Anja's mother orchestrated sophisticated and subtle Christmas decorations in every inch of to castle, and the servants rushed about, preparing things for the feast that night — Christmas Eve.
On a higher floor, in her room, Anja was playing backgammon with her father. He'd judged that she was good enough to play with a harmless bet. Anja, being only nine, without much experience, simply picked a favour to win. Her father rolled a six and moved his last checker off the board, with one remaining in Anja's side.
"I win," he stated casually. Anja shrugged. It was only a favour, anyway. He stood up and giving some excuse about having to help with decorating, left the room. Anja rearranged her board, unsure of what to do until Violet arrived. Soon, Anja heard a shout from her mother. It seemed her dress for the evening had arrived.
Anja hated the way her mother enjoyed to dress her up in those stuffy wizard robes. A few of the dresses her mother owned were very nice, but none of them were small enough for Anja. This time, her mother had picked out an elaborate Tudor-era-esque affair with fur lined sleeves and a lot of silver accenting. The body of the dress was an extremely dark green, almost black, and the inner lining seemed to be some kind of silk. The dress looked far too large for Anja's slight nine-year-old frame — perhaps better suited to someone a few years older — , but her mother had that look on her face which quite clearly said, we'll pin it if we have to, I don't care. She ran out of her room to where here mother was, and her mother took her hand and led her to the drawing room, where the dressmaker stood. She stepped up onto the stool, and the dressmaker began pinning her skirts up around her. The fur lined sleeves had to be pulled back fully and the skirts were pulled up in a hopefully artful way.
Anja's mothers voice suddenly rang out over the top of the paper she was reading. "You said that friend of yours was coming — what was her name?" Anja startled at the sound, nearly taking a pin to the neck as the dressmaker slipped.
"Yes, Violet's coming," she replied cordially, "Violet Carrington." Anja smiled at the mention of her friend's name.
"And will she be bringing her own friend?"
"Maybe. I don't know, but prob—" Anja's voice cut of again as she dodged yet another pin from the clumsy dressmaker.
The dressmaker finally stopped sticking pins in the fabric after Anja felt as if she had passed the mark of hedgehog and was leaning into porcupine territory, with the amount of pins sticking in her. The metal encrusted thing was lifted off her head, and Anja collected herself and made for the door.
Before she could leave, her mother grabbed her arm. "Be careful with that Violet," she said. "I don't trust her, and I wouldn't want for our family to be damaged." She smiled, and let Anja go.
For our family.
Damaged
Anja thought about how her mother said 'family' instead of 'you'. It was to be expected really.
She was pulled from her surprisingly deep thoughts by a call of, "Miss Carrington here to see you!" Anja bounded to the doors, and watched out into the cold for her friend.
