Haley couldn't take it anymore. For weeks now, she had been getting these looks. Looks of curiosity, contempt, insecurity and fear. But it wasn't just the looks, no also the whispers as soon as she entered a room, as soon as she walked through the hallway and other students noticed her, as soon as she entered the common room. It was amazing how this event that had happened in front of so few students but could spread so quickly. But much worse, people were making up more and more stories, and Haley had lost track of all the rumors about her.

She knew that her true friends were behind her. She knew she wasn't alone, but she still was. She was in the moments when she walked through Castle alone and felt all those stares on her. It was her in the moments when she woke up in the night sweating because she had been haunted by her nightmares again for weeks. She was now.

The school day was over and most had headed to the Great Hall for dinner, but Haley had not. Even though she had intended to, she had changed her mind again. She wasn't hungry anyway, as she often was, and she wouldn't stand it a minute longer. Those looks from the other tables and the heads that went together as soon as Haley walked past them. Just in the brief moments before she had retreated here, it had happened again. And that was the trigger. She couldn't stand over it anymore, or ignore it. It made her not only angry, but sad.

But she would not drop her facade in front of the others. She would not show weakness, she had to show that she was above it. That she didn't mind, even if it was a lie. And so she kept her head up, put on her proud look and walked here. Here she was alone. Here she could drop the facade.
And she did. She propped herself up on the sink with both hands and took a few breaths. She didn't know whether to scream or cry, so she looked silently into the mirror in front of her. But what she could see in it was not her. This was not the warm and cheerful Haley who was always laughing. This was a different girl. Eating far too little, she had lost weight over the past few weeks and her cheeks were slowly starting to fall into her face. Thanks to the lack of sleep, she had black circles under her eyes and when you looked at her face it didn't seem like she had ever laughed in her life.

Her gaze was fixed on her tired eyes as she disengaged her hands from the sink and turned on the faucet. She now leaned down and splashed ice cold water on her face. She had to collect herself. She couldn't let all this affect her like this. She had to be strong and she would be. She would not deny who she was and the talent she possessed and so now she looked back into her eyes through the mirror. "You can do this. You're strong." She spoke now in the foreign language that so few understood. But she was familiar with this hissing sound and that was part of her. That was her talent and she was proud of it.

Laura walked into the Abandoned Toilets and saw a girl in there she knew her name was Haley Rose, because she had heard the rumours that she was a parselmouth. Laura knew she was a parselmouth, but didn't want to make a big deal out of it because it might hurt Haley's feelings. But Laura did think it was a very special skill and there isn't a lot of people that are parselmouth's.
Laura offered a scared smile to Haley, she knew Haley was a nice person, but she was nervous in case she said something wrong and Haley got the wrong idea about her. Laura is a very nice person, but she can get very annoyed so you don't want to get on the wrong side of her.
Laura began playing with her fingers not knowing what to say to Haley she then began muttering to herself "It's not nice saying rumours about someone else how would they like it if someone made rumours about themselves". She finally had the courage to say something to Haley she said "Hi Haley, I'm Laura how are you?" she finished offering a nervous smile to Haley "By the way I haven't made up any rumours about you because how would the people that made the rumours feel if I made rumours about themselves" she finished looking nervously at Haley.

Haley had come here because she was sure she could be alone and gather herself. But just as she was giving herself courage and strength, she heard someone enter the room. It was not usual for Haley to mind but in the current situation she could only be annoyed by it. "Great." She spoke again in the foreign tongue that hardly anyone understood. And she did so consciously. She hadn't turned around, but simply hoped that if the person realized who she was, they would just leave the room again on their own.

But that was not the case. So now Haley turned around and looked into an unknown face. An unknown face that smiled at her. And at that moment she felt bad again. She wasn't usually like this and the girl couldn't help her situation after all. So Haley tried to remember the real Haley. The one who is so cheerful and open-hearted. And so Haley gave the girl a quick little smile.

But just as Haley was about to leave again, she started talking. At first Haley assumed that she just didn't know who she was, but Haley was wrong. The girl knew very well who she was and so Haley stopped leaning against the sink and looked at her for a moment with a blank stare. She ignored the first part Laura noticed. "Hi Laura." She hesitated for a moment, looking at her suspiciously. It was unusual for her to be addressed like that, even though the one across from her knew of her talent.

"You're right. That's pretty crap to talk about others like that but I guess I'll just have to get over it." Haley wouldn't drop her strong facade, not in front of Laura. There were few people Haley really showed herself in front of these days. What she was really feeling and how hard it was for her. But she had just said it to herself. You can do this. You're strong. "There's nothing I can do about it anyway, except be a better person than the others and not spread rumors about others." She rolled her eyes and put her hands in her pants pockets.

"But I'm glad to hear you didn't spread rumors about me." At that sentence, Haley couldn't help a sarcastic laugh. It wasn't meant maliciously toward Laura, but anyone could say that, after all. And slowly Haley doubted that there were really many left who didn't talk about it and added something to all the stories.

"But whatever you have heard, I can assure you that there is no reason to be afraid of me." And with that sentence, Haley smiled and winked at Laura.

