History/Background Story: Born in Aberdeen, Scotland to Hama and Makoto Uchi, recent immigrants from Japan, even as a babe Yasuo was quiet. Makoto was worried about this, and urged demurely for examination, or perhaps dedicated coaxing, but his wife would not see it. Magical by lineage and half-goblin herself, Hama assured her muggle husband that younglings of any magic are known to exhibit differences from those without, and that more ordinary boisterousness would show itself later on as their child grew. Yasuo remained quiet and unsocial, hardly speaking without prompting, prone to frequently lapsing into rough vocalizations or sonorous tones to express himself. He could read and write at the average age, could walk and balance well, and even showed good empathy when pulled aside and tested... he just couldn’t seem to see the point in interacting more than was necessary; that is, not until Hama pulled young Yasuo aside herself and urged him to make friends, even just for one year.
Helped by the fact he was enrolled in a primary school catering to those with foreign parents(though perhaps, not more foreign than needing a translator, as Magic certainly would be a shock) and thus a supposedly more accepting environment, the young boy agreed and soon, was slowly beginning to make connections throughout his age group. Unfortunately, those connections were deceitful.
Blissfully, carelessly cruel, as children are often want to do, no one in his school could misinterpret his short stature, his mannerisms, or his hesitance as anything but purely and utterly Other compared to everyone else. Starting with just pushing the worse school chores onto him, ramping up into sabotaging his crafts and tripping, pushing, or pelting him in the halls, while Yasuo never quite confirmed any one incident wasn’t an accident like they always claimed, he couldn’t say he was surprised when at just 7, his magic manifested to break him out of a closet he’d been stuck in the whole day.
After that, Yasuo finally changed... though, his parents wouldn’t agree that it was at all better. His noises ceased, his opinions and outbursts shrank to nothingness, and although he was no less reserved and polite, his once merely occasional bouts of worry spiraled into such all-encompassing anxiety that he became the official target of ridicule for his peers. Even in front of his parents, he was nothing short of paranoid more often than not, jittery and readied to flee in a way that worried the couple greatly.
In truth, this anxiety was true — his confidence and assured ness has degraded badly over the school year, and it hadn’t yet recovered, if it ever would. Yet ever since being so obviously betrayed, Yasuo developed a harshly guarded outlook out of the desire to be safe, and this manifested in bursts of panic and intrusive thought that threatened to consume him daily. To cope with this, he chose what seemed like the best option at the time; fulfill the social role interacting with others had shown he would be forced into no matter what, and hide any traits that could bring further ire or instability to the balance of bullying he knew now to brace for. He brought every speck of his neuroses to the forefront, allowing them to consume his outer appearance and actions, and within the depths of his mind a boy who just wanted to stay quiet and polite shaped himself into a razor’s edge of voracious learning, in order to one day ensure he would never be betrayed like that again, would never again be harmed by the actions of another or be limited by his own ignorance of other people and their societies.
This outlook, as calculated yet unsteady as it was in such a young mind, is what carried Yasuo all the way to 11 years old, when upon realizing just how the Hat sorted based on truth rather than appearances, he was forced to concede that playing the victim to avoid becoming a much larger, actual target wasn’t going to be a viable strategy when spending seven years around other people just as guarded as he was. Still, determination unwavering, he took himself and his mask into the nest of Snakes... who knows what the future holds in store next.
