scratched along the parchment, and Anja thought about how she would not like this girl one bit.
