Shiawase is short and slight. She has short, curly black hair and dark brown eyes which are big and slightly downturned. Her skin is dark brown and covered in freckles. She's frequently seen making use of aqua crutches or sitting in her aqua wheelchair, always wearing a back brace.

UPDATE: This was true, but since an incident occurred when trying to magically heal her, she is now paraplegic. She no longer uses crutches, and her wheelchair is now a Hogwarts issued enchanted wheelchair. Details in trunk.

Shiawase is a happy, optimistic, friendly girl. She greets each day and each person with a smile. But just because she is friendly doesn't mean she isn't assertive - she stands up for herself and others. She likes to joke that even without a full spine, she has more backbone than most anyone else she comes across. She takes her studies very seriously and spends most of her time reading and taking notes. She can come across as a bit of a know-it-all, and any time anyone has a medical problem, she launches into a story as to how her mom treated a patient with those same symptoms once, and it turned out to be a life-threatening diagnosis and she saved their life! Then she demands that person get it looked at by a professional immediately. She fancies herself a voice of reason, and often says things like, "Let's be reasonable!" or "Let's think about this logically." She tries maybe too hard to be independent, not asking for help even when she needs it. She's always trying to prove that anything her siblings could do, she could do better.

Shiawase has spina bifida myelomeningocele. This condition means her spine has an opening through which membranes and nerves were pushed as a baby. While surgery has corrected this condition (done a few days after birth), it has not corrected the damage done to the nerves, but because the opening was further down the spine, she could walk with crutches. The muscles are spastic and weak, so she alternates between wheelchair and crutch use. She has a shunt in her brain to address her hydrocephalus - accumulation of fluid in the brain.

Born May 5th, 2009 in Hockley Heath, England, she is the youngest of 10 children. She has 5 brothers and 4 sisters, all of which are muggles. Her mother's a doctor - a general practitioner to be more specific, and her dad's a stay-at-home dad. He babied Shiawase extra because of her condition, and she was acutely aware of her special treatment. When she was 5, her dad was helping her make lunch while she was in her wheelchair and she snapped, "I could do it myself if this place would let me!"

After that, her father and mother moved to a place with full accessibility for her, and she proceeded to do the lion's share of cleaning and cooking around the house (of course, at 5, most of her "cooking" was just making sandwiches, but still). She really loves to cook things from scratch now that she's older.

She gets along well with all her siblings, and was decently popular in primary school for her disposition. She may consider her siblings rivals, but they're still her best friends.

UPDATE: After the sorting hat ceremony, where she was sorted into Slytherin, she was taken to St. Mungo's to see if her disability could be cured with magic. But as one of the healers tried to heal her damaged nerves, something went wrong. Instead of healing her nerves, she damaged them further, and now Shiawase is paraplegic - a magical, incurable condition.

When Shiawase was 7, she was making grilled cheese, when two of her older brothers started fighting with each other. She cried, "Go somewhere else! I'm cooking!" but they didn't. So she tried again, "Be reasonable! You don't have to fight!" But as they carried on yelling at each other, she got angrier and angrier.

"STOP!"

And suddenly, the flames on the stove rose up and her grilled cheese burned to a crisp. They all looked at each other.

". . . Look what you did! Now you need to make me lunch!"

"No!" the brothers shouted and ran off in unison. Shiawase wheeled after them, shouting, "Get back here!!!"

There have been odd occurrences since then. There was that time a gust of wind mysteriously pushed over a boy who was bullying her. There have been numerous times her meals burned or didn't turn out right because the properties of the ingredients she was using would change when she got angry. It is now a rule in the family to leave Shiawase alone when cooking. But once in a while, her brother, closest in age to her, would forget and tease her and it would start another mess. The family always chalked these instances up to her making mistakes because she was angry, but Shiawase knew there was more to it than that. She'd always known.