"I was a bit nervous, but I would love to get to know you" said Laura smiling at Haley. "You seem nice because I overheard someone saying that your mean, but your really nice" she said looking nervously at Haley, "I've been trying to tell everyone that your really nice, but no one listens but I was hoping that maybe you'd like to be friends?" she asked. Laura was really happy because everyone is spreading rumours about Haley. "By the way Haley anyone that spreads rumours about you don't pay attention to them because otherwise they'll carry on" and she sat on a bit of rock that was on the floor "A lot of people will spread rumours about you, but don't pay attention to them because sometimes their just jealous that you've got and extraordinary talent and they don't". "On the holidays if you want you can come meet my parents they live in a mini mansion so there will be enough room" she said to Haley smiling. Laura went in her backpack and found a watch it said it was 9:00 Laura was happy that she was talking to Haley she felt like Haley was her new best friend.

Haley laughed briefly, but she wasn't surprised that Laura was nervous when she met Haley. After all, the silliest things were said about her but even if Haley was everything, there was one thing she certainly wasn't and that was mean. At least not when no one was being mean to her or her friends. And even though Laura and Haley had only known each other for a few minutes, it pleased her that Laura was sure Haley was nice. She was, although not everyone currently believed that.

"You really don't have to try to convince others that I'm nice." she laughed again now. Kind of funny that someone was taking a stand for her who didn't even know her. She didn't want to be ungrateful, which was why she didn't elaborate, but secretly Haley hoped she wouldn't keep doing it. Haley wanted to fight her battles alone. "But yeah, I'd love to be friends with you." Haley replied quickly with a smile. She couldn't remember the last time someone asked her that. By now, all her friendships just happened, no questions asked. But that didn't bother her, she found it cute in its own way.

"Yeah I know that, but don't worry so much about me and my problems. I've got it all under control." Haley assured the Hufflepuff girl now, not wanting to talk about the subject any further. It was annoying because it was with her all the time and she enjoyed the short moments when it was forgotten. Unfortunately, those moments were always far too short.

"Thank you for the invitation. It might be difficult this summer as we're moving into a new house but happy to do it another time." Haley was really looking forward to her new home, but currently she couldn't really feel it anymore. Because she would be reuniting with her family for the holidays. Her mother. And currently she would rather do anything than that. But she really didn't want to worry about that now. She had enough other problems.

"Shouldn't you be at dinner?" asked Haley with a raised eyebrow. She was sure it would be ready soon and the students had to get back to the common rooms. The last thing she wanted now was detention.

Laura listened to Haley's reply saying that Laura didn't need to convince others she was nice, but Laura said "I'm going to anyway" said Laura fiercely "It's not nice having people talking behind your back" and she smiled at Haley.
But Laura said quickly trying not to ruin being friends with Haley "Thanks for being friends with me, not a lot of people talk to me" said Laura a bit sadly "But I'm glad you'll talk to me" and she gave a big grin to Haley revealing her white teeth.
Laura was happy to see that Haley was perfectly happy "Ok, but if you ever need my help I'm always here for you" and she hugged Haley Laura didn't want Haley to feel uncomfortable to she pulled away quickly.
Laura smiled nervously, Laura's quite a shy person, but when she asked a few people to be friends they usually accepted it and that made Laura happy her Aunt Lucy sent Laura a howler just because she wasn't in Ravenclaw.
"My Aunt Lucy wanted my to be in Ravenclaw, but I'm in Hufflepuff so she sent me a howler" admitted Laura she wanted to be honest with Haley if she was going to be friends.
"It's ok like you said maybe another time" said Laura grinning "And no I'm not at dinner because I'm not very hungry and everyone pretends I don't exist and they whack into me" said Laura sadly a tear in her eye.

Haley smiled at Laura's comment, she was definitely persistent and it was sweet that she stood up for Haley like that. She then smiled back at her in thanks. It was strange to have this conversation, because Haley just wanted to forget, to stop worrying about it and switch off for a brief moment but at the same time it was a nice feeling to hear that not everyone thought that way of her.

"Of course." Replied Haley, why shouldn't she be friends with Laura either, after all she was nice and hadn't done anything that could have upset Haley. But at the same time she was sorry to hear that she didn't have many friends and not many talked to her. Once again, Haley realized that you were never alone with problems. Far too often you only saw your own begrudging situation, but if you looked closer for just a moment, you realized that everyone carried their own little or even big baggage.

"Oh, thank you." Laughed Haley surprised by the sudden hug, but returned it. It was perhaps something she needed less, but maybe something Laura needed. It was funny, after all they were in the same year but this situation reminded Haley of a little sister. She didn't have any siblings and many times she had wished for some but instead she had her cousins who were her brothers. Especially Ian, but now she was not very fond of him.

"I'm sorry your aunt sent you a howler and that's even less of a reason than it was with my mom." Haley was getting angry and it was evident in her voice. Were adults no longer thinking about their actions or what was going on? "Let me tell you one thing and never forget this, you are not just defined by your house and just because you aren't in Ravenclaw doesn't mean you aren't smart either. Just because you're not in Gryffindor doesn't mean you're not brave." Haley looked at Laura forcefully, and it was important to her that she take those words seriously, because she didn't want no matter who to let something like that get them down. "The Hat made that decision and I'm sure it was the right decision for you too. Don't let opinions like that get you down!"

Haley now took a step toward Laura and put her arm around her, pulling her a little closer and looking over at her, smiling broadly. "You'll be fine. And if the Hufflepuffs think they can ignore you, you just eat at our table next time." She offered, trying to cheer her up a bit. Haley was sure that Laura had just met the wrong people so far. She knew some students also Hufflepuffs who would never treat anyone else like that.
