An Icy 'Friendship'
PRIVATE THREAD WITH
@GINGER CROWDY 29/1/21 DATE
TBA OUTFITLucia Fox couldn't ice-skate. She'd always wanted to learn, however, so once the lake froze over and she had cautiously tested that it was safe by sliding out larger and larger rocks before recalling them with the Levitation Charm, she borrowed some skates from a friend and wobbled out onto the ice.
It was harder than it looked. The ice was slippery and you couldn't just walk, you had to glide. And, as Lucia soon discovered, it was hard to 'glide' on what was essentially a pair of shoes with blades strapped to the bottom. It was hard enough to stand still, let alone moving, and Lucia stayed near the edge of the lake with her arms out and her knees locked and she tried with all her might not to fall over.
Then Lucia noticed a tree with a branch hanging near-horizontally by the lake and grabbed onto it gratefully, edging her way along on her skates. She was obviously new to 'this whole skating thing', and moved carefully, as though certain that she would fall in if she fell over. This was true, as it happened. All the Hufflepuff could think about was the huge volume of water beneath her feet. She shivered. If Lucia fell in there, she was afraid she'd never get out.

Sorry for such a late reply!Lucia was doing fine. She was just fine inching along the edge of the frozen lake on her borrowed ice skates, glove-clad hands firmly gripping the branch. The part-Veela didn't want to admit to herself that she was annoyed. It had looked so easy, when she'd seen other people do it! In the winter of her first year, Lucia had watched from the sidelines, huddled in her coat, as students flew about on the ice and longed to join them, but she hadn't dared. Now, she finally had the chance, and Merlin's pants was she failing at it. Physical activity really wasn't her thing it seemed - even ice skating.
At least there wasn't anyone else here to witness her failure. Well, anyone apart from the pink-haired first year who glided elegantly out onto the lake, obviously practised in the art of skating. The girl practically skipped around on the ice, dancing and twirling as though her skates were a part of her, and Lucia had to stop herself from staring. Instead, she huffed under her breath. Merlin, why was the world so unfair?! Surely it wasn't right for this little first year to have so much talent when Lucia obviously had none. "Show-off," Lucia muttered to herself, but it didn't make her feel any better, not really. "Stupid show-off." Why did it matter to her so much? The girl was just a first year, Lucia was pretty sure. It wasn't as if this was Briar, who would certainly rub it in just to see her sister squirm - Lucia was pretty sure that Briar couldn't ice-skate any more than she could, anyway. This was just an insignificant first year whom Lucia would hopefully never have to talk to.
But then, her thoughts were broken by a sound which, for a moment, Lucia struggled to associate with anything. Then it hit her: that was the sound of splintering ice. Body moving on autopilot, she tried to sprint back to the edge of the lake but fell, clumsy in her skates, to the ice. It didn't hurt as much as she had thought it would, but it still hurt a little, and she tried her best to ignore it as she didn't so much as crawl as slither back onto dry, cold land. Mother of Merlin, she was freezing! Lucia put her hand over her eyes to shield herself from the sun and looked out over the lake. There was the gap in the ice where it had broken, but where was the pink-haired girl? That was when it really began to sink in. The first year must have gone too far out onto the ice! Lucia remembered in a sudden cold rush of clarity the warning her pen-pal had given her about the frozen lake. Well, the Gryffindor's words had certainly been useful to Lucia, but this girl wasn't so lucky.
A horrifying glimpse of wet pink hair. A sudden thought. A mad scramble towards her bag. A precious moment spent finding her wand. Finally, Lucia got ahold of the stick of blackthorn and stood up hurriedly, pointing it out towards the lake. Though she was sweating, and not from the cold, she still kept her wand firmly in her hand and moved it in a perfect swish-and-flick motion. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Nothing happened. "Wingardium Leviosa! Wingardium Leviosa!" Lucia was almost in tears now. If this girl died from hypothermia, surely it would be her fault. She was a duellist! She was supposed to be good at spells! Lucia took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, visualising the girl rising from the waters, pulled by her levitated clothes. "Wingardium Leviosa!"
Thank Merlin. Her vision seemed to come true as the girl jerked upwards and out of the water, held upwards by her soaked clothes. Lucia struggled to keep the girl aloft but managed to move her wand, directing the girl onto the bank just before her strength ran out and the girl dropped onto the grass. "Oh Merlin!" Lucia gasped out, and rushed towards where the girl was lying on the grass. "Fricking Merlin's fricking pants!" She dropped to her knees next to the girl, wand slipping out of her hand onto the floor, almost forgotten. Merlin! What were you supposed to do in this kind of situation?! Lucia had never learned first aid! "We need to get you to the Hospital Wing, now. Can you walk?"
